I was raised from age 10 on by two strong women, my mother and grandma. We were cultural Mormons, but quite "Jack." These women raised 4 kids to adulthood and did a bang-up job, despite financial adversity. One of the reasons I abandoned Mormonism was the overt misogyny. In the 1960's my mother got a bit of shunning and derision from Utah County Mormons. This was because she wasn't active and was a divorcee. To this day, I remember that. These two women were saints to me. They persevered and raised us to be good people.

I entered the MTC and my younger brother was in there with me. We had always dreamed of being in there together. We had a plan that when we saw each other we would give the biggest hug.
The first night I had a meeting with one of the MTC presidency members. He had somehow found out my brother was there and told me when I see him I should not hug him, nor touch him, and I should “avoid the appearance of evil”.
Being a kid, and always respecting the priesthood leaders.. I knew I had to follow although it broke my heart. A few days later I saw my brother. He came running to me with open arms! We hadn’t seen each other in over a month. As he approached me, I put my hands in front of me to push him away and as he got to me I stated “I can’t hug you!” He was devastated. Inside I was too, but I was doing what I was told. This memory still haunts me. 😭😭

I left the church partially because of cracks in the beliefs and Joseph Smith, but mainly because of the ward i was in. I realized after 24 years that there were people in it who never made an effort with me, and had never spoken to me for whatever reason.
Reading the Scriptures, praying and paying your tithing is all very prim and proper.....but means nothing if you're not trying to actually be a nice person on the surface. There were people in my ward who hardly knew eachother. Church has to be social and welcoming. Your giving a lot of your own time to these people, and need something back.
But i highly encourage people to not just totally go the other way. Drugs and alcohol are still not good for you. Always try to stay healthy. Good nutrition is important.

I have learned a lot of female buttons and if my wife didn't show an interest in male buttons I wouldn't see this as a benefit. Dr. Laura Schlessinger and Dr. Ellen Kreidman (never were members) understand the strength that can come through real marriage. I'm not going to say we don't have some full grown boys with overbearing MALE EGOs but again I know some full grown girls lacking the ability to respect as well. Boy need be taught self discipline. Girls need be taught to respect. And for anyone that thinks girls are short changed is to selfish to see the bit in the mouth of all healthy males.

He then continued with saying we were now engaged and that he expected me to quit my job, obey him, wear nothing but skirts and dresses, stop wearing makeup, and go back to my natural hair color because we would be married within a month and I would be expected to obey him and start having as many babies as the Lord wanted to give us. I had a great laugh as I grabbed by Cafe Rio salad and drink and left. My husband now, knew from the start that in the words of Cartman "I do what I want!" and he is perfectly fine with that! As an active member of the Church and priesthood holder, it saddens me that women out there feel “oppressed” by the sacred roles of men and women. I’m in my 30’s have been married 4 years and sure, I can receive revelation for my family...that revelation is nothing without my wife. If I receive revelation say, I need to move my family, if my wife doesn’t feel right about it, that’s where it ends. I respect my wife’s opinion as equal to my own. She’s my literal equal and her opinion holds equal weight in our relationship. Unrighteous dominion is never a righteous practice.

Exmo Lex I don’t know what aspect of the Church you experienced, but the Church I live in every day women are cherished, loved, and valued. The words of a living prophet far outweigh the teachings of a dead one. I genuinely watched your video, does it matter if different teachings from the past contradict one another? I grew up in an inactive, part-member family. My father actively ignored my mother and her wishes, and because of that they divorced in a very nasty and hateful way too. I made that promise despite not coming from a traditional member home that I would not repeat that cycle. My wife has hopes and dreams, and the standing rule is she can do what she wants and as long as she doesn’t cheat on me, she can live her life to the fullest. Maybe some unrighteous men in the church think otherwise, but I promise you there are some like me that value their spouse and also respect the teachings of the church. It’s not as difficult of a balance as you portray.

