Yes, there are black bears at Crater Lake.

I would recommend it (especially if you feel safer with it). Other tips: do not run from bears (or mountain lions), don't turn your back to them, stand tall waving your arms to make yourself to look bigger and slowly back away while firmly yelling at it to go. That being said, it’s very unlikely that you’ll encounter bears or mountain lions.
