Uninvited visitors at my homestead!

  • I have finally started my solo off-grid shipping container home build and I could not be more excited!
In the last couple of weeks, I finished building my own house foundations for under $6k when I was quoted $60k for contractors to do it, I installed a concrete shed slab myself for under $4k, and I got the SHIPPING CONTAINERS delivered and placed on the footings I built before winter hit!
This week I need to finish getting my posts in for my jetty before the dam fills up and due to some uninvited guests, I'll be making a temporary gate.
I have recently moved across the country due to the housing crisis and bought an off-grid property with the dream to build my own container house.
I became an owner builder and after 8 months of design and planning I was approved to build my own home in Western Australia.
Subscribe to my channel to watch me build my shipping container home and off grid dream homestead! #containerhome #solobuild #offgridliving #homesteading #budget

Just a friendly tip with shipping containers, when you open them and go inside make sure the levers are latched back to the container door with the swivel bit because if you don't and a freak wind blows the door shut you're locked in, people have come to grief like this because they couldn't get out and help didn't come soon enough, not trying to be a kill joy but it's a simple thing that a lot of people overlook.

With so much clay in your soil, you could extract the clay out of it, build a kiln, and make pottery. So many possibilities: plant containers, bowls, mugs, dog bowls, outdoor oven, etc. All basically free.

On your wood gate instead of using varnish if you can get used motor oil and some diesel fuel do a 80/20 mix and use that on any wood that you have outdoors. It will persevere the wood for many many years and the bugs won’t touch it! Good Luck!

your gate will sag over time. if you had made the cross member start at the top by the beam and end at the bottom near the connector it will last longer. when it starts at the bottom it helps keep its shape but the support isnt there for the bottom over time. when you make a gate that is not temporary make sure you put the support at the top connecting to the beam.

Two tips one of which I'm sure that you already do, and that is lock your containers that you are using to store your equipment. With so many people driving onto your property you never can tell what they are looking for. The second tip is to get some white paint, write private property on your gate, and maybe even add no entry. Just for your own peace of mind. You are doing a great job all round keep up the good work.

Great to see what you are doing , I worked with shipping containers for thirty years if you want to make it easy peasy to open the doors just cut yourself a length of scaffold pole place the pole over the handle then use the pole as a lever you will thank me for ever lol it makes them a breeze to open and close the longer the pike the easier it is ,have s new subscriber from UK good luck with your project

Use your shipping container lach handle to open up the doors easier.
You have to turn the Lach around more it then pushes the doors open for you. 👍

The angle pieces on the gate are backward of how they should be. Should be top from the post to the bottom of where they connect. That is how it supports the weight.

You could try the old 'stick gate'. 3 strands of barbed wire attached to the post on one side and a star picket on the other. Put a circle of wire on the bottom and the top of the other post. The star picket sits inside the bottom ring and then you tension the 'gate' by putting the top ring over the top of the star picket. Add a couple of droppers or 'sticks' in the centre to hold it together

String up a tarp down at the pond. It'll give you a dry workspace without having to pack up everything and waste time and energy hauling everything back up to the containers. Everywhere that you put a screw into the gate railings, you need at least two. Great job, looking for the next video.

What an awesome video mate , the gates were a brilliant idea and you do need privacy because technically by law if your property has no gate then they can say they made a mistake and thought it was a track but with gates they would have to actually open them or climb over the fence and that's trespassing ... that jetty will look great a brilliant idea , can't wait to see the work on the containers , we'll done, looks better and better each video🙏

I do tree felling and wood cutting on my friends farm in winter couple of chainsaws a ute and a high sided trailer and we go around the property cutting up Mainly the trees pushed over by the wind but also some that are dead standing the standing ones I just cut a "V" in the base as low as I can go safely and on the side you want it to fall naturally sometimes the angle of the tree will dictate that cut the tree into manageable lengths in the trailer then up to the hydraulic wood splitter where we split them into fireplace sized chunks we usually leave these next to the splitter for a year or two which is at the top of the mountain on a huge rock (his farm is located on basically a rocky mountain) to dry out a bit

you should clear some of the trees around your living area, given the fire risk in the Australian outback. either that or get a really good water pump to put out fires using the water in your reservoir.

For 20 years we raised Shetland Sheep for boutique knitters wool. We would always make sure the rams were paddocked down by the gate. There's nothing like a big set of horns and a bad attitude when it comes to discouraging unwanted visitors.
(my avatar is a pic of our last ram**.... those serrated horns are REAL, and the extra traction he got when hitting a knee was like adding a box-grater to a sledgehammer.... complete overkill)
**RIP Race (named for the Johnny Quest cartoon character. we also had Bandit, Hadji... we had some silly themes for naming our 4-legged furry kids.) He actually damaged other rams' horns with those serrations... left big, scooped gouges in horn, and could rip a thigh if he got you just right. Loved/hated that brute.
