Haha it is. Trust me. I have seen a lot ultra coloured illustrations that looked like they were created in the rainbow, and I always asked how did they do this. Now we all know how. So yeah it is a government top secret.
@@OVERTRY I don't think that's true, as there are many tutorials out there. I think the main issue is western artist just don't like experimenting much. You go into places like pixiv and you see eastern artists push the envelope daily, for them innovation is just as natural as breathing. Meanwhile you look at western artists and in general they all look the same. Well, most things in the west generally look the same, we have developed a culture of rejecting innovation and prefering to streamline and standarize everything, including art.

sorry that this is unrelated, but the other day i got into your honorable mentions for the contest and despite not making it, that alone was really big for me. youve practically taught me most of my drawing skills (from age 15 i think, im 24 now.) and inspired a lot of the work ive been doing since like 8 years ago or even 9. im not using my discord name here i just wanted to say that that was a big deal for me. such a long time and i still click every new video, theres always something new to try and learn.
this is pretty groundbreaking i dont think there are a lot of artist who know about this. I think we will see an a abundance of this tech in art in the near future
I first learned about gradient maps (in CSP though) with ChrissaBug, but even her video is relatively new, I haven't seen a lot of about this technique. Sounds like it is something that might be taking off.
It's honestly incredible, how do you even come up with this? Were you just goofing around with different ps tools or was making a quick way for holo texturing your goal from the start?
As a little tip, you can add gradient maps as an adjustment layer under "fx" at the bottom of the layers tab and just clip it to your base shape! That way you can edit the valued of your base layer whenever you like, keep editing the gradient map and also easily mask out parts of the gradient map. *Edit: It's not "fx", its the little black and white circle!*
@@llavella86 you can change the blending mode of the adjustment layers just like the base layers. The way I do it is to just keep the base layer as ist is. Then I first add a hue/saturation layer to desaturate it. Then add the rainbow gradient map layer on top, put that on lumiosity blending mode. Then add a levels adjustment layer in between the two (on top of the hue but under the gradient map) and adjust the levels until I get that metal look. Then proceed to slap more gradient maps on top that make it golden or holographic or whatever.
Wow! Amazing tutorial, as always! Everything you've shown should also be possible in Krita (which is free). Gradient maps, levels and colour adjustments could be set as filters masks, meaning that you could adjust the levels, lightness and hue after applying the gradient map (in a non-destructive way). I'm pretty sure that's also possible in Photoshop, I just don't know how.
@@dreamingsophie5792 I've never touched the gradient map either. And that's a big mistake, since I love experimental stuff and that seems like the perfect tool for achieving crazy effects! By the way, I briefly tested it and everything seems to work! The gradient map is fully fledged and functional. Obviously, you don't need to use it as a filter mask, you can simply apply the filter directly to the layer as Sinix did. Filter masks are non-destructive and more flexible though (and can be merged with the layer at the end if needed).
i was about to incorporate holographic clothing into my character to this year's chroma corps, but i can't coz i don't know how lol, glad to know how to do it for upgrading my character next year !!
What the…. This is actual magic! Every time I dabble with gradient maps, it looks terrible and I immediately abort… but I might just have to try this out 🤣

I had slowed down your previous speadpaint to get a sense of how you rendered the holographic materials and I have to say this tutorial is a godsend! Thank you!
This is so well timed for me, I've been painting concepts of a character for my own personal universe and she has a suit with some holographic properties. I'd been rendering it in before, now imma def use this tutorial. Super helpful, thanks dawg
What a great tutorial! I would have never guessed that you could actually archieve such convincing effects using gradient maps and layer styles. Thank you so much for sharing!

thanks so much for this i realized so many things about rendering beyond just making things holo! I'm defiantly gong to be putting my art though photo shop to get more polished looks!
i've been wathcing trent kaniuga paint entire illustrations with this since years, i'm sooo excited to see what you come up with, having a whole different background in painting
for clip studio users - you can achieve a similar effect by going to edit>tonal correction>tone curve and messing with the handles on the curve. By clicking on the curve, making a new handle, and dragging it to an extreme position, you can make the values take a huge leap between dark and light. Doing that over and over until the graph looks like a sine wave, and you get something that looks kinda like metal (albeit with the colors wack)
Why does this information feel like it's a confidential government top secret?

LUCKY
I just made a drawing with iridescence and I'm gonna try to use this
I’m literally designing a character rn with metallic and holographic clothes lmao
Omg can I see your arts 🥺🥺
great, love to see how artists come with ways to render different materials.
I didn’t know I needed this until now
haha saaaaame. I have a character that would so rock this lol
I low-key thought that it was an actual tutorial on how to make holographic clothes using fabric.
The thumbnail was so real
Same
In case anyone needs to know: This same Feature is in Clip Studio Paint so you won't need Photoshop for this!

if you mess around while making a cc you'll find out about this trick on your own sooner or later
Arts is about experimenting with different techniques. I think he test around with the holo technique a lot, since holo kind of clothes is kinda hard
There's some tutorials about how to make things gold with Photoshop, he probably tried one of those and experimented with it.
Man those folds are amazing, an updated fold video would be really cool
eyeing them folds are we... haha me too tho, so natural. It adds such a realistic balance into the illustrative art style!
That's the most useful tutorial for the least useful thing I've ever seen.
LMAO
the ability to add a metallic texture to simple forms is actually a pretty big deal imo

Yes indeed
