Whatever Happened To Boosted Boards?

- Remember Boosted Boards? Back in the mid-2010s, Boosted was one of the most popular electric skateboard manufacturers in the world largely due to its popularity online. The most notable individual pushing Boosted was none other than Casey Neistat, but we saw several other viral videos using Boosted as well. For example, there were a few viral magic carpet pranks that were down using Boosted Boards. But, despite being one of the most recognizable names within the electric space, Boosted has since filed for bankruptcy and liquidated all of its assets. Many would point to an incident with their skateboards catching on fire as the primary reason that Boosted went under, but in reality, their fate was sealed long before their battery overheating issues. The truth was that the target market for high-end electric skateboards was rather small. Not to mention, companies like Lime and Bird were offering a much cheaper renting alternative. This video explains the rise and fall of one of the most iconic social media-based brands: Boosted.

The only reason they failed was the timing of their debts, reliance on China, and getting caught up in Trump’s tariffs. No one gave a shit about their initial battery issue.
Not quite they can’t compete with Chinese knockoffs
@@Jeez001 No, at the time they had the largest possible battery approved by TSA and had proven they cared about battery QA with the initial recall. Generic Chinese batteries in stuff like hoverboards are why they were all blowing up during the same time period.
@@AustinCameronBare in mind how heavy it must be.
Plus, ya know, fake celebrity and a crap product no one cared about
Consumerist crap btfo'd
Another problem:
- the bracket of people who earn enough to want to spend on Boosted are... typically more security-minded. And skate boards are quite dangerous, hence mismatched with their required customers.
I will always remember how unsafe I felt on one, and the way a friend flew off her long board from a tiny bump.
Sounds like a skill issue😂
Ah very true
Meh. I’m a “rich guy” and have several onewheels and other similar small person EVs
Yeah. I’ve owned a long board here in NYC that I would ride off and on for years-never really mastering it. I thought about a boosted board but that price was a non starter. Anyway, after flying off my board everytime I ran over a pebble I was done with the damn thing. Not worth the risk
A fast ebike is better
A lot of people here saying the boards were dangerous, and yes they are, but the root of the problem is that riding a skateboard is DIFFICULT. The founders of Boosted should have had that in mind. The niche they were targeting was too small and their prices too high.
In my opinion, boosted board paved the way for the e-bike era we’re in right now
The price was ridiculously expensive in 2019 they were selling for $1200... Like hell no, almost no one can afford that for the market that wants to ride them. And competition started coming out that made the same-looking board for half the price.
1200 bucks was worth it. I had the V2 and got the Stealth once it was released.
Still have em both. They were the Ferrari of electric skateboards, competitors weren't even close.
@@unlazyfreethere were lots of better option that had more power and more range for the same price or even cheaper. I bought a cheap TeamGee for like 300 bucks that had a 9 miles range and the battery was hidden inside the deck so no one knew it was electric till I flew past them. It lasted me 1300 miles
2019 that could get you a decent whip that could take you from A to B just fine
Glad you got to electric scooters by the end, completely agree. Cheaper, easier for most people to ride with the handlebars, slightly bigger wheels for more stability. I had one to commute from my house to the bus, and from the bus to my work in downtown Seattle.
Yep, much more practical and affordable option for most
I would venture to say a majority of the population doesn't even know how to ride a skateboard, let alone use one on a regular basis.
They're extremely dangerous. I knew three guys in college that had them, and all three fell off and sustained moderate injuries. One broke his wrist, and the other two were on a similar level.
I rode them myself. Imagine braking on a wooden board going 20mph. The board slows down, but you still have momentum, and you're not secured to the board in any way. You have to coordinate your hand movements on the remote very carefully with your center of balance. If you slam the brakes, the board will stop but you'll keep going.
Ah, this is definitely a serious concern
For those who got good at riding e-boards, it’s not that hard to shift momentum to adjust for acceleration or braking. The problem is in emergency situations like rough roads or cars/ bikes getting in your path it’s not safe. One wheel is easier to ride safely since it handles bumps and easier to dismount but your point remains, people with money tend to not want to risk injuries as much.
I rode my Gen 1 Boosted for years until the battery crapped out. Braking isn't bad at all. You just need to lean back to balance things out

@@Daemon125 yeah, and ur grip tape will keep u on the board
I bought a wowgo in 2018 for $380 and I still use it today. Ive put hundreds of miles on it and many wheels. It still gets 10 miles out of the original 12 with the same battery. Great boards don't have to be $1000+. That was part of their problem....
you could literally say lexus is the same as toyota
they make it from A to B the same, has roughly same everything, but one is made more luxurious
i got a meepo and the second i used a boosted, i couldnt go back
sold my meepo instantly
sold my evlove gen 2 too
boosted was literally the best thing there was
it did not have the best torque, best speed, nor best range, but the amount you can control is WAY beyond all other boards
it would be hard to notice if you aint a daily rider
Actualy i remember in 2010s a lot of goverment officials, lawyers, buisness owners and other high earning people used to ride these in EU along side monocikes, bycikels, e bikes, and early inegration of e scooter like we have today
Hahaha, for some reason, that’s so hard weird for me to imagine 😂
How can u speak so well. I mean I learn languages and u are a hidden gem putting aside ur magnificent content, but also u're capable to manipulate vwery well the grammar cafting so cool, the question left to u is how many laguages do u speak and are u learning more ,if don't mind u
i myself have a Loaded Tan Tien flex 1 and once used the boosted that i friend of mine got and to be honest i was scared like i felt unsafe on it because of the weirdly fast acceleration that you get in comparrision to my foot powered one. also its heavy compared to a normal one wich is a consideratrion as you need to usually carry the board when you get to your destination or just have some part where you cant ride it like a gravel road or somewhere where you dont have a hard "smoth" surface
you deserve way more subscribers harry

