- Filmed in 1993, take a trip to the Dover Western Docks terminus station. The station, originally named Dover Marine was opened for public use on the 18th January 1918 by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway. It was closed to passengers on the 25th September 1994, a casualty of the Channel Tunnel. The listed building remains in use as a cruise terminal. Full 6 minute version of this clip included on forthcoming Panarail DVD "British Rail Southern Region in the 1990's Volume 2"

This is wonderful. My mum used to bring me here when I was a train-obsessed kid of about 5 years old. I'm not sure but I think that the section of road that comes into view around 1:16 is where you could cross on to the beach. I used to get so excited about coming so close to the bare metal of the rails. You have no idea how much I wish I could roll into this old station again. The smell was so distinctly BR standard issue disinfectant mixed with salty air and a bit of creosote.
Excellent footage 👍👍👍👍👍
Oh the Western Docks station, it was so deliciously grubby and decayed. All that rusting iron work and litter strewn tracks. The old rolling stock had toilets that flushed directly on to the railway which was a disgusting practice. Incredible to think that still went on until they were finally taken out of service in 2005. That was why there was so much soggy white paper visible in this film.
As a ferry mad youngster I used to jump on the free Hoverspeed courtesy buses between the Hoverport and Western Docks station just to get a chance to see the French and Belgian ships up close along the Admiralty Pier. The drivers didn't mind at all. On one occasion I even got a free ride on the train back to Priory station thanks to a kindhearted guard.
I loved the Network SouthEast branding, very smart. Those were the days.
I was a Signalman at Dover Marine for 24 years and closed out the Box on the last day. Pity they never kept the old Girl, it would have made a nice cafe, but like a decent British rail system, it's history.
I know this was a comment for an age ago, Nigel. But i'm assuming you handled the Night Ferry during your time at Dover Marine?
@@thestrawman1429 Yes indeed, it was a busy number in those days.
I also remember that we arrived there quite a few times at Dover western Docks from Ostend by boat for holidays 😀and also for many Christmases in London with family. I loved that Dover Western station 😉very much, my mother 😍was from London and we lived in Ostend, we had quite a lot of family there in London. I have tears in my eyes that this is now all a thing of the past.😢Greetings from Ostend to the English 👍
Hi got a similar story used to holiday in Ostend,my parents were Belgian and were evacuated to London in war.she stayed with other sister, but rest went back.so we used to visit regularly, the train and boat was so exciting 😊
I am only sad I didn't shoot more of this interesting location. Apart from the return journey once again filmed from the train and my footage of the goods yard, that is sadly all I have. I'm only too happy to share these clips with the You Tube community.
I remember travelling from Victoria to Western Docks by train in the late 80's - my train even had an MLV on the rear. Those were the days!!
This brings the pictures I've seen of this terminal to life. Sadly I'm too young to have ever seen this, but my father did ride from here to London after getting off a ferry in the early '80s. Fantastic stuff, thanks for sharing.
A fascinatingly interesting video, interesting to see the speed at which the train approached the buffer stop as I'm sure that wouldn't be allowed these days at such a speed. 5* for this excellent piece of history! Such good quality you could sell it to a railway museum!
Also, I love have the old slam-doors would open while the train was still in motion. Wonderful video.
Awesome video. I used to love the rattle and roll and noise of the old slam door trains. And the split-flap board at Victoria. Great times!!!
The Victoria boat train to Dover Western Docks probably wasn't perfect. Because of lack of investment it was a bit shabby. But it was a 1000x better than the messed up broken system that exists now. Excluding Eurotunnel and Eurostar, it is utterly ramshackle and cobbled together.
So trains from London used to run to Dover Western Docks. Wish I visited this station now closed of course. Good clip.
I remember the 1980s and mountain hiking jaunts to Austria. Catch the boat train from London Victoria and on the Dover approach there were tunnel sections and the break in the sea side wall and that first glimpse of the Channel. When you got off the train you crossed the platform and go along that glass and wood wall past I think it was customs desk which was almost always unmanned. Then emerging on the dockside you'd see the ferry with the foot passenger access ramp for the first time. Just a memory now.
Well did any of you see the old Marine station when it was the venue for the BBC's Question Time? Now apparently a liner terminal. What a transformation and perhaps a fitting end for that wonderful old terminus. It looked absolutely splendid!
Thanks, was born and grew up in Dover. My grandmothers house was just up Folkestone road from priory station and I spent a lot of time watching the STEAM trains leaving Priory station for the Marine station (as it was called then) also watching them load onto the cross channel ferries at the western docks. Got a lot of steam and soot in my face tho ..!
I used to work as a Signalman from 1989 to 1999 in that area (Martin Mill, Deal and Sandwich) and spent a lot of time around this area, again , should have taken more pictures at the time (didn't have a camcorder back then)
Loved those EMUs. Many, many happy journeys from London down into Kent in the 70s and 80's.
It even had it's own red phone box on the platform. I remember trains running to there, when I was at Thanet Technical College, in Ramsgate, back in the mid 80s. The college is now history too, having been pulled down and replaced with a leisure centre.
I was did the last Saturday shift in the ticket office :) Sad times when this station closed, was probable my favourite station to work at
+dazzqpr Was that the last day of advertised services or the day the last unadvertised ones ran?
they ran unadvertised services on the Sunday I believe
Top marks for filming UK's "Scruffiest Destination"!
I thoroughly enjoyed that one John, although I've never been to the terminus, it brings back memories of other such locations, so thanks for sharing..5*...Bob
Well a great vidio. I was a "Booking lad" in Hewksbury street box so memories came flooding back. Well done
Went to school in Gillingham - lived in Dover. Made this journey hundreds of times - but the flange squeal coming into the Marine still gives me goose pimples and makes me nostalgic for the old days! So sad to know the old terminus is gutted and now a car park. Can't bring myself to visit the old place on my trips back to Kent - I want to remember it as it was in it's slightly shabby splendour.
My dad used to work for British Sealink running from Dover or Folkstone if Dover was closed.
My Dad worked there back in the day.
Thanks, I just wish I photographed more of this area.
Such a shame BR allowed this lovely station to become so run down and dirty.I believe the hotel next door went the same way?
the memories that flooded by advanced transportation 😔. but unforgettable 💞
I meant "Hawkesbury Street Junction"!
One day I may put something online about my Southern region days.
Stuart
Thanks Bob. The station had an awesome atmosphere, although I recorded from the train in and out, I didn't shoot anything from the platform level. A huge mistake on my part.
Construction of the Channel Tunnel began in 1988, so I presume you must've known at the time you took these videos that Dover Western Docks was likely to close eventually? After all, the Chunnel effectively eliminated the need for boat trains!
oh dear. all gone
Well I have deep roots inthe Dover Triangle. so once more "Very well Done"
i remember that gd old days when had window wide open 6 in the morning to go fishing in dover those were the days and can u tell me the 1 where your coming back on the train
me and my brother used to go fishing down there a lot ;( ah memories
foxcell Fishing still goes on next to the station
