  • Trajectory-based warfare games are few and far between, and when I think about it, I can only name two off the top of my head. One being Scorched Earch, an old-school tank game, and Worms.... Worms Armageddon Anniversary Edition seemed to be announced out of nowhere a few weeks ago, and it's already here. What's It Like? Grab some sheep, load your bazooka, and steer clear of the holy hand grenades as we review Worms Armageddon Anniversary Edition for Nintendo Switch.

As someone who was following the Amiga at the time, I think the video almost understated how enthusiastic Team 17 was about Worms before it released. Team 17 was pretty big on the Amiga, at the time, and we already knew them for their releases. But the word, in even the Amiga magazine blurbs, was that Worms was literally Team 17's greatest weapon. This indie game, made by 1 person, and Team 17 were harping about that Worms is likely to be their biggest hit yet. That caused quite a stir, in the Amiga community. It brought the attention on the level of something like Sensible Soccer or Alien Breed, or a big Psygnosis Title. So Amiga gamers were all ready to snap up a copy to find out what the buzz was. True to their word, it was as addictive as they come.
One of the things that usually doesn't get mentioned was that Worms: Director's Cut had a feature the other Worms games didn't have. The ability for you to create your own pictures and bitmaps to use as Worms Levels. They have to be converted to IFF form, and there is a transparent layer for that. Anyway, I had folders full of levels made up of pics to use as worms levels. It was a novel thing which was unique to the Amiga, but for non-artists, the level seed, and combination of level generator switches may have worked better for them.
I know the director's cut even had this setting called something like (outlines) where instead of it generating the levels like it usually would, it could generate them where all the land masses had maybe half a worm's height of thickness, making some freaky multi-tiered looking levels made out of what would be like taking a rope, putting the ends down where the water would be, and making various shapes out of it and acting out like they are land masses.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful insight on the original release! They certainly broke th emold with Worms and the series just kept getting better. I played the demo on a PC Powerplay disc back in the mid 90's from memory, I couldn't get enough of it!

Damn. I haven't heard about Scorched Earth in ages. The hours I spent playing Scorched Earth, Gorillas and Worms as a kid.
Man this is giving me memories. The first program I ever wrote was Gorillas. Learned it from a QBasic book I got with my first DOS PC. It's funny. I can't remember my shopping list but I can remember QBasic stuff I haven't used in 25 years.

Despite my memory loss, I still remember Scorched Earth! Such a great game that paved the way for Worms!

With the physical edition releasing in December it might be people still wait for that to release. I love the look and feel of WMD. What would you say are some advantages Armageddon has over WMD?

Does it have the soundtracks from the N64 or no?

I'm unsure sorry. There's a music player on there but it just has the track titles, and doesn't say if it's platform specific.

And Online works great too, there are just not enough switch gamers online yet. Anybody knows if the online mode is cross platform. I doubt it. This Worms is the best of the series. Come on join some online battles guys!! XD

I think it's only for friends in a closed ecosystem. Not matchmaking

@@UNUNUN11 Worms, from conception, prided itself on couch multiplayer, so you're covered there. Online is the extra. The online uses surprisingly simple net traffic for it to work well. (This game was made back when Narrowband was a thing.) So online should be smooth, once you find games.
I might look into seeing about a Discord, as that is often how a number of slightly more niche (these days) games gets easy players to find. I do hope, as the days go on (and those physical copies release) this game takes off. It really does make for a good holiday game to play.
