How To Bead A Necklace
by Jennifer and Kitty O'Neil
Running With Sisters
Do you ever see the strands of beautiful beads at the craft store and wish you knew what to do with them? Maybe you have even bought some, but you don’t know how to turn them into jewelry. Well, we are here to take the mystery out of jewelry making.
We are going to show you how to turn those gorgeous gemstone and crystal beads into a necklace. And you can use the same technique to make a bracelet, too! We'll show you how to combine two to three strands of beads to make your design.
We'll show you what to put the beads on - bead stringing wire! It is a very soft, coated wire that doesn’t kink like regular wire. Here’s a video we made explaining bead stringing wire:
Bead Stringing Wire For Jewelry Explained ► • How To Make Jewelry: B...
We'll show you how to string the beads onto the bead stringing wire, including a little tip using masking tape to keep the beads from sliding off. Then we will show you how to add a clamshell bead tip and a crimp to secure a toggle clasp.
The tools you will need for this project are the basic trip of jewelry making: chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, and wire cutters. Here’s a video we made showing these tools:

We hope you like this video and it helps you get started making your own jewelry. If you have any questions at all, just leave us a comment and we’ll reply. We are here to help!

Thank You!!! I had a very old unakite necklace that broke while I was outside. I can actually find similar stones at a reasonable price (This thing went with soooo many outfits...!) but from repairing jewelry before I was afraid I couldn't make a tight or secure enough strand. Now I'm very excited to replace a much missed accessory without shopping for YEARS to find one already made.
Yay! So glad we could help!
Jennifer & Kitty
Thank you so much for making this video. I've been making necklaces for about six months now without watching any videos on how to crimp the end and turns out I've been doing it the hard way with regular crimps. I'm doing it this way for now on. Loved this video.
You are so welcome! Thanks for loving our video!

I want to do this same element but double length. That way it can be double layered with the clasp as the focal point. Thank you for the DIY! Now I know what I can make to wear at the family reunion!

Thanks for making this video!! I can't wait to make the necklace I planned.
Yay! Thanks for watching our video!
I always wondered how you supposed to make necklaces with those. Thank you for this informative video
Thank you for watching! J&K
I realize I'm a bit late to the party but I am so happy I came across your videos! Perfect and concise video on how to start and finish a bead necklace. I most definitely subscribed! The only thing I'm wondering is if I am able to use this technique using silk thread?
Hi Leigh! The crimps for the clasps could cut into the delicate silk thread. So for thread we recommend tying it onto the clasp or making an endless necklace like this one: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-an-endless-beaded-necklace-no-clasp/
Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
Easy and BEAUTIFUL! 👏👏👏
Thanks so much!

Excellent video, best how to yet!
Wow! Thanks!!
J&K
Thanks for your video. It is so very clear and easy to follow. My question is....crimp beads come in different sizes I am told. What size of crimp beads do you use?
Hi Kathy, We probably should pay more attention to crimp bead sizes, but we usually use whatever we have around. It is important if you are trying to hide a crimped crimp bead under a crimp bead cover, but otherwise it doesn't matter too much. You can buy a set of crimp beads in four sizes and then have a variety on hand as you need them. They look like this: amzn.to/39Ge2Vd
Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
You are so lucky in the US, beads and other supplies are so much cheaper than in europe. I envy you!
Aw Karen. We do feel lucky to have access to great beads at great prices. Can you find stores online that will ship to where you are?
J&K
Hi, I've been using this technique for my jewelry so far and I've been having some difficulty with beads becoming loose or falling apart all together. Thank you for your help. I love creating!
Are you still having trouble with the beads coming loose or falling apart? Let us know how we can help!
J&K
The O'Neil Sisters Yes!! Please help me! I make all of my jewelry with this technique and some have lasted longer than other pieces without getting loose at the ends.
Hi, I'm still waiting for a reply! I really need to figure out how to stop the beads from getting loose because I'm selling jewelry now based on this video! bakedbutterfly.com
Sorry we missed your comments. Sometimes RUclips is confusing in how it shows which comments we have not responded to. So sorry!
If the beads are getting loose, it sounds like the bead stringing wire is coming out of the crimp. Try adding a dab of glue inside the clamshell bead tip before you close it. We like GS-GHypo. Here's what it looks like: amzn.to/3e9kamh Or you could use E6000 and apply it with a toothpick.
Here is the step by step how-to for this necklace on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
We have a few more videos showing how to finish the ends. This one is made the same way.
runningwithsisters.com/easy-bead-stringing-handmade-glass-bead-necklace/
Or you could try finishing the ends a different way. Here we use crimp beads and crimp covers instead of the clamshell bead tip.

Beautiful necklace I have a question what type of wire would you use if you are using crystals? To make a necklace thank you
Great question Patricia! We would use the same wire, bead stringing wire. Here's a link to the how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Hope that helps!