Bryan Jensen I agree that there are good men in the church. My husband was one of them. I’m not saying that all individual Mormon men are misogynistic, but the church as an organization is. It’s very convenient to say “old prophets don’t matter anymore.” But even if the word of a living prophet trumps the word of a past one, remember the words of the current living prophet: “Prophets are rarely popular. But we will always teach the truth!” So either he is lying, or the other ones were. You can’t have it both ways.

joseph, brigham, kimball, and the many hundreds of others are good examples of what happens when unbridled passions are allowed to dominate our lives. in all seriousness, would any man want to wait in the living room while some other man was doing his wife upstairs in the bedroom? no. but that's the kind of oppression that mormon women have had to deal with for 200 hundred years. now some mormon is going to comment "we don't practice polygamy anymore". to which i say, d&c 132 is still on the books, it still says watch it babe or i won't call you forth on the morning of the first resurrection. mormonism still oppresses women.

Many decades ago we lived next door to a family ruled over by an abusive father. Yelling and screaming were common. The wife often wore oversized sun glasses to hide her black eye(s). Yet this same "man" was one of the elders quorum teachers in our ward. The last time I ever attended an elders quorum meeting he gave a lesson I shall entitle - righteous use of the priesthood in the home. Basically, he entered into the part of the lesson where he advocated the priesthood holders duty and right to rule over his family righteously. At this point I'd had enough. I said, "You mean I should go home and insist my daughters submit their lives to someone like you?" This brought the lesson to an abrupt end. I got up and left, never to return.

This relates to my current audio book. I am listening to the wheel of Time series and in this current book the leadership are unwilling to listen to the advice of their underlings even though those apprentices have experienced more than them. It gets so drastic to the point that the prideful leadership almost die merely since they were not humble enough to recognize they do not know everything! I do not view myself as a leader in my marriage, however I do stress about how my wife might naturally fall into the submissive role. We are still working on combatting the brainwash imposed upon our childhood.
Also, I remember as a child I was asked to call on a family member, even my own mother, to say the meal prayer if my father was unable to attend since I was the oldest son. Yuck! Even back then I believe I would have preferred she took on the leading role there.

2013 - the first prayer given by a women at general conference...? Wow I've never noticed that. Joined the church in 2008, and never noticed that. Your videos give me a new perspective on different things like women's roles and racism. I've never really paid attention to all of this when I was in church as I was probably too busy in all of the multiple callings I had.
I remember one thing that stuck in my head when I first attended a sacrament meeting in my life. All the men were wearing beautiful suits, ties and white shirts. While all the women were dressed as if they were very old fashioned and didn't pay attention to they way they looked like (compared to the men who always looked sharp). It was surprising to me as typically Russian women DO care a lot about their appearance.
Plus once I read a comment of a woman who has a beautiful family and several kids, that if her man wants sex, she must give it to him even if she doesn't want it because he is her husband and his wish is her command. I felt so sorry for this beautiful woman. It should not be like that. Sex should be a mutual desire, not something that just a man gets when he wants... This would be a great topic to one of your next videos btw if some people would want to share some stories on that.
    Thank you 💗

I believe they taught the lamanites were cursed with a “skin of blackness” and became a “scourge unto the nephites.” In Mormonism, lamanites=evil, nephites=good, so essentially the “skin of blackness” remark was to paint any people of color as evil, because when the Mormon church was invented by Joseph smith, racism was alive and well.

@@gezin82 Great comparison, it definitely seems that way. You’re so conditioned since childhood to believe in the make-believe that leaving it feels damn near impossible. Some people compare religious folks like Mormons to sheep, saying they’re all part of this sort of hive mind, no individualism whatsoever, and listen to their handlers no matter what. I’ve always thought it was more like lemmings, if the church leaders told them to jump off a cliff, they would not hesitate to do so, even if it’s detrimental to themselves. I really do hope the church leaders continue messing up and reinforcing negative, harmful “values” like sexism and homophobia in the church, because it will become a double edged sword, on the one hand it will lead to more people leaving once they accept that the church is hurting them more than helping, and on the other hand it will discourage new members from joining and it will show the world the church is NOT changing. But I have a feeling that in 20 or so years the world will be much more tolerant of others (or at least the US) and these false prophets will realize and make up some crap like “through earnest prayer we have learned that homosexuality is acceptable” or something like that. They will do quite literally ANYTHING to keep their members in the cult.

