The cool feature they forgot to mention is the "smartkey" feature. within seconds you can key this lock to your current house key, this keeps you from keeping different keys for old and new locks.
The cylinder looks like a standard, low-grade Kwikset unit, which means the electronics can be ignored and the mechanical part can be bypassed as easily as any "dumb" Kwikset lock. Besides, many houses in America have large glass windows or sliding glass doors that can be opened with a brick in 2 seconds.
Good point, I've been trying to get people to understand the importance of eliminating windows from new construction and requiring existing building to remove windows and replacing them with solid walls. Windows are nothing more than an opportunity for criminals to exploit a buildings perimeter. Also, many windows are responsible for heat/cool air loss and the introduction of insects to a structure. Bricks can't go through walls.
commonsense369 In some European countries, e.g., France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, they solved the window security issue with rolling metal shutters. They can be retrofitted to houses, but they work better and look better if the architect designs the house with shutters from the start. The shutters can be locked to the sill at the bottom and slightly raised to spread the slats, which have air slots in them, allowing ventilation of the house when the inner glass window or door is left open. Rolling shutters are typically installed on the ground floor, at the very least, forcing a burglar to use a ladder to gain entry, making him very conspicuous, or used on all floors, securing the house from top to bottom. The shutters have the advantage that one can still enjoy the view through a window or glass door when one is home, but have peace of mind when one is gone.
Hey ***** it auto-locks when you walk away from the door right? If your phone was left in the bedroom; so its not close to the door and then you went outside for a while will it lock? Also, if its locked and you're phone is on the inside, the antenna on the inner section of the lock would be the one communicating with the mobile device, how would you now get back inside when you touch the lock for it to open?
For convenience, they are great. For security, they are terrible. A thief can open the lock with no visible forced entry (and it'll probably still work with your key) in about four seconds.
+800lb Gorilla How are these any more vulnerable than conventional locks? Please, lay it out for me. Give me an example on how these are any less safe than any old deadbolt.
thats because you are programmed to believe red is locked and now you have to accept that red is just a color and doesnt always mean locked or restricted.
True but it comes down to fairly basic ergonomics... The color Red (for many decades) has been clearly associated with STOP! Perhaps the engineers skipped or were asleep during Ergonomics 101?
my family got this for christmas, sometimes it doesn't even pick up my phone or my key fob and i don't bring the actual key with me, so if one of my family members wasn't always home i'd probably be locked outside for 3 hours in the winter. also, the lights on it aren't too bad in the day, but in the night, you might as well have a giant disco ball on your head looool, its a good product, just needs a few tweaks. i also have the only iphone in my house so my family cant even use the app haha
I would worry about the elements damaging the internals. For now i would only use it on bedroom doors and the like. Of course for the price you can for the standard lock. However in the future i can see this replacing the onld standard key n lock.
Good idea but some more functions wouldn't hurt. The $219 is too much for what it does. I bought Schlage lock with motorized deadbolt for $199 and it has so many options this lock does not. Not bad but for what it does $99 would be fair price.
Is it comparable with Samsung Smart Things so you can use it remotely, not just close by? How about multiple locks to your house can they be synced so I don't need to carry multiple key fobs with me? You said the manual key can be reset. Thanks.
It can still be picked. It can also more than likely be shocked to death as to not notify that the lock has been opened. Probably has no security pinning either. Not worth 219.
great idea. I have been waiting for someone to invent a door lock that opens with a key fob,. yeah, I am still holding on to old school tech. not keyless ignition or smart phones just yet. I wonder if you will get an alert if your door has been kicked in.
Cell phones are prone to screen damage or getting lost/stolen (much more so than keys or locks w/keypads). So what happens in the event your smart gets damaged or lost/stolen?
Considering its actually locking and unlocking ur door without any manual process, is it quiet? In other words, if u want multiple locks for different doors around your home, does it have the ability to be silent to be left unheard art night? Even if it for a door that leads directly to a bedroom?
The only downside is that can be open within a few minutes with simple tools. If you put a flat head screwdriver into it and turn it with a wrench it will turn and unlock very easily.
One of those things that if it became really popular will lead to hackers being able to waltz into your house. The whole damned world doesn't need to be operated from your damned smart phone. Some things should really stay non-digital.
Yep. And you can see that with computers now too. People often think that Apple computers can't get viruses, but hackers don't make viruses for Macs because they hold much less of the market share.
Hacker hacking this lock to gain entry vs. a regular thief who will smash and grab. Either way, a lock isn't really going to stop anyone who wants to gain entry. Look at the big picture.
Adrian Bartholomew Silly stupid analogy. Without the internet I would not have 100 of contacts, so no need to send out hundreds of envelopes. Besides, because I embrace e-mails I have to embrace this unecesary piece of shit?
+knwr Yeah, he was a bit dumb with that one. But he's got a point right, if you have an expensive looking lock it's like having an expensive looking car on your drive way. Makes people consider your house as a target more. They're defs not going to be ripping the lock off though.
I found biggest flaw with Kevo - Its blutooth within 20 feet, even from outside the door, lets say you are in the car about to reverse, anyone can touch from outside to open. Whats the point having the touch lock open if someone can open outside the door you don't even know someone got in? Also there is no way to lock remotely using wifi, to have better control of monitoring. Like the RING Video we can monitor even we are miles away from home!!!
SLRxCATFiSH Battery, you know how he went inside above that light that flashed green you can take that oddly big covering off and there's your battery at least on mine..
