  • Today, we're going to talk about a fascinating natural phenomenon that graced the skies of the United States from May 10-12, 2024, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. What you are seeing are timelapse and still footage taken with any of three devices:
GoPro Hero 12 Black in star mode
    iPhone 14 Pro Max
Pixel 8 Pro in Night Sight mode

Enjoy the images and videos. Our favorite comes at the end where the GoPro 12 Black caught a sky without Northern Lights until just at the end. We also enjoyed all the satellites, starlink, and who knows what else was in the sky. The Moon can also be seen settings to the West. The Northern Star can be seen in many of the images. We also think we saw angels in the sky in a few images, or so it looks like! None of the images were tweaked or enhanced.
Firstly, let's discuss what causes this mesmerizing spectacle. The Northern Lights are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind. These disturbances alter the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere, where their energy is lost.
The reflection of this energy is what we perceive as the dancing lights of the Aurora. The event in May 2024 was a result of a strong solar storm, which sent a massive wave of solar wind towards Earth, causing a geomagnetic storm.
Now, you might be wondering, 'How rare is it for the Northern Lights to be visible in the United States?' The answer is, it depends on where you live. In the northernmost states like Alaska, Minnesota, and Maine, the Aurora can be a relatively common occurrence. However, for most of the country, it's indeed a rare and special event. The last time a geomagnetic storm of this magnitude occurred was in 1859, known as the Carrington Event.
So, what exactly are the Northern Lights? Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a natural light display in the Earth's sky, predominantly seen in the high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and Antarctic). The lights are caused by the collision of solar wind and magnetospheric plasma with the Earth's atmosphere.
Lastly, is there anything to be concerned about with this event? While the Northern Lights themselves are harmless, the solar storm that causes them can have some impacts on our technology. For instance, it can cause disruptions in satellite-based services, like GPS and mobile networks, and even lead to power grid fluctuations. However, scientists and engineers are already working on mitigating these potential issues.
In conclusion, the Northern Lights in May 2024 are a rare and awe-inspiring event that may not yet be over with. As always, thanks for watching and please subscribe. To help us continue our creation of videos, please consider buying us a copy of coffee at the link in the description.

In the middle of the video we caught a very strange cloud that to us looked like Angels from different angles, what do you think? And what are all those weird lines and arcs in the sky? Starlink, Satellites, what else?
