Great episode of She Runs, She Paints (hat tip to Chariots of Fire)...loved the conker painting, shadow might be nice, I'm sure you can pull it off, but it's perfect as is. I really appreciate you sharing how much time each painting takes...makes me feel a bit more relaxed about how long mine take. The history of the golf ban was a bit shocking, though I don't know why any of human history shocks me any more! 😊Thanks for another great video, and got my Jack Spaniels weekly fix, too ✌🏼
Thanks Colleen! So glad you liked it. I was so undecided about the shadow - I usually really like doing them, but in the photo it’s really big (because of the low autumn sun) that it would put the composition off balance. Doh! 🤦♀️
When I saw that huge area of sandy beach for Jack to run around, all I could think was that someone might have to be carried back to the car. Great exercise for all 😀🌻🐕🥰🇺🇸
i love St Andrews! I just watched The Open there this season. They announced that the course is open to visitors on Sundays. Great walk and painting, Sarah! love jack ❤
My grandmother used to say that my eyes were darker than a horse chestnut. I still have a couple she gave me years ago. Lovely beach run with Jack and walk through the quaint village. A shadow always adds to a picture to me, but it is beautiful as it is. Thanks Sarah, Willie and Jack!
Thanks Debbie! I’m so torn, as I think the painting kind of needs the shadow, but I also don’t want to ruin the composition 🤦♀️ That’s a lovely memory about the horse chestnuts - I’ve always thought their colour is so beautiful 😍
I remember when I was wee my dad would take me to the woods where there was loads of horse chestnut trees, and we'd spend ages collecting them, and throwing twigs into trees to knock them off. I also did with my son when he was wee, so they bring back good memories for me. I even brought some back from a walk the other day....god knows why 🤣 Those ruins, and the old tombstones looked gorgeous, St Andrew's is steeped in history! That beach also looked amazing, it was probably a dream come true for jack - a never ending horizon of sand and water! I loved your painting, shiny smooth conkers are just so pleasing, and a nice contrast to the jaggy outer layer, you captured the conker beautifully. Thank you for another beautiful video. 🤗
Again, thank you for taking us along on the tour of St. Andrews. Chariots of FIre was one of my favorites. Horse Chestnuts are a really nice contrast between satin finish and shinny. The shinny Conker looks like it could be picked up off the shell. Beautiful job on a common autumn treat.
Great tour of St.Andrews. The beach looked really chilly...brr! I never saw the movie, but the beach scene is iconic.---My Paternal Grandparents had a horse chestnut tree on their North Dakota farm. We opened one but never paid attention to them after that...but the hammock attached to the chestnut and batchelder trees DID!
Haha! Thanks Alana - so glad you liked the tour 😊 It was pretty chilly on this walk - warm in the sun though. There were people swimming below the castle, but I like being warm too much to do that haha 🤣
What an awesome video. I am a Canadian however, I have been to St. Andrew and really enjoyed my time there. I also spent a few days on the Isle of Skye. Thank you for sharing,
St. Andrews is spectacular! Such views. When we came to live in England my sons were four and six, they were fascinated with Conkers! We didn’t have them where we came from.
Thank you for the walk. The town is beautiful. I love fall colors and sights but I don’t like being cold. My family heritage is from the lowlands but I always related to the highlands. Thank you.
Very nice!!! Loved the walk around the St Andrews. What wonderful magical place! The history is amazing. It’s hard to think that time just marched on through all the generations as time passes now. Wonder what will be said about us in the future! I’m sure you and Willie had a beautiful day together while you made your video. I enjoyed being along for the adventure and I loved the painting! Thank you for making my day better in so many ways!!!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked it 😊 It is amazing to walk through these historic places that are still in use today. So much that must have happened beneath our feet…
Conkers always look amazingly rich and warm and you've really captured that in this painting! I'd say a faint, pale blue shadow would look great as a cool contrast!
What a gorgeous historical University!! And as always wonderful video.. Fell asleep last night watching and Willies guitar which is lovely.. You have inspired me to get out my paints and get some supplies.. Thank you Sarah!❤
Sarah, You are absolutely correct about creating your own Black, there are so many shades of "black", that using a BLACK pigment reminds me of painting by numbers, mixing is Verboten:) I sold all kinds of are materials as well as picture framing and painting. People often asked for a color chart to mix secondary colors, when all they needed to know was that a secondary of any of the three primaries was the one left over after mixing the other two. Your skills are so evident, you must have had an excellent Art education enhancing your natural gifts. Cheers, Rik Spector
Gosh I remember playing conker as a kid, before I left for Australia. The painting is awesome and you captured the conker in the shell perfectly. st Andrews is a beautiful beautiful place. Take care and thank you for sharing 🙏👍❤️
I really enjoyed watching you paint the image of the conker. When I was in my teens, longer ago than I care to admit, we lived in Ohio, USA and had a horse chestnut tree in our side yard. We called it a buckeye, the state tree of Ohio. My brothers and I would throw them at each other. Maybe that's how they got the name "conkers". That's the sound they made if you got hit in the head.
