Which direction do you wrap your bar tape?
I wrap the right side counterclockwise and the left side clockwise; both starting from the bottom.
Inside to outside, starting at the bottom. I'm still a fan of the figure 8 at the hoods though.
Both ways on each side, winding out from the drops, switching to inward on top. It doesn't seem to matter either way as grip varies--useless old habit.
I wrap the right bar clockwise since there are no brakes on my fixie. I'm a pusher on the bar tops so this tightens the top. I like the idea of welding the finish tape. Applying cross sections of 19mm inner tubes works also, but with short lifespan.
Plasti-Dip. Aero.
Calvin is a legend. All I know about bicycle maintenance I know from his videos.
We'll pretend our feelings aren't hurt 😥
@@gcntech no reason to have hurt feelings. Calvin's videos go into more detail in many cases than GCN Tech. Both are excellent resources. I often watch GCN Tech video then look for other information. More often than not the next source in a Calvin Jones Park Tool video. Reverse is also true ... prime example is gear indexing. 🚴♂️
The legend Calvin Jones
Calvin Jones is the Bob Ross of bike mechanics 🖼
Mitch……quote of the century even if most non-Americans don’t know who Bob Ross was
@@JMcLeodKC711 what would be his version of happy little trees? 🌲
@@JMcLeodKC711 I’m in Scotland I know who Bob Ross is. My kids even know who he is and watch his old shows. Thanks
calvin loves happy trees too! 😂
We discovered bob Ross during our first lock down. We would come back from calls at our fire station and watch him on tv. We would be in complete silence as we tried to figure out what he was painting!
There was some blue on the side…😱😱😱
Don't know why they don't film this the right way so you can actually see what's happening.
Even more unbelievable considering the budget and prestige of the channel.
First thing I thought.
Because they don't want you to see.
I’ve always wrapped my bars the Calvin way since his vid came out. I like how he’s used the pin tool to hold the tape.
Me too! A legend
Hack!
I use a Velcro strap instead.
I learn something new every time I watch Calvin. He’s the man.
Love how Calvin psychologically steers the rider in the right direction. „give them something to do, look you can save weight“. A real pro.
Filming is bad. I can't see anything. But mechanic is great, he knows what he is doing.
The sliver of blue underneath the hood covers is bothering me.
redo
Sharpie to the rescue 🖊
Yes and me you could see it clearly!
Can't be unseen. 😢
Calvin the Legend with our favorite man Ollie?? I am clicking right away
Calvin probable has taught millions how to wrap bar tape. They should have the "special edition" bar tape named after him.
Great respect for Calvin ......buuuuut.... I always do the top of the bars with the tape coming round the top and back. Most riders grab the bars with a pulling back grip and their weight pulls down too so the tape is kept taught rather than being very slowly relaxed and unwound.
He said that but because he had to hide the strip he had to do it the reverse of what he normally does.
On my recent resto of an old raleigh road bike I watched Calvin's Park Tool video on fitting bar tape, brilliant and simple to follow idiots guide, mans a genius.
The best bar tape video I have seen , love the tacking
The collab that we need! I have downloaded Calvin Jones' Park Tool videos on my phone when I started cycling in the event of a bike disaster or maintenance.
Had the chance to meet Calvin last year at Sea Otter - great guy!
Calvin is the man. The bicycle maintenance guru. Been following him and Park Tools for years.
Needed better video work as not enough close ups to really follow
I'm in love with this channel. Love from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰
More Calvin videos please! Total legend!
Wish you had zoomed in
Thank you so much, CJ!
What a great guy this Calvin :)
Good thing I already know how to do this because if I didn't that video wouldn't have taught me squat lol. Pretty vague and horrible camera angle
Great duo 👍
My bar tape was getting rather gnarly.
Always a treat to see The Man Jones back here.
Ahhhh you just have to love Calvin
6:47 Oh look, here comes the Video Bomb! Lady gets quality time on GCN, you'd swear she's waiting for HER bike.
Love Calvin. Sign him up
Best crossover ever ♥️
I climb a lot and save all the tape for the tops for a nice padded feel, a thin wrap for the drops is sufficient.
I didn't know calvins a pro mechanic of pro races, cool collab guys, i haven't seen parktool and gcn together in a video
❤️🚲🚲 Parktool is brand collab for a while. See other videos and parktool always in the background. 🚲🚲🙌🏼🤙🏼✌🏼❤️
1:53 "An electrolyte and an amoeba walk into a bar".
Absolute GENIUS!!!!
Unfortunately Dr. Bridgewood was dropped....again:(
That line was good. XD
I live 3 blocks away from the Park tool plant here in Minnesota and every time I ride by I dream about all the wonderful tools inside that building!!!!!
I use two videos. One from Park Tools by Calvin and another one by Silca by Josh. They are both really great people
Never seen that tac welding trick before, i’ll try that.
That one guy who is actually a priceless Park Tool
Ollie, when you’re in the drops with your head down, you might see the blue showing at the backside of the drops. A sharpie should take care of that.
Calvin for President! 👌
Legend!
Wish I could find some tape that long and not have to make small overlaps. Always end up short by the time I get to the top. Calvin had loads left over.
0:41 Ah the fisherman in all of us!
I need to tape my Gravel bike bars so now I can try this method. Never done it before so we will see how it goes.
Great video idea but let down by poor photography. No close up shots. The welding of the tape idea is fantastic but it was only described not realty shown. Olly, instead of looking like a spare part as this exceptionally talent Park Tools chap explained his methods you needed to direct the camera man correctly. More videos please like this but with better more detailed photography.
