I love it, that one maybe I could use because I absolutely HATE the smell of vinegar. I know you can wash and wipe it off but sometimes some of the vinegar smell remains
Probably the best hamster cage cleaning video I've seen. You addresed so many things I've never thought of before! I've stumbled across your videos before, but this one got me hooked! Going to be binge watching for the night. 🐹❤
Some people say, “you don’t need a big cage, because they have a wheel to run on.” This is far from the truth. Imagine living in your closet for your entire life, but inside of your closet is a treadmill that is most likely too small to comfortably on. Yes, you can run, but you will still go crazy bro cooped up in a closet.
Nooo! Don't be mean and leave us on a cliffhanger :( This is the first video of yours that I've watched for a while. I loved that you said why you do a full cleanout of Iodine's cage when you feel like it's dirty but encouraged new hamster owners to put it in their planner :). It was also great that you explained why you use those pellets instead of other types of more common substrate for your hamster and included how thick it should be.
I wish wish wishhh you’d do a colab with Victoria Raechal! Two fantastic humans who have changed hundreds of thousands of loving owners take better care of their floofs, thankyou for all that you do xo
I cant wait till I'm old enough to move away and make huge hamster cages and get more pets!!! My hamster doesn't have a very big cage but its big enough though! I love Iodine cage its too cute to be true! :) :)
Hi Erin I love you!!!! Your videos gave me so much knowledge about hamsters so my parent let me get 2!! Robos and I also made the Billy xl !!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️I love you
I don't know why I watch these like you are cleaning a cage I can do that as well but when ever you post one of these I always watch them all the way through!!?
I got m_ hamster about couple months ago and she still not that tame. I have to cages connected together. Yes ik i could make my own with like a clear tub but didnt know before i bought them but any suggestions.
I find your channel very helpful as a pet owner I use an aspen paper mix but I got a hold of some hemp bedding do you have any opinions on it and maybe a wise opinion or two much appreciated if I can get some kind of reply great videos👍
I love cage cleanout videos and I can't wait for your autumn cage tour! By the way is vodka the same thing as rubbing alcohol? So basically you can use a mixture of vodka and water to clean your cages? Just curious. Also what homemade cleaning detergents can be used to clean hamster cages besides water and vinegar solution?
Yes rubbing alcohol can be used to clean. I'm not sure about other homemade cleaners though I've only ever used vinegar, vodka and commercial cleaners :)
Please do more videos about your mouse, I have 5 mice that all live together and my sister has six that live in two separate cage due to one of the mouses dominance. I’d love to see more mice related videos 😅
My mom is giving me a hard time about getting the ikea detolf as a cage be cause it’s not “secure enough”. Is there any recommendations on how to secure the cage FULLY so the little Hammy won’t get out. I thought of magnets but I wanted other opinions
I think I mentioned this in the video but Iodine was very sensitive when it came to substrates and had suffered allergic reactions to some in the past (which caused her fur to fall out). Pellets were the safest option for her. You can't buy commercial paper bedding here and while I do make my own home made paper substrate for decorative purposes, it would take weeks to make enough to fill the entire cage and just wasn't a plausible option :)
I hope u read this Erin.... My local pet store keeps dogs in sour of a glass crate and their cats are kept in tiny glass boxes with VERRY few air holes like litterarly just two. Their hamsters are all Syrians and they keep all of their young hamsters together and all of their old hamsters together only one watter bottle in the extremely over stoked hamster cages and the mice are all live and are supposed to be snake food so ya they don't sell frozen or pre killed and also their iguanas omg don't even get me started the way they are so over stalked. Their small birds and parrots are in tiny glass boxes and u can't walk by a bird that is not showing a sick symptom, it is just not possible for their small birds their. But for the big birds they are kept in tiny cages. Accept for the Maccaw, I was impressed. Non of their birds have toys witch is so important for various reasons. Their fish are over stalked and u probably understand what I mean by them putting turtles in bad conditions.the pet store imployees don't educate ppl on the commitment they are about to take when they get a pet. Their tortoises are tiny and they don't tell ppl how big they are gonna get. Neither hamsters or mice have weeks. All of their hamster cages are critter trails witch gives a bad example for parents. They do sell bird toys ut they don't make it look nessesary bcz they don't use any. They don't even sell wheels. Their pet food is so low quality. This pet store has their bunnies in tiny glass boxes with two air holes and are SO OVERSTALKED with no hay or any place to hide. Overall, this pet store doese not give their pets a good life and give bad examples for non educated ppl who want to buy. Pet and they don't sell the maguratty of what ur pet needs so be thankful for the way ur pet store cares for their animals
