We all live in the Truman Show today. Cameras are everywhere, including in our cars. Dash cameras have been a popular way for years to show off driving skills, monitor passengers or as a bit of proof in case of accidents. Now, the quality of dash cams is improving thanks to the addition of 4K resolution making for sharper, clearer videos. Nextbase has launched its 622GW 4K Dash Cam . I had a chance to spend a few weeks with this camera to see what it can do.

This camera is loaded with features. It has 4K video quality at 30fps, Super Slow Motion at 1080p and 120fps, and Enhanced Night Vision settings to capture critical details on dark highways or foggy streets. A 3” touchscreen on the back lets you view and control the camera and a microphone will record audio in the car.
This dash camera will automatically save any footage when a crash or bump is detected.
You can choose your recording loop settings from 1 to 3 minutes. The Dash Cam will continue recording, filling the memory card. When the memory card is full, the oldest file will be automatically deleted to make space for the new recording but Protected Files will not be deleted. An emergency record/save button on the back of the camera will let you protect any footage you choose.
The Nextbase 622GW is the world's first Dash Cam to use what3words, and that helps provide your exact location within a square to help emergency services or loved ones locate you. No data connection is needed. The dash camera has Alexa built in so you can talk directly to your camera and be hands free. It’s easy to set up with a few clicks, and supplies you with suggestions like, “Alexa, tell my dash cam to start/stop recording, protect a file, turn on or off” and more. While this is a decent feature I guess, I didn’t find myself using it, since the camera turns on and off automatically.
There is also Enhanced Night Vision. Nextbase says night time recordings will be better on the 622GW since the new sensor used in the dash camera has larger pixels, allowing more light into each one, plus the camera automatically detects light levels and enhances the image as its being recorded.
Super Slow Motion is an upgrade on our previous Dash Cams ability to play in slow motion. Now you can view your 622GW footage in Super Slow Motion at 1080p and 120fps. This feature is ideal to help identify what happens in an incident and capture details such as number plates, vital for proving fault.
Live view is an option for you…
You can have your Nextbase 622GW show you on-screen what’s recording at all times, or you can turn it off if that’s distracting.
Overall, this camera and its 4K video recording is a sweet upgrade from older dash cams. The video footage is clear and provides good detail. The camera itself is compact and doesn’t take up too much space on the windshield. I also like that it has location tracking in case of emergencies.
One of the worst things about this camera is that though the camera is the newest 4K technology, it uses a downright vintage mini USB plug for charging. It would be nice if this would charge with USB-C like so many other new gadgets, but alas…
I also found the camera gets extremely hot during use, but it wasn’t like it was setting anything on fire, so.…
Overall I like the camera and I think if you’re looking for a high resolution camera with lots of useful features, you should definitley consider the Nextbase 622GW.
It sells for about 499CAD and you can get it from Best Buy.

Thanks for this video. Very informative, and went out and bought one to replace my old (10+yrs) BlackVue. I went for the wired rear camera, as i wasn’t convinced the plug in rear view would be up to the job.

Hi Erin. I purchased this 622 today, before i looked at your video. I also purchased the sd card recommended for it. I found your video has very useful information. Only concern is how hot it gets. Anyway i got warranty for 1 year. Is there a rear camera for this ? Would like to see a review of a rear nextbase. God i was nearly going to type netflix.

Thank you for this. I am having screen freezing issues on power up and a black screen once the screen saver is activated. I am using a nextbase memory card. I got straight through to nextbase support on a Sunday morning and a very good chap helped me to reset the system. There was a recent firmware update that did not help. I will be checking the dashcam over the next few days. 🙂☘️🇮🇪
How is the camera holding up with summer temperatures? I live in Moab Utah where it gets quite hot. I park in the shade at home, but sometimes it's unavoidable when out and about. I've just purchased this unit today, and the rear window camera to get full coverage. I'm hoping it's built to handle some heat. I worry as I will wire it in to be running 24/7 non stop. Between card fatigue, and running hot, I'm second guessing the whole venture. I bought a high end 512gb card as well, I'm hoping the investment returns some value for the $ spent. Guess I'll see...

nice video . I am currently reviewing many devices to make a new model purchase .
The way i see it is the footage can void a minimum of two speed camera tickets , it has paid for itself ... in the event of an fatal accident my kids might get some justice or compensation , in the event of a non responsible accident , I wont get screwed by lack of evidence and it might even be witness to help a third party settle a claim .
All this piece of mind and a lot of fun also with things one see’s along the roadtrip .

Great presentation Thankyou. I am looking specifically to be able to capture licence plates, company name or Truck ID# on logging trucks. I am currently working as a Road Marshal for large lumber producers and mostly in the dark monitoring road safety compliance. My previous two dash cams didn’t have the resolution or quality needed to ID a truck.
Is the night vision on this camera capable of doing this?
I think the 4K resolution would certainly make it easier. You definitely want to be zooming into those shots on a laptop though… It’s a bit hard to read fine print when you’re using your smart phone to access the videos.
Does it come with a seperated back window cam?
Is the parking mode surveillance for this any good? Or is there better cameras out there for parking mode?
The product page says the camera has image stabilization but the footage @ 6:58 is very shaky. Is this because suction cup mount was used and was loose as well as Image Stabilization disabled?
Is it maybe because Erin forgets to turn that feature on? FYI, you can't record 4k once the stabilization feature is on.
I’ve have the 622 and 522, both freeze often I guess because of overheating. I have to reset it at least twice a day. Both are less than a month old

I was close to buying the 622GW, but then I saw the reviews for their iOS app, 1.6 our of 5 stars, worst reviews I have ever seen in the app store.
I have very low tolerance for bad software. Do you find that you don't need the app at all?
Meanwhile, I am considering the Garmin 67W, as their iOS app gets 4.7 stars.
Funny that, every app on the App Store for dashcams are terrible. My uncle and I moved away from many brands including Garmin and have used next base for years.
You don’t need the app for your dashcams, no need to be techie when you can just use the SD card...
I just got this camera today buy did not come with suction holder.
How much is the annual SOS Subscription?
Mine froze within 2 hours of use, nothing work until I place it on the a/c vents to cool it off, not what I expected from a $400 camera

The old USB mini connection is very sturdy, much better than the thinner micro version. USB-C would be nice, but the mini USB is just as sturdy, if not moreso.
It does get very hot.
Is it worth getting the 622 over the 522, I'm just your average road user, just don't think I can justify the jump in price

Hi, the camera gets intentionally hot, in order to help prevent condensation from forming on the windscreen and blocking it’s view, during cold weather.

The processing happening to capture 4k is what causes the heat. It takes quite a bit of power to do 4k upfront and 1080 as well for rear cam users. I live in Moab, it get plenty hot here, hoping this isn't an issue. Will see in about a week I suppose. This was one thing I didn't think about to be honest. Buyers remorse, not even an hour later after purchase after reading this comment. 🤣

The example footage shown in this video has what I think is too much camera shake. I watched a different video and it seemed to have the same amount of camera shake. Thanks for making the video. I will not be purchasing one.