If you do a search on Park Tool bar tape wrap there are a few with Calvin. IIRC one has an excellent view of the finish, including heating a spare spoke to make the weld.
Aw, Mate! To have your own handlebar tape wrapped by the legend himself! That's awesome. Don't go sweating all over it too quickly and ruining that superb work.
Great .... The bit we all struggle with, around the levers ..... you speed the film up so we can't see what's happening !! 😂
Nice
2:35 - stopped the video here and went checking mine!
PS
And they were! I was sure they were but now I am, well, double sure! :)
The Man The Myth The Legend
Park Tool GOAT! Calvin Jones
i am huge fan of Calvin Jones, hope he will live very long and healthy life.
Why did the video speed up when it came to the tricky bit around the levers? Ugh!
The man. The Myth. The legend.
That's the first time I've ever heard Ollie been accused of been a "pro cyclist". Ollie did look a little surprised when Calvin called him a "pro cyclist".
i want a 90 min video of dr ollie bridgewood detailing the corroding mechanisms :D
I want this guy as my personal mechanic!
Don't we all
I wish Calvin was my Dad. Nice one Ollie.
Could please make a video for a triathlon bike with flat aerobars! That would be really helpful
Yasss park tools dude
That tack weld I never knew that before
2:13 Ah, I knew it, bike technology IS rocket science, BUT, 2:39 cyclists are NOT Aliens!
calvin is freakin' cool man
calvin is better than GCN's whole team
What have I learned from this video? I've learned that I still want to have my mechanic do it for me.
Calvin: This is my pro rider
Ollie: Who me?!
This guys rad
To be fair, anyone stood next to Ollie seems pretty rad by comparison
@@gcntech 🤣🙃🤣
#askGCNtech I've recently adjusted the friction on the clutch of my Shimano RX400 rear derailleur, but one of the three screws holding the clutch cover doesn't torque (it engages with the threads, but spins endlessly). The other two are good and the cover is secured in place. Until my next maintenance at the bike shop, what is my best course of action with this screw: Leave it as-is, add a drop of threadlocker, replace with a zip tie, or none of the above?
Sounds like you might have stripped one of the threads.
This is like an avengers team up
Try some self-fusing silicone tape and you'll never want to use the glorpy adhesive "finishing tape" again.
#AskGCNTech I see riders at the tour the France sometimes warm up or cool down with wheel on trainers. Does this not burn and damage the tyre and decrease grip ? I would like to know if amateurs could do the same without ruining their tyres ?
Are they trainers or rollers?
Im doing it that way since the 90's. Its the only way to get value as the tape stays put.
What a shame he didn't do a figure of eight around the clamping area; he's left a little bit of blue tape visible!
Close up shots would help if you are showing how to do something
My bar tape schedule is to change up whenever GCN spin out another "How to do your bar tape" video
I see Calvin, I click.
Thanks for watching, maybe we'll try to repeat the formula 🤔
I've met Josh Poertner, the next biking celebrity I want to meet is Calvin!
Funny how olly acts as if he has never paid attention to detail.
The problem I have is on the top which way do you cut your angle.... to the stem or away from the stem? That's the it they never show on any of the videos🤔🤔
I wrap bar tape in front of the bike, so once I've made my cutting mark, I cut the tape in the same longitudinal plane as the bike's.
I am a cyclist of simple needs; I see Calvin and I click "like".
But you could see the blue line near the shifters
"The level of detail ... oh I'm so super exited ... " and the blue lines of the tape are still visible.
Woah! They let Calvin out into the world??? Aren’t park terrified that someone will poach him? 🤣
I saw a dab of blue there under the hood part... Blue dab u dee dab u da... 😎
Ollie looked like he was going to crack up…
OMG! I'm stealing the tack welding thing. I've never seen that. I started wrapping it "backwards" after the finish tape came loose in the rain once and the bar tape started coming unwrapped. I tied it in a knot to get through and started wrapping it backwards since. The problem with that is that my hands push on the edge of the tape when on the hoods.
Try some self-fusing silicone tape instead -- it will never unravel and no goopy mess. Or if you really want to get old-school, a proper whipping with hemp twine can be very effective -- treat with shellac for weather resistance.
Cover the Blue? The French just called. You know the rest!
Have you guys ever heard of doing close ups of how to do this? I can't learn from sitting 50 ft away!!!!!!
The camera was closer so that I could see you more detail.
wonder how team Ineos mechanics end the wrap without finishing tape?
Super glue I think, I'm pretty sure I saw it in a sky mechanic truck video of some sort
@@dan_lazaro They do use super glue, one did it when he was building Tao Geoghegan Hart's bike in one of Gee Milner's videos.
@@dan_lazaro i just got to know TdF Trek bikes have no finishing tape too coz their mechanics wrap bar tape from the top. will give it a try next time i change bar tape😆
The camera man needed to be a meter closer. Can't see what he's doing half the time.
Calvin reminds of Bill Nye except bikes instead of science
are you going to unwrap now since some BLUE is showing
Is the expired Marmotte strapped to the bike stand optional? 😂
I can see blue line
Masterclass.
Let's have a poll.......when Ollie was not paying attention, where were his eyes wondering to:-
A. Pretty lady
B. Hot bike
🤪
Time out. We are all here to see in what direction the tops are finished. Time in.
I can see some blue still! Fail!
