I love how throughout the entire movie the camera moves with the characters and follows them but at the very end when Jason drives off it doesn't go with him. Beautiful and touching
Very good point and subtle enough that it didn't get mention in analyses of the film: Jason riding off into the distance demonstrates that he leaves westward and literally goes beyond "the place beyond the pines", Schenectady (which means "the place beyond the pines" in Mohawk), the setting of the majority of the entire script to this point - the camera remaining stationary as he rides off shows that Jason furthermore leaves the camera behind, and therefore figuratively goes beyond "The Place Beyond the Pines" the film and its script for the character, and that he is free.
It didn't show when Josh Goshing character fell through the window dying after being shot and splattered body below which was so sad... because this scene shows JUST HOW so many men try to feed their FAMILIES ENDING UP!
I do. Fuckin love this movie. It means so much to me because I could feel all the difficult emotions in father-son relationships transmitted over generations. A lot of pain, love and trauma. And whenever I think about my dad and how much I love him I remember this movie.
(i know i’m late but) jason arguably was a troublemaker too. he was mixed up in drugs, did some pretty bad stuff in the film and wasn’t objectively a *good* person.
matthew woodall as sad as it it he was probably a significantly better person because he wasn’t around whereas Bradley Cooper’s son was probably much worse because his father was around
That’s the point I think it shows the good and bad in everyone despite there back ground cooper was a good man but was caught up in his own desires and let that get in the way of others lives
A complete shift in lives. One has everything given to him and is unhappy unlike the other whom has lived in poverty and left for.the road and is happy. Really tells a story of peoples lives
not really what its about. its about how what we do impacts the next generation. our mistakes have consequences that trancend even our temporary lives.
My theory is that the place beyond the pines is Drive 2, the driver runaway from L.A and then start to use a motorcycle and covers his whole body with tatoos
The tragedy of the film is that by the end Jason ends up in the same position as his father: no money, no future. Just a lone wanderer on a bike. It implies that the cycle of poverty, crime and death will continue.
I felt the same way until I saw someone else's take on it. While it's true it seems there's ambiguity about how Jason's future will end because he's in the same position Luke likely was (e.g: no father, no money as you said, a vagabond on a bike), there's a lot of visual clues to show that Jason probably won't follow completely in his father's footsteps. The first scene you see Luke ride, he's in a cage, at night, representing how small and stifled his life will be. This is in contrast to Jason, whose path is wide, open, beautiful and most importantly, full of vibrant light. I think the film means to imply that Jason's future isn't bound by Luke's tragic life, but he clearly carries the wildness that Luke embodied as well.
Not necessarily. Many that I grew up with in Schenectady did what Jason did. I travelled west to the Pacific and never moved back. This movie has a real feel of my home town in so many ways. The film stirred up a lot of old memories. The dense green of the woods particularly.
John Wils The movie starts with Luke riding into a cage, it ends with his son Jason riding off into the open road. That's a happy ending if you ask me, Luke's son was able to overcome what he never could and that's the ultimate goal for a father, for your son to be a better man than you were.
The boy picked a real good first bike. Dad would have been proud. Nothing like buying something from a man who knows how to maintain and care for things. The man who sold the boy the bike, was just like Luke in that regard. Before Luke had a family, he had his bike. It ran like a champ because he took care of it. Luke wanted to care for his family, too, after he knew he had one.
@@tinitusrhy5138 It's heavily implied that Jason is following the same path his father did. The symbolism of the bike shows a deep connection to his father. At some point Luke talks about how he didn't have his father and "look how he ended up". While it's possible Jason doesn't follow in that path, it's very likely given that he's leaving his entire social support, having not finished school and barely money to his name, just a bike and ideas about moving westward. I don't see the ending as inspiring, it seems really tragic.
I know I couldn't believe it when 'the wolves act 1 and 2 came' on, it's one of my favourite Bon Iver songs! It suited the end of this film so well and it made me love the film even more!!!
The sad thing about this movie is that it's so relatable to many of us. Luke and Romina were made for each other but were separated by life. If they were strong enough to fight and push for each other they could've lived a beautiful life with Jason as a complete family. We all get pushed and pulled in life....sadly we often aren't strong enough to overcome our demons.
Or fear we won't make it with the options we have. Life is hard. Some of us have to just keep trying; pushing forward while trying to give each other support. And no alcohol or drugs.
My dad was a bank robber ive never met him, and i was a reject my whole life till my father saved, cleaned, and found me, seeing that boy get out clan without blood on his hands and made it beyond the pines broke me, few movies to ever make me cry.
Jason wanted to do the one thing he heard his dad was good at. Everything else he knew about his dad was bad, but he asked the friend if his dad was good at anything. The guy tells him he was the best rider he had ever seen, and therefore, Jason wanted to do that... hence, the motorcycle.
The little sigh when she opens the picture, she’s transported back to that moment for a second. That little gasp, she remembers that moment and as much as she can’t help it, she can’t help but remember that happiness she felt with Luke in that moment. Beautiful.
Don’t usually comment on videos. However, this movie is genuinely one of the best of all time. Can’t believe it’s so underrated especially with all the talent in it. I hope that one day people will realise how great it really is and start ranking it among the greatest movies of all time.
That last shot really got me. As someone who grew up in Upstate New York, and always loved the way the mountains looked around there, this ending really captured the feelings of freedom and relief that I always associated being a teenager with when I was little. It's hard to describe how perfect that ending was for me.
Seen a lot of films , some which I teared up, or jumped or just laughed. I remember tearing up during this ending, clapping by myself and walking out full of tears. A beautiful movie. Thank you.
Yes, the part with the photo and the song is where i tested up and cried watching this movie. She likely didn't even remember what her sons father looked like.
God, I love too, how the boy just pops her in gear, floats to the turn, and lays into those gears once on the road. Almost like it's in his blood.... :) He should have gotten the title and that bill of sale, though :D