I enjoyed this video, and have been watching this channel for the last few months, as well as other 'ex mormon' channels. In fact, I've been on a research binge for three months, uncovering all the lies and frauds perpetuated by the Mormon church. I am agnostic, and have never been a Mormon (or any other faith) but I find the subject fascinating. I have a deep interest in religion, and especially as regards cults & control of thoughts, emotions and behaviour of cult members, so obviously Mormonism is a rich field of research in that area.
A few months ago I met some Mormon missionaries, had about a dozen meetings with them, and also attended a few Mormon events (such as a baptism). I had NO intention of converting to Mormonism, but went along out of intellectual curiosity.
While I feel I have researched so thoroughly over the last few months that I have found the truth regarding almost everything about Mormonism, there is one particular topic that I have not been able to find ANY information about online, and it's bugging me.
It may seem a 'minor' issue, but when I went to these Mormon church services & events I was totally SHOCKED by the behaviour of young children there & the attitude of these children's parents towards their behaviour (I will give details on request). After each of these services and events I brought up my concerns about this to the Mormon missionaries and other Mormon churchgoers, asking what the 'policy' of the Mormon church was about this behaviour. Each time my concerns were brushed aside, and I was told there was no real 'policy' about this. I can't help feeling I was being LIED to in this respect, but as I said, I can't find any information on this issue.
I know this has nothing to do with the topic of this video, but I would really like to discuss this with any ex Mormons to see if they can give me any information. Thanks in advance.

@Exmo Lex. Thanks for quick reply. I've been having problems with my email server over the last few days (messages not being sent or received) so I'll put the information in a comment here.
The first time I went to a Mormon chapel service (with the missionaries) I described it afterwards as like "being in a monkey house". There were loads of young children screaming & shouting constantly, to the point at which I could hardly hear anything being said from the podium. None of their parents were doing anything to calm them down (in fact, they seemed to be actively encouraging them, bouncing them up and down on their knees & singing along with them etc). At one point in the interval, a boy who looked about 8 walked right down the front & started banging away on the organ keys.
Then I went to a local conference, and things were so bad that I almost started shouting at some of the adults to control their children (I had to go out and have a cigarette to calm down). In front of me were two children (one aged about one year old) who were standing up on hard wooden pews, wrestling (& even biting !) each other alternating with lying on the pews & kicking their legs in the air. One of them had a kind of flexible glow stick and was standing on the pew right in front of me (facing away from the podium) and was 'whooshing' it about in front of me for about 15 minutes to the point I thought I was going to have an epileptic attack (flashing lights). Two seven year old girls behind me were constantly chattering about 'boys' in their class, and next to me was a girl about 12 constantly playing a game on her mobile phone (albeit with the volume down). Meanwhile, another young child in the pew in front of me was EATING a packet of felt tip pens, and throwing them all about. At NO point were any parents reprimanding these children or trying to stop them, even when they were engaged in dangerous behaviour (such as the one year old standing on a hard wooden pew from which he could have fallen off & injured himself).
Meanwhile, once again I could hardly hear a word that was being said from the podium due to a constant background noise of chattering, wailing, screaming & shouting. It was like the sounds you would get in a horror film when somebody walks down the halls of a Victorian asylum.
For the last 20 minutes, there was a baby screaming it's head off so loudly that I'm sure nobody could have heard anything that was being said from the podium. I had to restrain myself from finding the parents and saying to them "Stop being so fucking SELFISH ! Take that baby outside and the rest of us HEAR what's being said."
The next time I went to a Mormon chapel service I was shocked to see kids coming in with big bags of toys (including toys that make NOISE and / or have flashing lights). Three young brothers (aged about 4 - 7) immediately pulled out loads of toys, knelt down in front of a pew (facing AWAY from the podium) and proceeded to play with them on the pew. Little children were running about unsupervised.
Even ADULTS were behaving in ways that I can't imagine happening in ANY other church setting (such as eating food & having private conversations with each other whilst people on the podium were giving testimonies).
All this shocked me because when I was young my family went to a mainstream Christian church, & everybody would pay attention to what was being said. You never talked to anybody else unless it was absolutely 'essential (e.g - 'You've dropped your hymn book') and if you did, you WHISPERED in.
Yes, I know with VERY young kids (aged up to about three) it's hard to 'control' them, or make them understand the need to pay attention / be silent etc, but a lot of the kids I'm talking about were aged much older (a 12 year old girl playing on her mobile phone all through the service ! Sitting right next to her parents ! WTF !)
In the church I went to as a kid, children LEARNED to behave during services, DIDN'T play with toys, and if a baby started screaming , one of the parents would take it outside. Since then, I've attended Hindu temples, Buddhist temples, Sikh temples & a few other Christian churches, and I've always seen well behaved children .
Each time I mentioned afterwards how shocked I was at the children's behaviour, the Mormons just said "Some parents aren't very good at controlling their children" which I thought was a BULLSHIT response, particularly with regard to my genuine concerns about very young children jumping up and down on wooden pews from which they could fall off and crack their skulls. Also, what father isn't capable of telling his 12 year old daughter sitting next to him "Put your mobile phone away and listen to the sermon".
This made me wonder if Mormons have a policy about allowing children just to do what they want in church (they can behave like screaming monkeys, eat felt tip pens. play with toys, chatter about boys in their class, play on their mobile phones etc) and they will still magically be "receiving the spirit" just by virtue of BEING THERE. ? Also, with regard to dangerous behaviour (such as jumping up and down on the pews) do Mormons believe that their children are magically 'protected' whilst in church ?