Quickset is like Master Locks they are the easiest locks to open ....the lock that you are showing has bad eternal parts that it can be opened with a dumb for tool or screwdriver in less then 30 seconds. Mostly plastic parts inside. But it's pretty.........🔒
"What happens if I lose my phone? Simply log into the Kevo mobile app on another smartphone or into the Kevo web portal and disable or delete your phone. You will need to use your Kevo fob or a standard key to unlock the door until you retrieve or replace your phone."
As opposed to the safer times when someone couldn't steal my keys? At least I'm more aware if I loose my phone compared to my keys and my phone can be located if I loose it with GPS.
Ok folks, I have one suggestion for all. get a cop to do a home security assessment. Here are some basics I pass on to all who ask. 1) On ALL doors leading to outside including entry from a garage, have (2) deadbolt style locks on the door giving access to the interior, with one of them needing a key to get IN or OUT. Keep the key in a hidden place near the door on the interior side, but not visible and show all family members where it is and can be used to exit the house in a fire or other emergency. This traps a burglar to exit the home with his loot should he be fortunate to get in. This may mean to carry 3 or more keys, but it reduces the likelihood of a burglar to get his loot out and limits it to what he can carry through the window. 2) Replace ALL screws that hold door hinges onto the frame of the doorway for all doors leading to the outside. All hinges should be held in by 3" or longer screws. The little screws that come with most hinge sets are too short and allow the door to be easily kicked in, the longer screws get into the door frame 2x4's and not just the flashing. Striker plates and any other reinforcement devices for strikers and the frame need to be installed. This keeps the wood from splintering by blunt force impact or kick in attempts. Check your local hardware store's home security area to get an idea on how to install these reinforcements.
Thanks for thinking of us but your suggestions are out dated do to technology. For example - Cary 3 keys? You can use 3 different smart keys instead = caring zero keys as u use your smartphone for all Which brings me to the next example - almost all theft today is of electronics that can fit in your backpack or pockets so locking him inside (where he can trach your home!) and then leave from a window isn't smart as he will still leave with everything he intended to leave with threw the door (he wasn't going to steal your washing machine and carry it on it's back right)
Right! These locks as well as most other locks are simple convenience locking devices. They have absolutely little to do with structural fortification... it's unfortunate so many people put so much trust and money into a lock and completely ignore the structure of the door or the structural integrity surrounding the door ;)
Yeah but criminals typically don't want to make a lot of noise or cause a lot of damage. They look for easy opportunity and convenience. If you want to break into my dead-bolted closet door you would have to use a crow bar and a lot of effort and break the door jam all to hell if you can't open the lock.
Hackers can easily find a way to hack this and this would be a really bad idea, they should just do it like those new car doors where if ur near it unlocks the door for you.
200 comments and no one has yet observed that it seems the $220 feature of convenience is only in unlocking the deadbolt. It's not smart enough to lock it by touch if it's unlocked?!
0:23 - I bet soon enough there will be free blue tooth apps on-line for free entrance of any cell phone owner to any door. The Bluetooth is insecure feature, which can be hacked easily.
Dang, you could have at least installed it straight (2:55). The biggest reason I'm not going for this is because the inside mechanism is massive and ugly.
I'm not saying this is a good idea, or that it's secure, but why do people keep asking "what if your phone gets stolen"? Isn't it exactly the same as if your keys get stolen? And ffs if your phone dies or you misplace it, you still have a set of keys.
It really pisses me off to know that there are still some companies that only develop their apps for Apple. The iPhone isn't that superior over other phones. I like my Galaxy S4 way better than the iPhone.
***** The only thing more obnoxious than the word "sheeple", is the people who use it. I used nothing but android phones for four years before making the switch to Apple. I will NEVER go back to droid.
Well nothing is going to change sorry to say. Apps generally work better on iOS because it is easier to program for fewer devices. The irony of people calling people who make decisions don't agree with their propaganda sheep.
Just like Monsieur Ouya it's easier and better! I had android for years also and switched to iPhone and will never go back. Big gigantic screens are just dumb, get glasses if your blind ass can't see!! And who uses stylus' anymore?! Why not bring Treo's too. Plus Android phones don't have the required Bluetooth and simple (but still advance) soft/hardware.
***** Lots of Android devices have had Bluetooth 4.0 compatibility for ages - the Nexus 4 (which came out around a year before this video, mind you) had hardware compatibility and got the software layer when Android 4.3 (I think, might be ~4.2) came out. Other flagship Android devices have it too, only some of the lower end devices won't these days.
Dollardave is right. I'm a locksmith. A screwdriver and a pair of pliers is all it takes. Smart locks internal parts are week at best. Put the flat head in the key way, and use the pliers to rock back and forth until key cylinder gives way. Takes less time than it takes to find your keys. Very crappy system, and people need to know. Kwikset knows... They just hope you don't. If I had one, I would replace the lock cylinder somehow to make it more secure. But absolutely don't put any smart lock from kwikset on anything you value.
Bottom locks offer no security, they are just to keep the wind from blowing it open. Most newer construction just puts non locking doorknobs so people will use their deadbolts because they are the security. Also cuts cost putting plain knob instead, but primarily makes the deadbolt be used to secure. Can't open a deadbolt in 2 seconds with a EBT or Credit card.
SOLUTION: They should give out small dongles that you have to attach to your keyring and then have the lock open the door automatically when you walk up to it... Kind of like when you walk up to a modern car it automatically unlocks so you can just open the door without having to press unlock. Same thing for leaving. And it wouldn't be some shitty safety hazard like this because normally if a thief steals yours keys it would already include a home key.
The cool feature they forgot to mention is the "smartkey" feature. within seconds you can key this lock to your current house key, this keeps you from keeping different keys for old and new locks.

