High Velocity aka Touge King ~The Spirits~ is fantastic and without any doubt one of the most impressive 3D racing games on the SEGA Saturn. It was CAVE's very first game and had next to non pop ups. I ♥ this game!
I would most definitely recommend Power Drift. I played the hell out of it in the arcades and it took many years before a home machine could reproduce it reasonably faithfully. The first time I saw it and played it on the Saturn I was blown away…
Dude, I’m a minute in and I love it - Road Rash was SO underrated now, but at the height of its popularity, what an awesome mid-90s time capsule. I love it! 💪🏻💪🏻🔥🙌🏻🙌🏻🔥
4:31 I’ve always lamented the fact that Manxx TT didn’t get the Mitsuyoshi treatment 😩 Dude, *fantastic* video!!! 🙏🙌🏻🔥🔥🙌🏻💪🏻 I promise not going to comment on every entry, but I’ll say at 4:31 that I hope SEGA Touring Car is on the list, that the 3D pad is recommended, and possibly most importantly- that banger soundtrack gets a shoutout!!! Thanks Dave!!! Great video! 😄😄🙏🙏🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥🙌🏻💪🏻🙌🏻💪🏻
Great video! Daytona USA would definitely be my favorite racing game for the Saturn as well, also mostly for nostalgia reasons since it was one of the first games I got for my Saturn way back in the day. All these years later I still have that "DAY-TOOO-NAAAAA!!!!!" jingle playing in my head.
Awesome video Dave! Love to see more stuff like this. Two of my favorites that werent mentioned are Wipeout XL and Wangan Dead Heat, both of em are great fun.
Yeah, Wangan Dear Heat (or Highway 2000 which I own) is fun, but it's also very simple and repetitive, and it just gets old fast for me, even with the girls and FMV of the Japanese version. You're right about Wipeout, though. I should have gone with that instead of the first game, but it slipped my mind...
@SEGASATURNSHIRO Ah sorry I actually was referring to the second game, Wangan Dead Heat + Real Arrange. I love geeking out on how amazing the FMV looks with the MPEG card installed, even if the girls aren't the best looking. Truth be told though, I haven't played the first game (Highway 2000) enough to say how different Real Arrange is in the gameplay though, I always reach for the sequel haha.
For Manx TT Superbike, I wouldn't be surprised if someone might make a mod that adds more tracks to the game. I hope that happens some day. The Saturn homebrew community had been flourishing as of late.
Thank-you Dave for this great video, I like this casual unscripted format. I have fond memories of first seeing Daytona USA at a Sears kiosk and I loved it from day 1, hearing that amazing "Roolllling Staaaart" and the roar of that Gallop engine. I knew the frame rate was less than Model 2, but I couldn't care less! It too is my fave racer on Saturn. And thanks for the tips on 3 D control pad for Touring Car and Manx, I need to buy one from ebay Japan, but they are getting a little bit pricey now. thanks again for your awesome videos.
Cracking vid dude - good to see a few I’ve forgotten about and will give them another crack! You’re v kind about virtua racing - I can’t quite bring myself to join you on that as it’s pretty ropey!
Solid list, Dave. And i agree with putting Daytona USA at the top. It might have been nowhere near a perfect arcade port but something about that Saturn version just felt nice. I have major appreciation for SEGA Rally and agree when people place it at the top of their lists, and from a critiquing stand-point i'd agree with them too, but on a personal level in the comfort of my own tastes i find Daytona to be my favourite of the lot. I really wanted Daytona CCE to match the feel that the original Daytona had but it just wasn't even close, which is a shame.
Hey thanks, Digi! Yeah, Daytona is really special. I feel like *VIBE* plays a huge role in what made 90's Sega games so good. Often times it's an intangible quality that is hard to describe, but you know it when a game has it... I think Daytona USA was a good example of this.
Great video! Unscripted and uncut, love that! I had Touring Car when it was new, and I played it without the 3D pad. Even then, I liked it a lot! Too bad most people give up on it.
It's not quite in my top 10 translation wishlist, but Initial D Saturn could get there as more of the great titles keep getting translated. Seems like it wouldn't be the toughest project but would make the game a lot more fun.
Nice video; Daytona USA and Panzer Dragoon were the biggest early draws that compelled me to pick up the Saturn; previously I picked up the Sega mainline consoles (Master System, Genesis) right at launch but for the Saturn I did wait about three months before making the investment. Did you play the Japan Circuit edition of Daytona USA? They restored the beloved music from the original, further improved the draw in, and from what I understand tweaked the drifting to make it feel more like the original, and well as adding a couple of other features.
Yeah, I tried it (and I do appreciate the music restoration), but alas... It's still Sega Rally with a Daytona USA 'paint job', and if I want to play Sega Rally, I'll just play Sega Rally...
I hope he does Silent Hill and Spyro as well. I'm curious about how well the Saturn would handle the fog in Silent Hill. Would it even need the dithering filter that the PS1 used to hide the banding issue?
@@SomeOrangeCat That kind of stuff is coming from gaming press coverage of it. You've got a problem with their clickbait titles. Frogbull doesn't try to create hype for full releases.
19:19 You can't just admit that! Don't you know that some people out there think the Console Wars of the 90's was a real thing and you can't ever say your system is inferior! *Slowly hides own copy of the game on PS1* I can't believe you! Joking aside it's a pretty good video and it was interesting to hear your takes on some of them.
In the end the "problem" with most of these racers on the Saturn is that they surprisingly don't have arcadey pick & play gameplay while also being hard as nails, or that they just start up slow because they want you to engage with tuning, so people try them one time and then drop 'em.
Yeah, I suppose that applies to about 4 of the games I mentioned, but it certainly has several pick up and play racers. The ones that do take time to get good at definitely reward your perseverance by being some of the best racers on the system...
No love for Daytona USA Championship Circuit Edition Dave? I get why people were disappointed with it (on account of it playing nothing like the OG Saturn and arcade versions of Daytona), but I feel if you can look past that you've still got a very decent looking and playing arcade racer that's also got a 2 player mode.
Pretty good game, but ultimately it's very repetitive and boring to me... Drift King 97 is infinitely better, and satisfies that highway driving itch...
Pfffff all folly! Nothing beats Checkered Flag for the Atari Jaguar, the greatest videogame of alllllll time!! Lol kidding. Sega Rally and or original Daytona. I love the Galloping butt end of the car bouncing to the music! Lol.
Hi shiro, do you know if wangan trial love has a 2 player split screen mode? It's a car rpg type of game and the graphics looks pretty decent especially the sports cars, also do you think this might get a English translation?
Not that I know of, but it's definitely one that would benefit MOST from such a fan project. Rather than just for aesthetic purposes, a translation would make it so much more playable!
Very original list. I would rank them a lot differently. Touring Car and VR Virtua Racing a lot lower, Road Rash and The Need for Speed a lot higher. Interesting video though!
Yeah, I mean they're all so great, and any 'ranking' on my part is pretty arbitrary at the end of the day... There are others that I would have liked to include as well, but it was just too many.