@@DaisyPumpkin23 when I was young I remember constantly being shushed and told to use my whisper voice. The mothers took the crying babies outside. I would say it was similar to your experience at other Christian denominations. After the meetings though I would go pretty crazy. I remember playing hide and seek running through the entire church. Most of the adults would just ignore me.
Some Mormons consider themselves magically protected all the time. I knew several members that would drive recklessly, speeding, falling asleep at the wheel, jumping off cliffs, rock climbing cliffs with no protective gear, fire jumping, etc. And they were protected by God the whole time basically invisible. Maybe they were just young and dumb, but there was definitely a, "I'm protected by God so I can do anything."
Needless to say there were some youth leaders that I wasn't aloud to drive very long distances with. I was also told repeatedly not to jump off anything at camp outings.

    • @DaisyPumpkin23
      @DaisyPumpkin23 4 года назад

@Jayce - Thanks for your reply. The subject of 'protection from God' has reminded me of another question that I haven't been able to find an answer to. I saw a RUclips comment recently that said Mormon children are told that when they get baptised they'll get some kind of 'superpowers' (such as the ability to know if somebody is telling them lies or not, and have some kind of 'entity' watching over them 'protecting' them). This was only ONE RUclips comment, and I haven't been able to find any other sources to confirm whether this claim is true or not. Do you know anything about this ?
The Mormon missionaries took me to one baptism of a child (a boy who looked about 9 years old) and I found the whole event very disturbing. This kid clearly had NO idea of the MEANING of what he was saying in his 'testimony' afterwards (perhaps he only agreed to be baptised on the promise of 'super powers' and imagined he'd be like Spiderman ?)) ~
"I believe the Book Of Mormon is true" (I'd be amazed if he'd even READ it !)
"I I believe Joseph Smith was a prophet" (Did he even KNOW what a 'prophet' means, and has independently studied different accounts of the story of Joseph Smith ?)
"I believe this is the one true church" ? (How can he possibly KNOW this, without an exhaustive study of comparative religion and a deep understanding of the multitude of other Christian denominations, and a good grounding in the Bible and Christian theology ?)
Of course, this young kid was being PROMPTED by someone standing behind him TELLING him what to say.
It was clear to anybody watching the whole service (without a Mormon bias) that this young kid had NO idea of the 'gravity' and meaning of the situation, and was just doing that thing young kids do of 'going along' with what the adults expected of him. and saying what they wanted him to say.
He didn't seem to be taking it ''seriously' at all - giggling when the men put their hands on his head to infuse him with the 'holy spirit', and even minutes before the baptism started he was running around the hall in his white 'baptism suit' shooting a toy ray gun and wearing silly toy spectacles. This LACK of any 'sombre' preparation for the act of baptism runs counter to how it would be performed in ANY other kind of church.
This is the big enigma I find about Mormonism. As I said, I'm an 'agnostic', but I'm 'wired' for spiritual experiences. I have had profound spiritual experiences at Sikh temples, Buddhist monasteries, even just walking in the countryside & appreciating nature. I've even started regularly attending my local Anglican church, and find the services beautiful. poetic, moving & uplifting.