I've seen this adapted for Hotel use. Super handy and cuts down on waste using the magnetic, plastic keys that you usually get.

A simple stack overflow attack later and im in. Thanks bluetooth stacks
What about when the power is out? Do I have to carry a physical key all the time? Seems like that should be in the review.
I have a kevo lock! It is a very good lock! If you have any questions if be glad to answer them! They are very handy and my younger brothers love it!

you should update this review, they've added many of the features you mentioned are missing
A simple propane torch (the kind used for copper pipes) should provide a quick way in.
I read some of the reviews that it kept freezing up and not opening or it would unlock for no apparent reason when your in your house.

cool. still has a keyway and kwiksets are very easy to pick. no security here....just convenient
I can pick both of my locks in under a minute...it made me rethink everything..

John Jones how is talking about smartlock gay?
He picks both ways.
Absolutely great for people who have in map/navigation apps their home saved...

Seems like 100% safe :D
Do they come in Schlage or Kwikset thats not a smartkey??
Thx for the info , we are from the resistance
Dupree what if your phone is inside and u are outside then what do u do. And does it have fingerprint scan
Since this lock costs so much its basically an advertisement on your house that you can afford an expensive lock.
I think it's better if there was a lock that just scans for your fingerprint and lets you in.
it's a nice idea, but i wouldn't like using it for my front door. maybe a room inside my house or something though.
Does it work off phone name or mac address? Phone name would be really insecure.
it is a lock that I can defete in two minutes with a cordless drill......good use of $219?
You can't even spell though...
r/iamverysmart
What if you are upstairs and above the front door? Does it still know you are inside?
As opposed to the safer times when someone couldn't steal my keys? At least I'm more aware if I loose my phone compared to my keys and my phone can be located if I loose it with GPS.
They should've had a tap code to unlock if u don't have a key or phone

Sweet, now not only can a lock be picked, but hacked as well.
so the dead bolt is keyless but I will still need a key to unlock bottom lock. Not a good deal to me.
Exactly
I trust card lock door system it is convenient!!
How about the smart lock with 4 access modes? Fingerprint, password, card, and a back-up key?
Just so the guy with your phone can also get your charger
What's the name of the song at the beginning?
What happens if someone steals your phone and walks up to your front door?
Who cares? A thief can open this lock in about four seconds with a dumb key and a pair of pliers. They are total junk.
Exactly or if you loose it or no battery?
Welcome stranger!
So, the lock had become loose? Then, tighten it.