Yeah, that's a fun one, and a testament to just how many great racers there are on Saturn. I didn't even think of that one when making my list... 🤔
Love the F1 Challenge music in the background
I warm up with sega rally and my 4 year-old son on weekends before enjoying my racing rig for Dirt rally at night! Great video 👍
Oooh, I LOVE the DIRT series! Great games.
Sega Touring Car and Sega Rally Championship were def my favorite racing games on the Saturn. great stuff.
Sega Touring Championship looks really good!

Definitely a little treasure trove of some of the best racing games of all time, right here on the Saturn!

I'm always learning more about the Saturn even after all these years. Thanks Dave. What an awesome video. I wouldn't mind seeing more of these!
I'll do my best... 🙏

It's true. So much better than a lot of folks realize!
Ya gotta try the wheel with Monaco GP on SEGA Memorial Selection Vol.2, really makes the game.
UH... Hellz yeah! LOVE Super Monaco GP! Will definitely check it out!
Can you do a video on the wheel vs. 3D control pad on a few racing games? Keep up the good channel!
I love the thumbnail with the fat pipes coming out of the battery/mpg/satiator slot and the spoiler ...did you illustrate that yourself?
Yeah, haha. Just a quick little Photoshop job... 😉😜

You absolutely missed what should be the No. 1 racing game on the Saturn - Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition
Fly like the sons of angels, baby
Oh, I mentioned it... 😆
Hell yeah. This is the content I pay for
Glad to hear the enthusiasm!
Virtua Racing is the best of the bunch in my opinion. Out of all the 3D Sega arcade games, thats the one I pumped the most money into.
Jeez, I forgot how good the graphics are on Manx TT and Initial D.

Still waiting for Frogbull to port Gran Turismo to Saturn
I hope he does Silent Hill and Spyro as well. I'm curious about how well the Saturn would handle the fog in Silent Hill. Would it even need the dithering filter that the PS1 used to hide the banding issue?
You mean "replicate a specific scene of GT and then never revisit the project", right? Because that's the way all of his Saturn "ports" end up.
@@SomeOrangeCat That kind of stuff is coming from gaming press coverage of it. You've got a problem with their clickbait titles. Frogbull doesn't try to create hype for full releases.
@@jongeo So which is it then? You say he never commits to making full ports, but are also saying "I'm waiting for him to port this!"