Yet the three times I went to a service at the Mormon chapel I found it absolutely 'spiritually' DEAD, and completely lacking in ANY kind of spiritual' atmosphere or tone of 'reverence'..
I have read half of The Book Of Mormon, but have found NOTHING 'spiritual' or 'poetic' in it, compared to some of the wonderful passages in The Bible, or in Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist religious texts. It's not only the worst 'holy book' I've ever read. It's the worst book I've ever read in ANY genre whatsoever.
How can people get all teary eyed making 'testimonies' to a religion that (for me at least) is absolutely lacking in ANY kind of ability to induce genuine 'spiritual' experience ?

    • @blueredmagic
      @blueredmagic 4 года назад +1

@@DaisyPumpkin23 Yes, Mormons do believe in those. The "Power of Discernment" and "The Holy Spirit" that tells them when things are right and wrong and or makes them feel things. Kind of like a spidey sense. It also protects them if something bad is about to happen. I've never seen the Power of Discernment work, and the feelings of the spirit are either voices in your imagination or feelings and hindsight used with cognitive bias.
That's the problem with childhood indoctrination. For me when I was 8 it wasn't about getting super powers. I didn't even understand the spiritual side of it, it mostly just went over my head. I honestly still haven't read the entire BOM and at the time I knew pretty much nothing about Joseph Smith. I didn't know what it meant to "feel the Spirit" until I watched Zelph on a shelf's video about it.
For me, I remember being really happy though because I was making my entire family unit and every adult happy by "choosing" to get baptized. It's not really a choice when it's the only option on the table and it means making your entire family proud or disappointed in you. They will also later use this against you if you want to leave. You should watch ExmoLex's video on baptism. It's very spot on.
Even though I had never really felt the 'spiritual' things I was still very mush culturally Mormon until I was 24. I think for most people it's about sticking with their Tribe and the narratives that they know. It makes them feel good because they "know" all the answers and everyone around them is affirming the same narrative.
Children are Prompted to bare their testimonies from the time they can talk. It was a common occurrence to have an adult whisper into a young child's ear at the pulpit exactly what to say on fast testimony meetings. After a lifetime of childhood indoctrination you're supposed to be able to regurgitate your own testimony. And once you repeat it enough times the human mind starts to believe it.

When the Anglican Church admitted women to the priesthood, and in due time they became bishops, the sky did not fall down!
They have added enormously to the depth of experience and ministry.
Anything else is misogyny, pure and simple. (Maybe that should be IMPURE)
All other churches should go for equality and equity within themselves.
Sadly some churches have further to go along that road than others.
Some even don't allow their priests to marry. Consider the possible results which we have seen worldwide, because of this.
In his time, Christ is most likely to have married, as that was the custom for all men in those days.
Remember too that half the population is female, and deserves an equal voice in all matters theological and secular.

