Great video as always. For the exhaust, the muffler is most likely a standard Honda part off a Civic. Most of the exhaust likely is, too. The dash rattles are an easy and cheap fix. Buy a roll of narrow self-adhesive foam weather strip. Put a bit between any two pieces that are rattling, and problem solved. Luckily, I have not got that issue on my 400,000 mile Volvo, but a friend did on his mom's 135,000 mile Cadillac!

Owned one, most reliable, used no oil. Reluctantly sold it on after 10 years of trouble free motoring. Only a wheel Bering replaced in all the time.

I had a brown acclaim in the early 90s, so light used to bounce instead of wheel spin.
Had a holiday in 94 in keswick, was in takeaway and noticed this guy walking around car, he came into takeaway and offered to buy car, i told him we had 10 days left of holiday and how would i get back home, he said at end of holiday if car was in same nick he would take us home.
He was a collector and didnt have an acclaim.
Anyway, i turned him down, loved me acclaim

My first two cars - both diarrhoea yellow. Great cars and surprisingly fast, loved them both. NNP 743Y and FGH 786X.

Captain 70’s. as someone who was born in the 70’s i remember these well with my childhood as they were quite ubiquitous at the time; they seemed to almost always be bought by middle aged or retired people as I recall. Two of my school friends dads had them when I was at Juniors... but it’s rare to see them now, hope you keep yours on the road, from three metres it looks a nice old bus!

My parents owned one when I was a boy I learned to drive in it and then drove it regularly until I got my own first car a mini clubman. The acclaim (A706 TFE) was a fantastic car and apart from having an issue with exhaust/manifold breaking a lot I don’t think it was any bother at all.

Lived until 1998 according to the DVLA car tax checker. Not bad!

I think that indicator issue is an earth fault that confuses the flasher, had it on the SIII at one point. Shame about the rust scabs but it's great to see it running well. The bloke in the taxi at 13:36 was having a good look!

    • @CaptainSlow1992
      @CaptainSlow1992  5 лет назад +1

Yup, deffo an earth fault. Only an issue with the R/N/S light cluster, given all the contacts a clean to no avail so it must be something else. Rust is just the joys of UK motoring and 6 months of road salt every year, given it's an Aberdeenshire car it's a miracle it still exists.
I did consider doing a slow zoom on taxi man but I couldn't be arsed editing. ;)

I had one. Only thing was rust. The inner rear wheel arches are perhaps the critical point.

The car is complete only because of that Hub Nut sticker in the window ✅. Wiper test thrown in to further complete the review...! 👍

For people going from a 1300/1500 Dolomite to an Acclaim must have been a Revelation to buyers back in the day for starters the reliability would have been far better.
However the Dolomites and Toledo’s were closer to being real and original Triumphs than the Acclaim was.
Keep us updated on your Dolly with the engine swap etc.

My 1984 Acclaim HL has the exact same problem with the indicator when I'm breaking - though for me its the right indicator. It is annoying, but at least it tells me that my brake light is working.

I really don't think of these as a British cars at all. Far too well made and reliable! Thank goodness for the Honda partnership. Gave BL some latter day credibility.

I've gone over every connector on that light cluster to no avail! Think there must be something wrong with that unit, quite common on Acclaims...

  • @TheMicksterdee

The 1.3 engine on the Triumph Acclaim was far too weak. I used to drive regularly between Lincolnshire and Sheffield, and the car used to labour on the climb between Doncaster and Rotherham on the M18 motorway

It certainly lacks torque in the mid range. On uphill stretches I often find myself at 60mph in 4th gear.

Isn't it the same motor they put in the Rover 213 a bit later? Had one of those, no bother at all despite high miles.