I'm curious how you are able to release videos so quickly, how do you even find topics and not to mention research them and than edit and animate the video
It’s most likely a team of people behind the channel.
It’s just me and an editor haha. Definitely a grind :)
@@LogicallyAnswered It's great you've sustained the quality too. Do you think it would be possible for me to help you with some of the research and writing for some of your topics? I have watched a lot of your videos and I find them really interesting and I'm curious about what you cover. I think I could be of some help as a business owner myself. I don’t need any compensation either. I can write you some scripts, and you can evaluate them :)
Great video as always
Nice vid, however you didn't mention that boosted took a huge gamble the boosted Rev, a premium electric scooter which had lackluster sales because of all of the competition from the Chinese. Casey also never made a dedicated vid reviewing this product.
I’ve heard just the opposite; the founder never wanted to expand to scooters. That was an investors idea.
(Psst, a notification that your reasonings in the video "why EU hates big tech" are wrong)
Europe doesn't even care about not owning big tech. All those big tech demands are made to make and using the gadgets easier and fairer, no one is rudely making them just to have an excuse to do it. I don't know where you got that idea, its kinda not fun to think that way about people who want to help and make things better
Ah, I see where you’re coming from for sure. And it may very well be a case of me being overly cynical, but I think there’s more to the story. :)
@@LogicallyAnswered yeah I get very clingy when I think something is slightly unfair, its definitely a bad side in myself I think. Thanks
I have mellow eboard with endless mode only the price sucks but i love the mellow.
They were too expensive for the average person who would be interested in it. The technology was very expensive at the time and I doubt Boosted could really lower the price that much. It's a common issue with these luxury mobility devices. They were ahead of their time
I ran a bird scooter business alone for 2 years in Florida. I could go on for hours how bad the business model is. It’s constantly fixing broken parts on scooters, also grabbing them dead from the being in the ocean bay. I’m so glad to be out of that business no longer having a franchise in my town.
I still have 3 of em.

