Giddens' work makes me cry on so many levels. Intensely beautiful and genuine, and goddamn does her music HURT. One of the greatest artists alive today.

She is amazing - also a trained opera singer. She recently debuted her opera telling the story of Omar ibn Said (Giddens composed most of the music for Omar on the banjo and integrated her deep knowledge of folk music into the opera.) It is slated to tour the country.
