I'm so sorry you have to go through this. People who have never been through this don't understand how harmful this is. Just had a fight with my neighbors who threw a party on their balcony, which is right across mine, which started at 11 o'clock. After telling them several times to turn the volume down, they went inside continued there and at 1 AM they started having extremely loud sex. The woman was not even moaning anymore, it was literal screaming in front of the OPEN window. That was my breaking point and I yelled "BE QUIET" at the top of my lungs out of my window. Some may think that this is funny, but it really is not. In fact it's literal torture. You reach a point where you can't feel safe in your own house anymore, your entire body shakes out of frustration and anger and you feel like you're about to collapse. The worst part is that I've tried talking to them, but they don't speak a word English. Not one single word, so they don't even understand me or even attempt to. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against foreigners, I'm one myself, that'd make no sense. I just want peace during the night in my own house.

We left apartment life 6 months ago after 20 years of renting. It’s the loud music/ bass that gets me . Now in a single family house going through the same thing next door. I honestly think they want attention. People that behave this way want to be acknowledged. They want people to know they exist. Not sure if they’re renters . I’ve broken leases a few times, called the cops and just moved out after lease end . People are miserable. They are miserable and want everyone else to be miserable. It’s weird because sometimes we hear several bangs on the wall closest to their house like you would with an apartment neighbor next door and we’re separated by a wooden fence. They bang on something so hard next door that we can feel and hear the banging . Besides their aggressive dog 🐶 kept outside 24/7 that growls at us in our own backyard and front yard. I had to cope with an horrible family who was way over the concept of 'noisy' and 'annoying': parents were both unemployed and survived through social help. I felt somehow that I had to work to maintain these parasites of the society. I am a boxer and I thought many times I could give the father a lesson but I also knew that I would have had problems with the law and violence is not the right answer anyway outside a ring. I lived in several different apartments for 8 years. Finally a couple of years ago I simply had enough and couldn't deal with it. I found a small house in a nearby city, even though I would now have to pay higher rent, and commute to work. I didn't care, I desperately wanted something quieter. But that didn't happen because I discovered right away that the neighbors were leaving their dogs outside 24/7 and they never did ANYTHING to shut them up! I could hear the barking really loudly inside the house. I initially talked to them politely, nothing changed. Complained to the landlord and called animal control, nothing changed still.
I work in the logging industry and I have some plastic timber faller's wedges I keep around...I discovered that they make a loud "crack" almost as loud as a small caliber gunshot when slammed against the wooden fence. I started doing that every time the barking started, and yelling really loudly and angrily to shut their goddamn dogs up. I kept that up for a couple of weeks and they finally started getting the hint and moved their dogs to the front yard. But then the pieces of crap started going outside themselves and making deliberate noise. Finally they got kicked out by their landlord.
The new neighbors are much quieter overall, but I hear them outside slamming things around unnecessarily loudly, like they are trying to make me aware of their presence or something. Kinda like what you mentioned above. The other neighbors do the same type of crap also. I just don't get it. I've always tried to be really friendly and respectful of people's peace and quiet. But no matter where I live I never have neighbors that treat me the same.

The one and only time I lived in an apartment, it was directly next to someone who blasted loud bass-heavy rap music all day and evening. Not being able to relax and unwind in my own home nearly pushed me to a mental breakdown. Once I realized that neither the police or apartment management were going to do anything about it, I started taking matters into my own hands. I would get up at 3 or 4am and start beating on the shared wall with a hammer for a couple of hours. When it was time for me to leave for work, I would make sure all of my stereo speakers were facing the shared wall, then I would turn on and turn up the loudest and twangiest country and bluegrass music I could find on continuous nonstop loop as a counter to their obnoxious ghetto bass, and let it run for the next 8+ hours nonstop. If you are going to make me miserable, then I’m going out of my way to make you even MORE miserable. I hate all the scumbags in this world who torment other people with their obnoxious ghetto bass, like they think it’s their “right”. People like that make me root for Covid.

Even as I write this it’s 10pm here in London, and in the apartment above me the child is running around and there’s thumbing on my ceiling. I have lived here for 16 years and not heard a sound from numerous tenants over the years. However, just over 18 months ago a new family moved in and since then it’s been noisy. I told the child’s dad a few weeks ago in a polite way to please keep the noise down. He did not say nothing or acknowledge and just walked. The impact for me is I have stopped working from home because sometimes they play music loud and I always hear thumping noises coming from upstairs, it’s then so hard to concentrate on work. I don't know if you're in the US, but walls are notoriously terribly constructed for soundproofing, so people upstairs are typically too loud even when they're doing normal things at normal volumes. The quiet ones are REALLY quiet. I need to run a box fan at night now.