This pretty much describes 99% of the pet shops in Cyprus, it's best to avoid shopping in places like this as that just supports their practices and encourages them not to make any changes. Finding a good shop can be really hard (trust me, I had to really go out of my way just to find a shop where the cages were kept clean) but it's worth it even if you have to travel a bit further or pay a little more money! :)
I’ve been watching you channel for a while now , the diy cages you make are just amazing , I was just wondering what type of wood could you use to make diy cages as my my hamsters need thier cage upgrading ? xx
I feel like using vodka would be very cost ineffective, I don't know about elsewhere but vodka is much more expensive than vinegar where I am 😂 The only vodka I buy is for me to drink!
You can buy super cheap bottles of vodka here (ones not worth drinking) which cost about the same as a bottle of vinegar, that's what I use to clean with. I wouldn't use drinking quality vodka for cleaning as that would be super expensive! :)
You should try to avoid weekly cleaning if you can as cleaning too frequently can promote stress in hamsters, maybe you could try cleaning every other week instead and see how that works for you :)
Lol, those are wood pellets hamster food doesn't look like that. Please watch the video all the way through as I did talk all about them near the beginning :)
Hi Erin I bought my hamster this week hes 9 weeks old. I've watched your how to tame your hamster videos and I've been very patient but he's definitely a biter. Xxx
I don't normally use disinfectant all around the cage unless there is a medical concern, I do think it's just normal age-related thinning but I would rather be extra safe given her history :)
Oh ok do you have any tips I've got two dwarfs and they don't get along what do I do I've one died the other one was squawking and we got another one they don't hurt eachother but like get close to eachother and fidget around and I don't know what to do PS I hope iodine is okay
If you only just got your new hamster you shouldn't be trying to bond them yet, your new hamster needs to have time to settle in to their own cage for a few days (with no human contact) and then you need to start the taming process which should take you a couple of weeks. Only after your new hamster is completely settled and tamed can you consider bonding it to your other dwarf. Bonding is a very slow and delicate process that usually takes a couple of weeks, you have to start with sharing the scent of the other hamster and eventually after a few days you can move on to their first meeting. The first few meetings have to be done in a neutral area like a playpen where the hamsters are fully supervised. If several of the meetings go well only then can you consider moving them in to the same cage but it should be a completely fresh, clean, neutral cage with the correct set up for a pairing. It will probably be at least 4 - 6 weeks before the two hamsters can live together, but there is always the risk that they just won't bond with each other and you may have to keep them separated. I recommend you join a forum so you can do more thorough research on proper bonding techniques before attempting it :)
I replied to your other comment asking this the other day :) I don't recommend it as if ingested it could end up stuck in your hamster's cheek pouches or worse, block their digestive system
I came here to make sure that new law in Europe didn't take away Erin's hamster videos...That new law about no videos from the EU in the US or something like that....Ohhh I'm so scared that I won't get to watch your videos Erin!!!
Yay early 20th person also great video especially since I have a hamster you vids teach me ALOTTT and especially since its f my first time having a hamster hes a Syrian and he 6 months we got him when he was 3 months his name is Cosmo and he lves to eat I mean LOVESS
hiii erins, i have a pair of robo sisters... i adopted them from a friend. it's been a few weeks since they arrived here. To make it easier to explain their names are Yelena and Svetlana. So, they've been running after and fighting and squeaking. Before, it was pretty fine. Both still do their daily activities, cheerful and all. But lately Yelena has become more powerful. Svetlana ended up hiding and sulking and not using wheel, no longer explore things. Yelena on the other hand has been soooo active and curious and energetic. I wonder if I could do anything to help Svet. She refuses to get out of her house these days. She's eating and drinking, but just hiding. FYI, I have two wheels for each, two hide outs. Previously I only have one drinking bottle, one food container, one bath. But now that Svet is sulking so much I prep two food containers and two bath and separate the levels of the cage. Erin: I use a homemade disinfectant...
Me: oh ok the usual one part water and one part vinge-
Erin: VODKA.

Me: yes

I was like, wait what?
I love it, that one maybe I could use because I absolutely HATE the smell of vinegar. I know you can wash and wipe it off but sometimes some of the vinegar smell remains

My boy Fish is the same age as Iodine and it's scary how fast the time seems to have gone! It feels like yesterday that they were little!
I’m currently building your “test tube” cage as I’ve been in love with it ever since watching!
I can’t wait for my ham’s to explore it ♥️
This is an old comment so I'm not sure if your gonna reply but how did it go?
Also if you do respond comment two comments so I can see, cause I may not see the first one

Why do u use pellets for the bedding?
The hamster has special needs I forget the whole story
My dwarf hamster started losing fur. Hers was cystic ovaries, she had to them removed. Hopefully her fur grows back now!
Lovely Iodine
Not a rude question. But why do you use pellets instead of the soft bedding? Just wondering.
