It's a good joke. Edit: oh, you KNEW. Of course you knew. Obviously. I'm not the only one with a seven year memory.
Good vid! I'll always remember this one moment I had when I was starting to get into Xrd, where I joined a casual learning lobby stream from a player who primarily played SF. His major comment after playing me for awhile was that I really needed to work on anti-airing. This was totally true in a vacuum, as I had bad anti-air reactions, but his comment about it was something along the lines of "As soon as you see me jump you should be hitting that anti-air". And as someone coming over from Blazblue it just left me very confused. "Every time? Don't I have to confirm you're actually coming in first? How can he be so confident?" I largely disregarded that little bit and just worked on general reaction time and comfort with my moves etc. It wasn't until early this year when giving GBVS a try that I finally got the full understanding of why he would say that as a gut reaction. It was the first time I had played a 2D fighter without double jumps or air-blocking, and suddenly his SF based response of "If you aren't anti-airing immediately that's just a reaction problem" came full circle and made a ton of sense, because that old comment was now dead on.

My favorite jumping mechanic is in Outer Wilds. It's a tiny little thing that doesn't matter too much because you're mostly using your jetpack (which is another thing, the full "your player is a physics object, 6DOF movement" thing adds a lot of nuance), but when you jump, you _hold_ the jump button to _bend your legs_ , then jump when you _release_ the jump button. This mirrors how you actually jump IRL and is a nice way to allow fine control over jump height (or really, in this case, jump impulse because physics object) while maintaining the physics aspect by not applying magic forces on you depending on how long you hold the button in the air after jumping like other games do.
Now I kinda wanna see you cover the Touhou fighting games specifically the ones after Hopeless Masquerade since they tale place in the air and you can "jump" downwards I'd love to see what you'd have to say about it
22:36 Tager is my favourite grappler in fighting games because of the way he counteracts his extremely limited movement, in a game where movement is as free form as ever, with many character able to whiff punish you into a full combo from full screen. His movement is pathetic, but the way he attempts to make up for that is with his special gimmick: magnetism. When you get hit by one of Tager's drive moves, you become magnetised for a set period of time. This will cause certain attacks of Tager's to pull you in towards him. These attacks being all his drive moves AAAAAAAND... his command grabs :))))) Block a full screen projectile? You better be careful with your run in or you might just be sucked straight into his invuln command grab. You're magnetised and have the gawl to jump? Well he can jump too, and guess what, he has a command grab in the air that he can suck you right into. This magnetism also allows him to do some extremely unique and crazy resets (check out MoustachedVillain if you want to see the best Tager has to offer). It's such a unique and interesting take on a grappler, and I absolutely love it. (I wish he were better, but tier list discussion is another thing and grapplers always suck anyway lol)
Tager has air dash though in JC... Jokes aside, I also find Tager's design to be really interesting and wish he was more viable. After playing GG for the first time recently, I really think he needs either a move similar to Slide Head or maybe a C version of Sledgehammer that actually blocks other things than just projectiles.
@@HasekuraIsuna well he already has B sledge, which has armour against all moves. However, it's caveat is that he can still be hit low, like many other armoured moves. Tager's biggest issues are his poor movement, neutral, and defensive options. Against most of the cast, it can be extremely difficult for him to get his gameplan going, and it's very easy to steamroll Tager into the corner and kill him without ever giving him a chance to retaliate. However, in true grappler fashion, once he gets a hit in, the tables can turn very quickly. Sadly, his tools to squeeze that hit out aren't very difficult to shut down, making him a pretty all around terrible character.
@@skivvac Oh, you're right, B sledge actually takes High and Mids nowadays. As I remember it it was only projectiles it blocked. My bad. I think a move like Slide Head, that knocks opponent down if they are on the ground allowing for a single safe super jump to close the distance, would be a way to increase his way of getting closer, without giving him more movement per se. Seeing as both defensive system mechanics in Burst and CA puts him in a bad spot compared to rest of the cast, giving him something like that would hurt I think.
@@HasekuraIsuna I'm not sure if Pot's moves would exactly patch the holes in Tager's character. For one, the move you just suggested wouldn't function very well in a BlazBlue context. Not only is the arena wider, making it impossible to close the gap with one super jump forward from full screen, but BlazBlue favours being airborne a lot more than Gear does due to barrier being very low cost and allowing you to block everything in the air. For many of Tager's absolute pain matchups, such as Amane or Izanami, I doubt this would help very much if at all. If I could give Tager one thing to make him better, I'd start with a better dedicated anti air. At present, his anti air options are pretty pathetic. He has 2C, which is an EXTREMELY slow anti air, even for a 2C, and has its head invuln kick in extremely late, making it very difficult to reliably reaction anti air people, and often just downright impossible. His other grounded anti air options are 2A and atomic collider. 2A is his best option against an IADing opponent or the like, and it actually functions all right, but isn't very much help against opponents coming in from directly above or at an angle, as the hitbox is quite small and it lacks any head invuln. Also, the reward you get off of it is pretty measly. As for atomic collider, this is more of a read/space control anti air, and is essentially useless without magnetism, making it less of a dedicated anti air and more of a gimmick. Outside of all this, basically all he's got is air to airs, with his j.A, j.B, or air command grab, but this lacks any invuln and is again pretty much useless without magnetism. Making Tager's 2C faster, or at least have faster head invuln, would go a long way to making him better. Jumping in on Tager is a difficult thing for him to deal with, and giving him better options to defend against this would go a long way I think.
@@skivvac You seem much more knowledgeble than me, so you are probably right! Now that you say it, players seem to get a lot of "free" jump-ins on Tager, which should be punishable, but doesn't seem to be. I guess the devs reasoned that instead of making 2C have proper invulnerability or speed, the fact that you can combo of it even if you trade with a air normal should make up for it...
I know we were sticking to universal mechanics mostly but Under Night has some really cool aerial control for the characters it wants to have and adds very unique dynamic to it. Your videos, Core-A and ThoeryFighter's videos have inspired me to try Fighting games again. I've always loved the idea of these games (watch competitions from time to time and know the general lingo and top players) but execution was too hard for me to stick with it. I got Street Fighter V a week ago and I'm comfortably duking it out with other Bronze scrubs, improving bit by bit feels really good. Guilty Gear's aesthetics always intrigued me so I hope Strive's release and lobby system will be good enough for new players like me to find matches. Anyways, I've been rambling. Thanks for the entertaining videos Leon, and to a good 2021!

