    Apple recently refreshed the 12" Retina MacBook and 13" MacBook Pro for 2017 with faster Intel chips and other internal improvements. Base price for both new models comes in at $1299, but which one should you choose?

    I recently picked up the 2015 MacBook 512gb for £750. It is an absolutely astonishing machine. I use mine for general computer tasks, mail, safari, photos, iTunes, managing photos and videos from my GoPro. I also do some light video editing in iMovie for fun. Editing gaming videos etc. And it doesn't struggle at all. I used to have the MacBook Pro 2015, and although its a much more powerful machine, I love the MacBook. it's small thin light and more than powerful enough for my use.
    So the real question is, do you need a powerful machine for intense graphical and video editing? get the MacBook Pro. or do you want a small light Mac for day to day computing with more storage? get the MacBook.
    Both are excellent machines, it is personal preference and what your needs are. The MacBook is by no means a slow computer, mine is 2 years old as is still lightning fast.
    I tend to use mine a lot on the sofa or in bed, so the smaller size is perfect for me. Best bet is to get to an apple store and see for yourself, there is no clear answer, its different from person to person.

      cloudgirl150 I’m glad I could help. You really won’t regret it. I did opt for the 512gb which had the faster processor. But I know the 2016 and 2017 models are even faster, especially if you go for the 512gb model. The 2017 even comes with an i5 now with the 512gb version. Can pick these up for about £1100 brand new on Amazon now too saving you a few hundred compared to the Apple store. :D

    Locking the screen brightness to 100% would also mean the Pro was producing more Nits for that test. Ideally they'd be matched on nits, not percent. You don't need fancy equipment to do that, you can do it with an SLR or something.

    MacBook: People constantly, and I mean constantly, on the go and don't need too much power for what they're doing, which is email/word processing/music and video streaming/web browsing.
    MacBook Pro: People who don't mind some more weight and want more power for what they do, which can include video editing/music...stuff/idk virtualization/compiling power?/etc.

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 5 лет назад

      The thing is. Who is running virtual machines on a macbook while on the go? Wouldn't it be cheaper and more reliable to get a old i7 desktop computer for a few hundred bucks to spin up test VMs remotely at home? Even coding doesn't require that much horsepower these days. The only thing I can think of is mobile video editing but in that case you would go for the 15" mbp by default. The 13" mbp and mba is bulky, has worse battery life, and has the risk of the fan clogging up with dust down the road.
      I personally think the macbook is the perfect laptop for someone like me that doesn't need a mobile desktop replacement and doesn't want to be tapping on a iPad. Even though the keys are flat and hardly press in, it's a whole lot better than the Apple keyboard cover. Lastly, macOS is much more versatile and intended for productivity, where iOS is not. I'm waiting for the macbook 2019 refresh with Intel Amber Lake. It should be a noticeable bump in battery life and performance under TDP. I expect to keep that mb 12" for a solid 7 years.

    It is not just portability - the MacBook has a much more sophisticated ergonomic wedge-shaped design, whereas the Pro is comparatively backwards with the old-fashioned rectangular shape that is comparatively uncomfortable to rest ones hands on. The interesting review that I look forwards to is comparing the speed of the base 1.2 GHz model to the 1.3 and 1.4 GHz options, and see how those numbers vary. Also, instead of quoting benchmarks, why not conduct some real world timing tests (in seconds).

If I wanted a laptop that can just surf the web, I'd go for something like 300dollar windows laptop. MBP can handle light gaming but the MacBook can't. MBP runs CS:GO at low settings at 100+ fps so its not bad at all.

    Good video. I just feel like most of the consumers seriously battling between both of these base model computers are also taking into consideration the storage space of the SSD. The video mentioned it briefly, but more so highlighted the negative aspects of the MacBook vs it's Pro variant. For a basic user that wants the extra storage on the base MacBook Pro, they will have to spend a couple hundred more.

      Michael Silverman Anybody who buys this is getting ripped off 200 for 256 400 for 512 and a whopping 800 dollars for for one terabyte that's fucking ridiculous. That's what I hate about apple they take advantage of the consumers they know that's not going to be enough space to do anything on then charge A fortune to upgrade the storage.

Btw the sound in the 13 may sound fuller and louder, the midranges generate a tiring distortion that make the 12" easier to listen to.

The storage cannot be replaced so you want to be getting at bare minimum 256gb. Also think about when you'll want to sell the device: 128gb in 2022 for example will be out of question.

    I really don’t understand why they made the MacBook and the MacBook Pro baseline models the same price. Yes, I know that the MacBook is more portable, but is one inch really that big of a difference? The 13 inch MacBook Pro can still fit in a backpack, and the extra pound will really not be noticeable, so it is still portable. It would have made more sense if the MacBook had a slightly lower price. I mean, the MacBook Pro is better in every way- power, display, screen size.