Bless your heart I moved out because of loud upstairs neighbours, it was my very first apartment that I saved for and loved. The people (and I use this term lightly as they're really lesser than that) got worse when I sent letters to ask them to please quiet down. They tried getting in my face when I approached them politely, I'm a taller/bigger guy so that tactic failed, so they cried victim and just shut the door to continue the banging/music. Let's just say I got my vengeance in another way or another, and I'm a very quiet and calm individual myself so I couldn't dream of doing what I did prior. This was non-stop for 8 months and management didn't do anything. We peaceful individuals always become victims to these bullies and you have to get your point across that you won't stand for it because unfortunately, no one but yourself has your back. Like you said, everyone has their breaking point. I pray your peace is settled now.

I moved to a more rural area thinking it would be less loud but it turns out it's worse because there are people who have giant speakers outside their home they can play 24 hrs/day. This is super relatable. I have my own unfair share of inconsiderate neighbors upstairs. They make the last neighbors who vacated their apartment look like the quietest people you've ever known--and believe me, those people were freaking loud (kids hoverboarding on wood floors, high heels thudding into the floor for hours at a time, etc). My father passed away last year, and despite not enjoying the old neighbors like I didn't, he never retaliated and had the patience of a saint. My youngest sister (when she was still living here) and I though, not as much. These new neighbors run what seems like a 24 hour dojo above our heads. They literally do martial arts all day, and the kids have a total disregard for anyone but themselves. The family runs, screams, yells, claps, argue, chase each other, crash into things, slam doors, drop stuff on the floor incessantly, constantly move heavy objects back and forth, loudly train their new dog, blast movies and music and games, blast a noise machine or music that loops over and over at night to help them sleep, sometimes toss stuff off their deck that lands on mine, it never ends. My sister works from home most of the time so one day the noise set her off so much we used a broom to knock on the ceiling and eventually called the property manager about their excessive noise. They talked to our neighbor and he came to our door himself to "apologize" saying he would give his kids iPads or something to keep them quiet for awhile and that they'd probably be quieter once school started back up. Me and my sister temporarily felt bad after that, but ever since then...nope. They're louder than ever before--recently they were blasting jazz music at 5:30 in the morning. Now that it's just myself here, with my hamster and fish, we're waiting for a 1 bedroom apartment to open up so I can get the hell outta Dodge...but so far I'm stuck with these people hearing their every move and second of their life. Maybe he meant nothing by it, but the guy upstairs even had the nerve to say "I don't want you to move, you're the coolest neighbor I've ever had to deal with, I'm gonna have to deal with new neighbors once you do." "Deal" with me? I've been nothing short of patient with these people even when I wanted to grab and bump the broom to the ceiling or call the office on them. The only silver lining is that I get to be equally as loud if I want to...but...thing is, I don't always want to be loud. These people though, it's as if they live on adrenaline and they're allergic to quietude. I can't stand them whatsoever. I'm not the type of person to say no fun allowed, I mean I get it, I was younger once and remember our old downstairs neighbor coming to our door on my 13th birthday to obnoxiously complain about alleged noise we were making and made me cry, just after we had moved in and my grandfather having passed about a week earlier. But these neighbors, they just dial it up from 10 to a thousand in a matter of seconds. They live in their own thin-walled bubble and could obviously care less about those around them. As long as they're happy, that's all that matters. And of course the management of these buildings wall-to-wall carpeted all the ground floor units like mine but couldn't bother with the rest of them. You're supposed to cover your floors with rugs or carpet yourself if you're not on the ground floor as it said in the lease, but these people never bothered to care enough to do so. Honestly...I can't wait to move but I always seem to be surrounded with the loudest neighbors possible so I'm not getting my hopes up very much.