Nanase having a float force function adds so much to think about both on offense and defense I love it.
Great vid as always
1:55 "... and creating a sense of player freedom *rAther* than restriction." Puberty is pretty funny
Joke aside, really good video, man!
bruh this is some core A gaming content quality *chefs kiss* your channel will blow up even more i can tell.
Ah yes, just the video I needed
The fact that you mentioned Rivals in this video makes me irrationally happy, lol. Definitely the best platform fighter I’ve played
Check out Adam Carra's channel if you haven't for some great Rivals / platform fighter analysis!
(Also his Doom videos have been solid too)
@@bb010g oh, he’s my favorite Adam Carra!
Binge watching this channel is “why guilty gear made me throw my life away: the movie”
omg I havent thought about ozma in years. gonna listen to them as soon as the vid ends ty for putting them in the intro
I dont know why, but I came here fully expecting a breakdown on weekly Shonen Jump's manga story arcs. I'm not very bright, huh?
Considering the Thumbnail
Well, maybe you are
I love the variety you have in your game footage. I never expect to see stuff like Blade Strangers anywhere.
I'm a simple man: I see an upload notification for Leon Massey, I click.
Seriously, good stuff, dude.
Fighting game analysis and strategy is a whole SCIENCE now. My tiny brain is happy sticking to button mashing, but I still appreciate the hell out of these videos.
"Fuck Jack-O players."
Thanks, Bob! You always know what to say.
Best and most in-depth fighting game video I've seen in this entire fucking year.
Great job and instant subscription
damn and here i was waiting for him to talk about Centralfiction and extend the video for 20 minutes
This is the best video on youtube. I've rewatched it an embarrassing amount of times and each visit leaves me more satisfied than the last. Excellent fucking job.
Bro I love ur videos dude there like core a gaming vids but funnier
Love your content dude. You make some of the most thoughtful and fun pieces for us in the FGC. Thanks man.
I feel like you just make these videos as an excuse to dump on Jack-O.
Never waste a good opportunity.
Somewhere at some point, your videos appreciating the minute details of fighting games is making a developper feel warm inside.
"Position for an an-'ee-air in this figh-'ing game."
discovering the movement in different fighting games is so much fun, when i look for old and new fighting games i only stay in those that have satisfying movement, or charactets that have satisfying movement
conclusion: Just play Melty Blood
CC CASTER WON'T FUCKING WORK