Awesome Job! I have been wanting to start making jewelry, as it is a passion & want to have unique pieces; Thank you so much for the expert video! So helpful!!! :)
So glad we could help! J&K
Great video ladies! If I may...just one more little suggestion...)at least for the beginners anyway,) after your last crimp and before closing the crimp cover, be sure to give your necklace a good "tug". This is to ensure that your crimp is ok and that it will hold your beautiful necklace together....
+Teri Steinborn Great tip Teri! We should all make a habit of checking our crimps to make sure they're secure. Thanks so much for the excellent reminder!
yes indeed I have made this mistake a few times.
I always do 2 crimps to be sure, especially for a heavy necklace like this

For me AC MOORE store is the best one, Michaels not bad, but AC MOORE, is like walking into heaven, as far as variety of beads
and the sheer amount of materials to make necklaces and bracelets go, tons of stuff!
Ooh sounds wonderful! We don't have one near us, but we follow them and they follow us on Twitter! They are so nice! J&K
As usual a great video😍😍😍😍
Aw thanks Swati!!
How does it hold up vs double strand regular crimping?

Thank you for the tutorial. Can it be a problem if I make a necklace just like a stretch bracelet? (using a stretch wire and glue). I want to make one for a 90 year old lady and I want to make putting on/take off a necklace super easy for her.
Hi Sophie, We haven't tried making a stretch necklace, but it's worth a try! Here's a link to a stretch bracelet on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/gemstone-stretch-bracelet-video-and-kit/
You can also try using a magnet clasp. Or you could make an Endless Necklace with no clasp: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-an-endless-beaded-necklace-no-clasp/
Just make sure it's long enough to go over her head.
What a nice gift for her!
Jennifer & Kitty
this is fab got the same beads could not figure out what to do thank you
Glad you found us! Be sure to subscribe if you think you might want to see more! J&K
very pretty
Thanks!
What about using fish line,is tht a good method of making long lasting necklaces as well?
Great question Krystal. It is not recommended to use crimp beads on fishing line. The crimp bead is metal and the edge can cut the fishing line and break the necklace. Bead stringing wire is perfect for this project. Here's a video we have explaining what bead stringing wire is: ruclips.net/video/IYdgc3_oDa4/видео.html
And here's the complete how-to for this necklace on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/

Beautiful
Thanks!
This is gorgeous! I've been trying to get up the courage to try making necklaces, I have made several bracelets already. You gals are great, just subscribed!!! :)
Thanks Beth! Go for it! A necklace is just a long bracelet!
I too have been trying to get up some courage to repair some very old pieces that the string has worm out on. Now i feel much more confident and am ready to give it a whirl!
I bought the same thickness wire, and used this process (great video by the way) but it's just so stiff that once it's done I can almost shape the necklace rather than letting it fall naturally. Should I use a better material? I bought stainless steel wire.
Hi Alice, Sorry you are having trouble with the wire. We recommend "Bead Stringing Wire" like this:

I have never made a necklace but now I want to! I was looking for beginner beading for a bracelet but I’m guessing this would work the same for a bracelet, just a shorter price.

And yes, this necklace can simply be made shorter to do a bracelet.

Pretty necklace. Love the beads. What size clam shell bead tips did u use. Are they a 9x3mm
Thanks Laura! Here's the step by step written instructions we posted on our blog. runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
We didn't note the size of the clamshell bead tip, but that size sounds about right. Hope that helps!

Thanks a lot!!! this has inspired me a lot,Great job
+Ohemaa Dorothy Yay! Thanks for watching!
i tried this beads kept fallen off after I was done what size crumble bead are u supposed to use the 2 or 2.5 I got the 2.5 an its not doing so good
Oh no! So sorry Pamela! Here's another video we made that shows how to finish the ends. ruclips.net/video/Ura8R7T7yY0/видео.html
You can add a dab of jewelry glue to the crimp bead inside the clamshell bead tip to make it more secure too. Are the crimp beads sliding through the hole in the clamshell bead tip? Maybe you need to try a bigger size. And be sure to really crimp the bead flat and tight onto the wire. Let us know how we can help!
J&K
Hi! How big are the jump rings that was used? Are they 4mm?
Yes they look to be about 4mm. Here's the how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Cheers,
J&K
i like doing end necklaces
Thank you for this tutorial. Can anyone tell me what size jump rings, crimp beads, and clamshell tip beads I will need when using the exact same wire as the one shown in the video? I'm new here and am finding a variety of sizes for those items. Thank you!
We like jump rings 3 or 4mm, so they are not too horsey. We choose small crimp beads. Beadalon makes a variety pack that mihgt be good get to get started. Google "Beadalon Crimp Tube Variety" to see them. We don't often see options for sizes on clamshell bead tips. Just make sure your crimp beads are smaller than the clamshell. Hope that helps! J&K
Awesome. Thank you. :)
Thanks for watching! J&K
I'm happy to say I'm starting this project should be interesting
We are happy to hear that too!!