@@lily10598 Thanks for the support, from one fed-up neighbor to another. They're blasting music right now and my Shazam app was actually able to pick it up despite the muffled noise--that's how loud they are. People have no consideration for those around them. Despite the silver lining of being able to be as loud as I want to be myself since they'd have no room to complain, I don't enjoy being a party animal 24/7. Can't get enough just purely quiet time in this place--I honestly thank God that I have my fan, ear plugs, and a sleep mask to get myself to sleep despite their lack of respect for those living under and above them. I currently live in a small house and deal with some occasional noise here and there, but nothing like I used to in apartments. Me and my family live in the countryside, we have the same family of neighbours on both sides of the property.
Since day one, they've been rude, loud and malicious.
Their children often yell several hours during daytime and when i say yell, i mean scream like a pig, blast music during daytime aswell, but then often it goes as long as 5-6 AM.
It's the worst during weekends, holidays, but especially since mid-spring to late-summer.
We've tolerated it for a few years, at the time of writing this, i have once again called the police. The police went over there, the music stopped for a bit and then it continued.
Add to that they also burn trash during the summer, even during night that pollutes. THESE PEOPLE ARE LITERAL DEMONS.
I don't know if there's hope for us, this is a private house and we have a large backyard, so it's not like we can just leave like that.
Every time it happens, i feel i am getting closer to acting out dark thoughts...

I used to live in North Hollywood, Ca. I had 2 new women living next to me and I thought, seems cool but after some time dammm they were horrible. They would make noise at night so since they were not the only ones and I had told the manager so many times I didn't want to bother the manager anymore ( this manager was not doing her job). I posted a note on the door of these 2 women, the note was not bad at all I was just letting them know I couldn't sleep and wake up for work at 5:30 am they got so pissed off a week later they started banging on my wall like monsters I was actually scared and decided not to call the cops because I didn't want any more problems w them. I was so sick of these two different neighbors making noise all the time I decided to finally move. I think moving can be a good choice. I feel better where I am at, it is noisy during the day here where I live now but not during the night time

Thank you LILY, Ur story is soooo similar to mine. Being quiet and patient and not wanting to bother others when you are a quiet tenet. My neighbor has gotten worse since I too complained to my landlord. Even with police involvement. We are going in circles. In my case it's not music, its a parent allowing her kids to jump off furniture and run the hallways as early as 6am and at times as late as 11pm. Somedays, it goes on forever...like I live under a playground. I have felt like you..."why am I going through this" questions? I involved the landlord but he's only concerned about collecting rent. I've documented, ignored, and bought cameras when my neighbor began passive aggressive behavior due to my complaints. It is a nightmare, especially for those just wanting peace and quiet. Their are laws re: The Right to Quiet Enjoyment and A cease and desist letter you can file. However, they are costly. I hope your situation is better... I wanted to thank you for posting. It can become an isolating nightmare when others don't live through it. I just appreciate knowing i'm not alone and thank you for being brave and ending with a positive message.

I have been through this as well. So I know how you feel.
In this block of flats, I was on the first floor. So other than all the other noise that you had to tolerate. I had this as well.
Below me, and one unit to the side was a middle aged lady.
She was a very kind person. But her son was not.
He would come, and knock on her door around 12:30am to 2:30am in the early hours of the morning. This would always wake me up.
He was a male equivalent of a Lady of the Night. He was looking for money for drugs.
After a string of times being woken up. I had enough.
    My balcony overlooked the door.
So the next time he appeared at night, I went out, and glared at him.
After a few minutes he became aware of me. This attracted some gestures from him to go away. Which I did not.
He then told me to F-Off.
I told him that if I had to come down, and have a 'Chat' with him about waking me up at night, I was going to seriously damage his Carcass.
I never saw him after that, and his mother was very grateful.

I do night shift a couple days a week and its actually EASIER to sleep mid day than it is at night due to less noise. Everyone is at work, but you'd assume everyone being asleep would make it quiet at night. You would assume wrong. Of course we have a 10pm-7am "quiet time" that means absolutely nothing. So thats cool.

  • @chrisdeming9287

Sounds like you’ve been putting up with this for a long time and have tried being nice about getting them to stop. Many cities have local noise ordinances. At this point you need to get your local police department involved. The violators can potentially be charged with a misdemeanor. If you live on campus and your college or university has its own police department I would start by filing a complaint with them, and then reach out to local police. I would first lookup the noise ordinance for your city and see what it says. Most cities have one. Keep us in the loop if you decide to pursue this path.

I am a single female who lives on the bottom floor under a family of four people.

Long story short, they moved in during the pandemic. I know their old neighbors was dancing the street when they left. The one male which is a brother, smokes his cigs, leaves butts and throws up in the shared driveway. He’s walking around 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I could somehow deal with that. The family plays loud music, whenever they feel like it. They argue loudly! This week was awful lost 2 nights of precious sleep. Thank goodness I don’t live in the apt building. The manager is trash, all she knows is for me to call the police, which I have.
The worse is it’s been 4 horrible neighbors. I don’t know what to do, I cannot live like this!
I did talk to someone one regarding this, it helped then. I am a senior it’s wearing me down!