I can’t download the app anymore to check how many miles are on my board
I have the mini x and love it.
I had always wanted one and rode one a few times, yes they were pricey. The scooter was the fail that helped bring them down
I did not even know they exist
People did call Boosted the "Apple of eBoards" - but not because they were so good. Rather because they were so expensive and the specs were so much lower than their competitors. This is why they failed - Evolve killed them with their (then) newly released GT board that cost far less, did far more (2-in-1 + AT wheels) and had ranges that exceeded Boosted by something 5-fold. Evolve are still going strong, although ironically, *they* are now called the Apple of eSkate, for the same reason - their competitors are far cheaper with far larger specs.
Wow you making me feel pretty good about my self as im literally that small percent that your talking about that can spend money on the board and ride it around the city as i live downtown tbh i didnt think it was that special bc i always compared it to a car or bike but if you compare it to the humble skateboard then yea it makes sense tbh tho boosted boards to big i picked up this other board much better in my opinion goes 30-35kmh and a range of around 20-25km and isnt as large sadly that company went out of business too but at least its easy to swap the parts to a different board as its made for your standard 30-32” deck
they shouldve made a board or scooter at a lower affordable price point to keep afloat
One wheel is somehow cheaper than the boosted board
+ it is close to useless during rainy season, if you often need to use it outdoor.
I build my own Electric board they aren't useless in rain
how did you build it to be water tight?@@nightmareinaction629
After a few years there was also cheaper alternatives that were decent for elongboards
Why he making it sound like 400, even 1000 is like buying a house. Most people can afford to save for that even if it takes months💀
Make a video about hoverboards
Thanks for the suggestion Papasot!
Thisbreminds me of Vanmoof...
Let's be practical. In London, where lots of cyclists get hurt every year, using a Boosted Board is risky. The roads have potholes, are tight, and there are many bikes and cars. It's not practical. Unlike electric scooters that can make sharp turns, this board can't. It's a cool idea but not practical. People feel more confident when steering with their hands.
I would like to ask is that from your personal experience of ridding a skateboard.?
@@BL4K_B4BIES not op but i rode boards in san fran and a lot of socal for couple of years. its true, boards cant make sharp turns unless you know how to "slide" which is really difficult. even loose trucks make it hard to turn on a dime or less. the wheels are smooth so even softer longboard wheels are susceptible to small rocks that can stop the board immediately and send you flying. skateboards are a pain in the ass. its also hard to slow the boards without using your sneakers to scrape against the ground.
Me watching a video about electric board.... suddenly wild Shell pertrol station appears, do a double take - LOL I know that street - 7:54 mark. Even google maps has those lime scooters there. Manchester Cromwell Road
Love the videos bro! I'm just curious, are you using AI for your whole face in the video or just the eyes?
No ai at all haha :)
I think I've ridden an electric scooter like 5 times. I remember loading my account with $10 because I knew I'd use it for a week long job but they kind of sucked.
Hey you said Capping 7:10 Cap lol cool slang
i still have one and it works properly
Can’t wait for big A to watch this on a get smarter Saturday
Onewheel is by far safer and more superior than electric skateboards based on my experience. Electric skateboards can throw you off easily when hitting a cable or small cracks, so you’ll never feel confident going fast in non-bike specific roads due to its hard wheels. Onewheel is built to go off-road with its thick soft wide tires.
Scooter is in a completely different category IMO. It’s not portable or allowing hand free usage. It’s also no where as fun. It’s good for transport only.
Casey stopped happening. Mon bros was giving them publicity for days.
It was too expensive thats why. Why buy a boosted board when you can buy a cheaper alternative because boosted not only set on fire but why buy something that expensive when i can savw money with another product and buy an awesome pc on top of that
Good product but niche (college students), and too expensive for that niche.
Besides the fact that most people.. don't ride skateboards.
Ummm.. Who the hell is Casey Neistat?
Ok... Google search... Oh.. He's a nobody.
Now this story makes sense. 🙄
he had some viewers on youtube
Never heard of this product🤣
Electric scooters also became a thing that where safer and cheaper and faster
You weren’t even allowed to ride it in Europe.
Lucid is only $100,000 im surprised thats quite similiar to tesla yet there better idk at least for me the opposite of what your saying applys like personally wasnt a fan of boosted board but love electric skateboards and one day ill swap my car for an ev but as i live downtown theres no point in even having a car if you have am electric skateboard
electric skateboard vs electric bike. opinions?
safer with the bicycle. get one with some cargo capacity. a narrow box or whatever. get one that goes 40 kmh. ull be happpy. get the fulll rain kit for it with mud flaps.
@@snorttroll4379 yeah I'll convert the bike I have to an electric one
Yeah no one wants a lucid with the velcro internal panels falling off XD they definitely are not the leader in electric or anything for that matter.. Tesla is and since everyone, including Lucid, is using their charger... it shows
No singel misstep made this company go bankrupt, its the overpriced piece of garbage. No board is worth a grand, its just so expensive for absolutely nothing. 1 motor for a grand is just halarious.
Hahaha savage take
the whole designing a motorized skateboard from scratch is utter bs in my opinion. it definitely seems like the electronics were made from scratch, and maybe the even had their trucks and decks made custom, but really its a decent implementation for an electric longboard. anyone that would seriously redesign from the ground up would have chosen bigger wheels, with actual tires. at that point you get electric mountainboards or sth like the BajaBoard (though those tend to be more extreme/ for sports). I've ridden similar longboards for 10's of KMs one way, and at some point just stopped because road conditions just get super annoying, in Germany, Belgium and even Netherlands. you constantly have to watch out for whats on the road, how the road is doing, and if its too uneven everything just vibrates. ( i guess on only a campus with nice asphalt that works, but then it seems even more overkill)
it is odd that the wheels were the exact same as typical longboard wheels, soft and smooth, instead of actual tyres. rlly strange
eBikes killed this product..
Now they are busted boards
I don't even not remember them, I've straight up never heard of them before.
Must not have watched Casey Nesitat haha :)

Hahaha
what issues does that come with?

This makes me very sad, I really liked Boosted, and wish I got one.. Hopefully this concept is refined and resurrected.
Try a Segway Ninebot S. It's not nearly as cool-looking, but it's way safer and more comfortable to ride.
@bobbyc1120 Update: looked up electric skateboards, the market is still alive! 💚

Dear Logically Answered, please make a video on brainrot contents like skibidi toilet for kids and how to save our kids from it.

I think main reason they failed is that you can now build your own electric board for under 600 and have it go 40mph and longer rnage with cheaper conponents and replacable
I hate when people add RUclips views together as a total number of people watching, People rewatch videos sometimes 5+ times and they keep watching videos, RUclips needs to add total views and total individual people viewed, like if I watch your video five times it’s not five people watching your video. It’s one person watching your video five times over again. It’s like those videos with billions of views billions of individual people did not click on the video. You got to think of all the tricks people do to explode their channel like bot, clickers, and bots in general giving millions of people millions of views and millions of dollars they don’t deserve.
Bro, please don’t show your face in between. Your voice is great. Just a suggestion/ opinion. Take it with a pinch of salt.
Or maybe just a niche product regardless.........and pave the way for ebike??? Come on - bikes paved the way for ebikes. Like ICE cars paved the way for ev cars.... Hype always overheats markets. The basics haven't changed for a long time.
If they made a 250$ version I would have got it on the spot. Shame on them for being to money hungry.
they tried to lower the cost. Mini S was $750. If you want the real boosted feel it was $1500