When they delete Reverse Beat. I mean, I don't mind Melty Blood and there's the CHESTO MANLY GRABS MAN who is pretty much the only grappler I've ever found enjoyable to play. But Reverse Beats are annoying. Me no like. Also, I think I've found him fun, because usually I have more ways to crack open someone pressing 4. Not in MB. I dunno, man, it just doesn't click.
i just saw a half hour video essay on jumping in games in my reccommended. my interest is immeasurable, lets see where this goes
2 years late but, OZMA SPOTTED
this was so fun to watch!! your videos are always a blast.. i hope you have a great rest of 2020, and even beyond!!
meanwhile me trying to play aerial fighters: have you considered UPSIDE DOWN JUMP?
Love the video. Also love the choice of music! Tessie's theme at the end was really nice!
7:06 this is why 5D chess is more interesting than normal chess at least to me. Easier to make mistakes because the game's relatively new and that timeline didn't exist a move ago why am I in check simultaneously across dimensions?
You might like crazyhouse or 960
@@tongpoo8985 I was thinking fog of war chess or King Fu chess... It might be interesting if there was a fog of war Kung Fu chess variant as well. If I wanted crazy house, I could learn shogi
@@DoomRater never heard of kung fu chess. Shogi is pretty cool but sort of hard to get into if you're not japanese.

You really have been my newest favourite fighting game RUclipsr you really bring a lot of insight in your videos i really enjoy your style. Keep up the good work
We need more time to talk about guilty gear, especially on why its the best game ever

Agreed
No, sorry. That title goes to Garfield Kart.
Skullgirls for me, if I can’t play Peacock in another fighting game it’s not worth my time
@@graysonwells21 can you capture a snake at the start of the game give it a name love it for life and then throw it a guard's head as a legit non-lethal run strategy? Metal Gear Solid 3, take it or leave it
I’m really impressed how smoothly you transition between talking about games. Great video.
Can't wait for the followup video on crouching. :)

Mario: * breaks glass bottle *
He was talking about Megaman's movement. Not Mario's
Thanks for the entertaining videos Leon, and to a good 2021!
i would say that you forgot about Answer and the way his scrolls define his air game, but honestly i think even arcsys forgot about him
He didn’t really forget, quite a few GG characters have weird air game. Millia has double actions in air, Zato flies, Potemkin becomes an ICBM, Answer sets teleportations points, Faust flies (swims?). He just was using a few instances to demonstrate an overall concept.
Bang shishigami had it first. Arc just imported his mechanic into GG in the form of Answer
@@seokkyunhong8812 bang walked so answer could run
Dude this is like, the best video I've seen on youtube. It feels like the kind of rant I'd randomly pop off on with my family and they'd just get annoyed and ignore me, but actually well spoken and shown. It's talks like these that get me to continue to love video games as a whole. No right or wrong just different and weird, and how so much of it is discovered and not always created. Very very good video.

Shoutouts to my boy in GGX Advance, Airdashing Potemkin
My favorite Guilty Gear salesmen is back with a new video!

Your in-depth analyses make me very happy. Look forward to seeing what else you have coming in 2021.
Justice is like reverse Potemkin. She's a slow tank that wants to zone despite having some damaging combos if she hits you right.

What about neco arcs?
A simple answer: Burenyu.
This is probably my forth time watching this video. I think it's safe to say it's one of my favorite video essays ever. Video on walking forward in fighting games when Leon I need more of this shit please