When im at work i always used to have a 10 tab of chrome, 2instance of ANdroid studio, and 1-2 emulator, is it enough for my need?

    Whaaaa I want a showdown of the air vs MacBook with the breakdown you did here.You ruled out the Air but was the $999 version. But you can upgrade it to a 2.2 Ghz - 3.2 Turbo boost + i7 processor for $150. Still making it $150 less then the MacBook (or $50 more if upgraded to equal SSD memory) I feel that would be a good showdown

      macOS in itself only takes up max 12GB in my experience though, and honestly with a laptop I only need enough internal storage for all my programs and I store everything else on a regularly backed up external drive...

    Such a bad review. Only cause all u reviewers are editing videos... 99% of the guys dont use a laptop for that, i also only cut 2-3 videos a year and a macbook 12 is more than enough powerful for me. Even with a 4 times better gpu they still are both garbage anyway compared to a discret gpu. Sure two USB-C ports might be better for you as a "videocreator", but tell me why should i use these port? I only use it 1 or 2 times a year to copy anything from an usb-stick to my mac, but i really dont know what i should plug in more....

  • @niter43
    @niter43 7 лет назад

    uhmm. Sorry, but you should set brightness by nits level, not percents. Especially when you clearly said before, that macbook pro have way brighter (500 vs 350 nits) display.
    In other words: get yourself a luminance meter, that's a must-have for reviewer.

    • @vadimyuryev
      @vadimyuryev 7 лет назад

      niter43 you're missing the point, friend. An average user isn't going to care about nits. If they want the brightness maxed out, they're gonna mash that button, no matter how much nits their screen gives off

    • @niter43
      @niter43 7 лет назад

      +Vadim Yuryev
      Uhm, that's average user problems. It was a test of battery, and devices should have same conditions. People that come for product review is smart enough to set brightness to levels they actually need, not the maximum available to burn eyes and drain battery.
      If you still don't agree - bring them to park on sunny day. Macbook 12 gets technical loss with 0 hours of battery due to screen not bright enough for usage, when Pro version is ok. But that's quite stupid because we tried to test battery and not screen, huh?

    Macbook pro 13" 2016 with touchbar and 512gb or Macbook Pro 13" 2017 without touchbar and 256gb? Both the same price. One have the advantage of storage and touchbar and the other has Kaby Lake. Which one?

    • @vadimyuryev
      @vadimyuryev 7 лет назад

      Alexandru Turcoman I personally would go with the newest one available, based on resale value. There is a higher demand for a one year old device than two or more. Unless you will have a lot of videos or something that takes a lot of space, you should be fine. Otherwise you can get an external drive if you wanted.

    • @alexandruturcoman9511
      @alexandruturcoman9511 7 лет назад

    • @vadimyuryev
      @vadimyuryev 7 лет назад

      Alexandru Turcoman if I was you I would look at your current computers storage usage and after how many years. If you're using more than 256 and don't want to compromise then go with the 512

      -if ports are really important for you (sd card slot usb a etc) the 2015 is a better buy and maybe a bit cheaper
      -if the better screen, better speakers and more portability are more important to you, you should buy the 13 inch mbp base 2016/2017 (maybe you get the 2016 model cheaper)

      John Grimes the Pro is really light still and very portable, not much difference in portability imo.
      the pro is 500g heavier, that's nothing. I really don't see any.reason to get a macbook

    • @johngrimes93
      @johngrimes93 7 лет назад

      Matthew Martini yeah my only reasoning behind getting the MacBook is the higher storage capacity on the base model

    • @mattmartini836
      @mattmartini836 7 лет назад +2

      John Grimes yeah that's fair enough if you really can't stretch beyond the $1299, but if you could stretch your budget to get the 256gb Pro, it'd be way worth it the pro will last you a lot longer. I am in an similar dilemma and even though I love the size of the macbook , the pro is just better in every single way. I went to the electronics store yesterday and picked up both because I really thought I wouldn't be happy with the weight of the pro, and I picked up the pro and it was a breeze to carry. also it might be better if you decide to do more intensive tasks in the future. Haha I've really thought this over alot!

    • @johngrimes93
      @johngrimes93 7 лет назад

      Matthew Martini yeah it's just I'm in Ireland so they're more expensive so they're both at the same price of €1534, or something like that and then the 256GB Pro is €1800 almost I think and I dunno if I can justify spending that, I'm a student and don't even have a car yet 😂😂

    • @mattmartini836
      @mattmartini836 7 лет назад

      John Grimes 😂😂 you could get an Air for half the price and save the rest for a car?
      or you could get last year's Pro the 2016 for alot cheaper on Apple refurbished site and still save some money.
