I was born and brought up in Walthamstow, worked there in the sixties. The market was absolutely buzzing and you could buy anything . Its not been the same since the eighties. Such a shame as it was the best market around.

Markets will just go down hill now I suppose. Unless they up their game and change them into more advanced stalls. Blame the internet.

It;s a real shame how it is now... I remember when I was a kid over 40 years ago that place was packed the whole mile

Market have declined in response to a series of societal and economic changes over the past 30 to 40 years - no one reason. I feel for those that recite memories of busier (and allegedly better) times (my family worked in the market from the late 1960s through to 1999) and whilst they were great (and profitable) years, the market and the town centre has had to adapt to changing shopping habits. We all shop differently nowadays and no market in London is now immune to these changes. Romford, Walthamstow, Dalston, East Street, you name them, they have all declined compared with 40-50 years ago because of the changes to how consumers shop. I just hope it goes full circle and we start to see these old markets coming back into vogue in a post-Covid world.
