Sarah's Breast Cancer Story

  • At 27, Sarah Pascual was working part-time as a waitress, going to nursing school full-time, an active swimmer and training for a volleyball tournament. Sounds like a lot right?
    Well, there was even more on Sarah’s plate when she found a lump after playing volleyball and swimming. As a nursing student, she knew something was wrong. She knew that the lump she had found could potentially be cancer.
    Uninsured, Sarah was able to get seen by the doctor thanks to The Susan G. Komen grant and The Cancer Therapy and Research Center in San Antonio. Because of her age and not having a family history of breast cancer, she was told that she didn’t have the right kind of breast cancer.
    They ended up doing an ultrasound instead of a mammogram which the doctor had ordered. When the ultrasound came back, it came back normal and they sent Sarah on her way. Almost a year later, she grew a second lump and through a biopsy, found out that Sarah indeed had cancer.
    Sarah shares the rest of her story and gives you advice on how she was able to raise money for her breast cancer treatments in this video.

    I've read one too many diagnosis stories just like this. It has to stop. These dismissive doctors need to be punished for their gross incompetence.

    Sadly, I just read that Sarah passed in November, 2020. I was so angered by the way she was treated when she tried to get a mammogram. She was a very strong young woman and my heart breaks for her family. This story should have never ended this way. She should have been taken seriously from day one; we know our body and know when something is not right. Rest In Peace Sarah and thank you for sharing your story.

    My heart goes out to you Sarah! To have to go through breast cancer at such a young age is awful enough, but to also have to worry about financial ruin as a result is beyond my comprehension! I'm so glad that I was taken care of in Canada! Our public healthcare is NOT like public health care in the US. No Dr here would withhold a diagnostic test due to lack of insurance! When I was diagnosed I was lucky enough to have every test possible done. Surgery, chemo and radiation all covered. Excellent care and years of follow ups! It has now been 18 years for me. I wish you all the best!!!

      I don’t know when you wrote this: it doesn’t really matter though. I wish you the best of luck, I’m in hospital at the moment. Your mother has my prayers and you have my thoughts and best wishes and prayers as well. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t go to church - but I do wear a crucifix. I do believe. Equally, I’ve had a very hard time medically, first chronically ill and now this! Just for the icing on top of being in a wheelchair and all of that I’m also legally blind! But I’m not here to talk about me - I just want to wish you the best of luck, let you know that people do care - I’m in Australia. You have my thoughts with you and if there was any support I could possibly give you I’m here honey. Wishing you the best 🦋🧚🏻‍♀️💜🇦🇺🌈🌹❣️

    I found a small lump and have a few concerning symptoms, I also have no insurance because I'm a stay at home mom of two toddlers , my husband works and we can't afford it for ourselves. Our children are covered through Medicaid. I tried to go through a low income program where I wouldnt have to pay full price for a mammogram, but I was denied because I'm only 23 years old. There is a history of breast cancer and cancer in general in my family so that just scares me even more. I have an appt Monday at an imaging center to have a mammogram and ultrasound where I'm going to have to pay $300 just for the mammogram. If they find anything and need a biopsy it will be over $1,000 just for the biopsy alone. Not including what the pathologist will charge to see if it's cancerous of benign.

    Health insurance is not free in Canada.People pay a lot a lot of taxes , including health insurance tax. If you work in Canada it would be deducted whether you like it or not.

    • @MissTiaPet
      @MissTiaPet 4 года назад +1

      It’s not “free” but if you’re unemployed or working part time or whatever you can still walk into any hospital and be seen without a bill at the end of it. Yes, taxes pay for it. But it’s a hell of a lot better than not being able to get a proper test because you literally can’t afford it.