It is well documented that Mormonism is not Christianity. That they use the same words with different meanings. I can't blame someone after leaving Mormonism to turn to atheism. Since they never knew Biblical Jesus. Since they never knew him how are they able to Judge him ? When you don't know him then you are justified in saying anything and have that mean whatever you say it means. This is true with anything that is considered a cult. Cults and Religions are not Christianity. Christianity is following the Biblical Jesus. To say one is atheist is acknowledging that the Biblical God does exist. Or the alternative is nothing and I mean nothing matter's. Obviously that is not your case. Deception is the nature of Mormonism and regardless if they slowly change policies. It is fundamentally against the WORD and is of the worldview.

I've been out of touch for a while, so I don't know if my polyamorous friend is still with the same people, but all were on the exact same page when I last checked.
It is a thing, and it clearly works for them, and as long as communication and healthy boundaries are in place, why should it bother me?

Or that he is at odds with his sexuality. I often play with the idea that good ole Joe Smith was asexually and only involved in so many women to create a power structure. Not the most plausible idea though, but fun to think of.

Appreciate the thoughtful video and heavens knows our girls/women deserve so much better than the hand they’ve been dealt. You mentioned 3 things, but there was a 4th that we’ve tried in our home - following your husband, so long as he’s following the Lord. If he’s not following, she’s off the hook. And I’d like to say additionally, that my understanding of true priesthood leadership is servant leadership. A servant leader isn’t consumed with enacting his agenda on everyone else (like a ceo, or political leader), but is far more vested in helping those he leads in helping them achieve their goals.

Ace Trades great concern. I don’t have a good answer. Putting trust in anything is high risk and vulnerable. The concept has certainly been used to reek havoc and manipulate the lives of many. I think it’s good to be aspirational and try, but fault no one for being burned and taking their ball and going home.

@@bennymcgreer4113 that was a great, well thought out honest answer. Ya, I got to that point as well, realized there wasn't sufficient evidence for any of the beliefs associated with things like the priesthood.

LDS church needs to evolve so women are equal, right now they answer only to men, why can't a woman become a bishop or a prophet? we are in 2023 not in 1800's, I recently met a woman missionary in Fort Lauderdale she said she wanted to become a missionary in Africa, I was thinking women are already oppressed in third world countries by men so basically LDS church want to go there and teach women to to be submissive to men and continue to be oppressed, instead of being equals, specially in corrupt third world countries were women have little chance of getting ahead, this makes no sense, LDS church please evolve and keep up with the times.

Yeah I left religion when I was 10, I saw the world around me was massive and was fortunate enough to go to a school with people from many different religions, asked my mom why I can't worship Allah like my friend abdul from school and she explained to me that we are Christians, then she explained to me the concept of religion. My mom told me that the 10year old me then asked her how was she sure that were praying to the right God lol I was a very curious little guy. As I grew older as got alot into studying physics and biology to a point when I was literally failing my exams because I was obsessed with only certain aspects of these subjects, like I got obsessed with theory of relativity and theory of evolution (I know completely different), even tho I was not a very good student :p, I got obsessed with these to a point when I was spending close to 10hours a day researching about this stuff, got some of it, some of it didn't make any sense but I still kept on reading. The universe still baffles me to this day, I've had major anxiety problems related to feeling isolated in the universe etc(I know I sound like a complete idiot) etc.
But at this point religion is something so man made for me that I find it waste of my time to even talk about it now after obsessing over it for all my teen years.
Your video was in my recommended list and I thought I should share this with everyone lol

My parents never raised my sister to only be a mother and home maker that does everything her husband says without question. The explanations I’ve heard have been along the lines of ‘wife’s should respect their husbands because they have the pressures of leading the household’; husbands are also told to honor and love their wife. It was never anything so ugly in my church were women had to be so meekly submissive and treated like second hand people.

If they want a job, or a place where they know can make a difference, they should be able to..