Is there a certain size (width) wire that you use for the beads?
We used 49-strand Bead Stringing Wire.
Here's a link to the complete how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
J&K
Hi 🖤 Where do you buy the wire you use in the video?
You can buy bead stringing wire like we used at Michael's, JoAnn, or Hobby Lobby. Or pnline at FireMountainGems.com or Amazon. Hope that helps!
J&K
What size are those biggest beads?
The biggest beads are probably 10mm in diameter on this necklace. Here's the complete how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
Thank you!!
Is fish string or bead wire stronger?
We prefer using wire and thread meant for jewelry just so we know what we are getting. The beading wire is very strong!
J&K
Hello. I am a beginner wanna-B. Where do I get those tools? Craft stores or Home Depot/ Menards?
We recommend Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Joann. Or you can find them on Amazon.
Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
Where did u get the beads from! Please share the best online store
Hi Anju,
We buy beads from Amazon, FireMountainGems.com, PandaHall.com, and Etsy. We also shop a lot at Hobby Lobby, Joann, and Michael's. Hope that helps!
J&K
The O'Neil Sisters thanks a lot 😊 Expecting more videos from you guys !
We post a new one every week!
J&K
What wire did you use?
Hi Natasha,
We used Beadalon Bead Stringing Wire, 49-strand, in a color called Bright. It looks like this: amzn.to/3efbXMf
We have a complete explanation of what kind of wire to use and why in the how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Hope that helps!
J&K
The O'Neil Sisters Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
What is the name of these clasps used at the end, before the final one....?
We used a toggle clasp for this necklace. To attaching it we used clamshell bead tips. Here's the complete written how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Hope that helps!
Jennifer & Kitty
The video was very informative and precise; nonetheless, the clam shell bead caps are not secure. The jumpring will detach from them unless soldering is done. A pretty necklace fail is what you will get.
Yes Deena! Soldering is a great technique for securing handmade jewelry. We are just showing a different way that a beginner can do. And so far, we haven't had any trouble with the bead tips opening up or coming loose. But if you prefer to solder, you can certainly adjust this how-to to include soldering.
Great point!
J&K
Nice
Thanks!
what brand of tools are the ones you're using?
Hi Eva, We love these tools. They are made by Euro Tool and are called the Glitter Line. Here's what they look like:
Chain-nose pliers: amzn.to/2Kusrah
Round-nose pliers: amzn.to/37tdZID
And they sell a set of five tools that includes both kinds of pliers plus wire cutters: amzn.to/3akiiaZ
Here's the written how-to for this necklace on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Cheers!
Jennifer & Kitty
@@TheONeilSisters Thank you very much for such fast reply! I really appreciate it, love those tools!
We love them! Plus the glitter in the handles makes them easy to pick out from our other tools as "the good ones."
J&K
Thank you, you're the best!@@TheONeilSisters
@@TheONeilSisters Could you please share the info about the kind of beads you're using? They are beautiful. Thank you
Very nice design👍
Can you please tell what are the sizes of the beads used in this design..
Here's the written how to for this projectL runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
We didn't note the sizes of the beads because you can really use any beads. But looking at the necklace, we'd guess the large rondelles are 10mmx12mm, the mediums might be 4mmx8mm, and the smalls could be 4mmx5mm. But as we said, we're not positive. Hope that helps! J&K
how long is this necklace
Great question! We added 17 inches of beads and the clasp adds about an inch and a half, so the final length is 18.5". You can make it longer or shorter by adjusting the number of beads. Here's the complete how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Cheers!
Jennifer & Kitty
Are you not supposed to apply super glue when closing the clamp?
You can definitely add a drop of glue. A little added security!
J&K
it very pretty necklace
Thank you Katie!
Tart molds! Lol I used to make candles and tarts
Fun!
i love necklaces pattern
+tara lange Thanks Tara! We think it turned out so pretty!
👍👍
Thanks!

New would make ear rings go with it
It would be fun to make matching earrings! Great idea!
J&K
Can input my beads on crochet thread?
Hi Denise,
We don't recommend using thread for this project because the crimp beads cut into the thread and weaken it. Here's the complete how-to on our blog: runningwithsisters.com/how-to-make-a-beaded-necklace/
Let us know if you have any other questions!
Cheers,
J&K
What number or size wire did you use specifically?
+Shirley Sherlock We used Beadalon 49-strand bead stringing wire in the color "Bright." But you could substitute 19-strand or 7-strand. We have a video explaining bead stringing wire if you want to learn more about what the numbers mean. ruclips.net/video/IYdgc3_oDa4/видео.html