It’s such a good word - I think everyone needs it. Autumnal always makes me think of cosy clothes and comforting hot drinks after a nice cold crisp walk 😊
Another great video! Just to answer your question about the use of the word fall instead of autumn or autumnal. Here, in Massachusetts at least, we use both fall and autumn. Fall is just a more casual term. Not sure how it is used in other states. Thanks again for the wonderful virtual tours of your country and for allowing us to see your creative process!
Sarah, When it comes to Golf, I'm a "Gofer"... I go fer the beach not the greens:) The House Sparrows were introduce here many years ago and can be found everywhere. These "Weaver Finches" look at their bills, have almost taken over our back yard feeders ,at times. They are attractive but pests, but they will not go away. Starlings are another bird ,introduced by a Shakespeare lover, who thought America needed romantic species from His writings. They have also spread across the continent and caused a great deal of damage. It's our', not their fault, but they and others are Pandora's boxes, once opened never to be closed. C'Est La Vie:( Cheers, Rik
I did not know that you have Buckeyes (horse chestnuts) over there. It is supposed to bring you good luck to carry one in your pocket. We have hedge apples (also called orange oak, bow tree, and other names) here. They are supposed to keep spiders and snakes away if you put them under your house. You can't eat a hedge apple. They are green on the outside, there is no fruit or nut inside, they are hard, and bigger than a soft ball. Do you have hedge apples over there? Your painting is beautiful. Jack had a wonderful time, as you both did. It was a perfect day to go for a long walk and visit many interesting spots. Everything looks so beautiful in your videos.
We in America don’t usually say “autumnal,” although I use it a lot, I live that word. And you’re right , we more often say “fall-like,” but I l still prefer “autumnal.”
Nice to see Jack out with you again. He does love the beach there. I didn't realize how many castles there are over there. Oh those gelato ice creams looks so good. I was just thinking I wouldn't mind trying the sea salt chocolate. How was it? The painting came out great. I think it looks fine without the shadow. Thank you for the adventure.
Thanks Sally! It was lovely having Jack back again - we miss him when he isn’t here with us! The ice cream was lovely - I was glad of my choice. The chocolate was not too salty and the maple one was very seasonal. Scotland has so many castles! It was a very divisive place through history so everyone wanted to defend themselves!
"Pupatron" 🥰 too cute While most Americans say fall instead of autumn, we do still say autumnal. Maybe because fall-al just doesn't work! 😂 Another word difference, possibly regional in the US, is that we always called conkers "buckeyes". My grandfather used to carry a lucky one around in his pocket.
In my part of the US, we use both autumnal and fall-like, but fall-like is more common and casual. I am from Ohio, where the Buckeye (another faux chestnut) is our state university's mascot.
Oh wow sooooooo hilarious, that rock sign for weather 😂😂 I call it "fall like", but I kinda like the word "autumnal". Was looking out the window yesterday and told my son the trees were outside getting naked LOL. (Leaves falling haha!) Blueberry cheesecake or pineapple cheesecake would've been my choice for ice cream! Love hearing about the UK's history through your videos. Stay warm!!
The castle and cathedral look amazing, I could roam around there for ages looking at all the old stonework and the headstones too. I don't think your painting needs a shadow, it sits nicely on the page in my opinion
A Royal what date?!! 😂 Another beautiful location, I really must come to Scotland because I'm missing out. I am so glad you filmed the Sparrows or 'Spuggies' as we used to call them in Yorkshire, they are beautiful little birds but so underrated. Your painting is beautiful as always and I love the different descriptions of Jack in the credits each week, so funny 😃💗 x .....(Butts Wynd 😂)
🤣 Oh no!! A tiny wee typo there - well done for catching it. Apparently both me and Willie managed to miss that (he checks my video once I’m finished editing). And what a typo 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ I’m pretty sure Prince William just took Kate out for a coffee and didn’t use his fists at all 😳
Ooh interesting - I wonder why that is the name. To be honest, I don’t even know where the word conker comes from - maybe the noise when they clunk together..?!
@@shewalksshepaints Here's what I found online: "The name stems from Native Americans, who called the nut "hetuck," which means "buck eye" (because the markings on the nut resemble the eye of a deer)."