It was a great movie. This last scene was filmed right by where I live in upstate NY in the Adirondack mountains, the scenic motorbike ride at the end of the clip.
I love those movies, where the ending turns a "pretty good" movie to a " great and getting emotional" movie. This ending surely did this big time. Proof: i looked it up on RUclips. That scene with the picture and the music... Fantastic!
Hi! weird to reply to your comment by me asking, but I have to; so do you know what song is played in the background of the scene where The mother receives the old photograph? thank you
Wow, what an Ending he decides to leave because of his Mom & Stepfather lying about and Real Father and goes out on his own to make a Life for himself. I wonder how he'll be able to provide for himself ?
Just think about it for a sec, not only did jason discovered the truth about his dad and his dad’s past was being hidden from him. he also had to leave anyways after pistol whipping AJ and kidnapped and robbed Bradly cooper. I’m sure Jason felt miserable just knowing that Bradly cooper is the district attorney for the town and is the one that killed his father. Im guessing the more he stayed in that town it will just give him more Depression to use drugs and being in trouble. I’m sure he left for the greater good from being away from the law and causing anymore trouble for his family. I would have left to tbh lol.
Jason is like goodbye bullshit life and hello brighter and new future. I love how he escapes his awful house and now he can be his own person. You have to ask Romina if you could, "Was it really worth it? Lying to him and denying him of his real father? Now your own son wants nothing to do with you and never wants to see you ever again." A movie that encapsulates the legacy passed from father to son, and the variable age between them. But in this moment, it really shows what legacy means to this character, and how legacy can be chosen to take with, or that has always been there. Inheritance.

I think the song choice is meant to reflect that something is different. Jason is now free (or is he?). If the same music that we heard in the trailer and throughout the movie had played it would’ve suggested that nothing changed.
I love how throughout the entire movie the camera moves with the characters and follows them but at the very end when Jason drives off it doesn't go with him. Beautiful and touching

Lucas Kibler seriously, the first time that I saw this film I shared several tears. And the subsequent viewings have not yielded different results.
