Sunak sets out tougher rules to combat 'sick note culture'

- People with anxiety and milder depression face losing entitlement to disability benefit payments as Rishi Sunak set out a “moral mission” to reform welfare.
The prime minister said the recent rises in spending on sickness benefits were “obviously financially unsustainable” as he set out plans for wide-ranging reforms of the welfare system to change how it deals with such mental health problems.
After long-term sickness rose to a record 2.8 million, Sunak said that “something has gone wrong” since the pandemic and that too many young people in particular were being “parked on welfare”. He warned that “we risk not only letting those people down, but creating a deep sense of unfairness among those whose taxes fund our social safety net”.
Sunak has already been accused of “demonising” those with mental health problems after a speech in which he argued that the welfare system was “over-medicalising what are essentially the everyday challenges and anxieties of life”.
But he faced down critics who accuse him of lacking compassion, insisting: “There is nothing compassionate about leaving a generation of young people to sit alone in the dark before a flickering screen watching as their dreams slip further from reach every passing day.”

'People to help you back to work' has meant harassment and benefits withdrawn in the past. That will work really well for those off work for mental health reasons.
I was off work once with stress. Caring for a dying spouse and an NHS patient case load three times the maximum safe limit. This policy would have finished me.

Attacking the hard working taxpayer by the sound of it ,none of us know when illness will strike and to have the decision made by a private company no doubt rather than a GP is something we should all be concerned about .....
Why does he keep saying since the pandemic? The Tories have been defunding the nhs for 14 years and waiting lists to treatment have been getting longer and longer. I recently couldn't even get medication as no chemist's had it in stock! I hear people,are dying because brexit has created a lack of some medications. The fault is not the pandemic as sunak is trying to blame but conservatives

If his party who has ruled over the last decade had actually funded preventative mental health care and made it accessible, we wouldn't have a mental health epidemic would we? I can barely get out of bed in the morning because of a physical but also mental health issue. Every job I've tried has also made me want to voluntarily section myself. How am I supposed to just... function... when I can't? Explain that one Rishi. I could be a software developer earning far more than on benefits. In fact, I was a developer and it made me so unwell mentally. Rishi is ignorant.

Absolutely my thoughts. Would all these people be off work for mental health if they got proper treatment? It's such a complicated thing as well... you NEED personalised health care, not this sending you away with pills.

If you can't give people hope, you can't expect anything from them - we are human not machines!

There is little to no incentive to work. As a worker we have to pay for everything as people on the dole get majority of it free. I could work my guts out and get hardly any money after mandatory expenses are paid for. It's not like the old days were the work place use to offer a care package which includes transport or a house... nowadays the government toffs expects this to be earned via little wage package we've got left and it's simply not doable without accruing mass debts.
Instead of targeting the sick and vulnerable in society Rishi should concentrate on releasing some of the burden workers face like doing away with paying 3 lots of tax for same thing... that'll be a start.
My taxes being a safety net for the sick is not my main concern!

I’m all for helping people back to work as work is very good for you and it can drastically improve your mental health but I have a feeling this is not gonna be done in a compassionate way and a lot of people are gonna suffer

All the companies that only hire folk for 1 or 2 days a week are now going to lose those staff, because they need longer contracts. I would love to hear the jobseeker advisors explain telling someone they have to go for an interview at a job that will force them out of benifits and not be enough to live off.

I got a learning disability suffer with anxiety but I am working 45+Hours at NMW yes I was unemployed for years I mo help from DWP to find work yes I do get PIP but I am now contributing for it as well
Good for you. same here. I worked, then had a mental breakdown and shot myself in the mouth with a air pistol. Things change. Very fast. It's not the point. People shouldn't be forced into working when they are not fit for work.
It's slavery. I struggle with anxiety so bad sometimes I cannot go shopping when i'm hungry. I have nervous breakdowns. Not everyone is the same. This in the end will probably end with me attempting to take my life again. I cannot fit in as normal.
Fix the toxic workplace culture then people might show up. Many people have suffered workplace trauma that's lead to mental health issues.

I was inactive economically because i was a tradwife .i breastfeed my bevy of children exclusively for at least two years each. All itchy cares about is MONEY! I he cared about the welfare of society and the country the economic problems of the country would right themselve. I was inactive evomically for most of my life but i wasn't a layabout. I was highly qualified and znd did loads of unseen voluntary work for many years.
Reassuring that when someone anyone has an illness or life changing condition that means their ability to work is limited the very system set in place to help them and paid for while in work is now being taken away by a billionaire with an alternative motive . Get a private company to give sick notes great way to have all that valuable private patient nhs medical data out there ready to be sold off
You have no idea you need to help diagnose so they don't end up in hospital this is a fact what about people that are to scared to get a diagnosis but they actually have a condition that is serious .
Pity We can't do something about our sick and ever worsening politics that appear to be in terminal decline. Just trading in one dubious bunch for another is no solution.
Appalling!!! I have long covid and am disabled bedbound and cannot possibly work. It is a debilitating disease - if I had cancer would he force me back to work. This is pure ignorance into the suffering this group has experienced. Total lack of medical expertise behind these statements. Embarrassing frankly!!! I hope no one he cares about has to go through what we do. More research and funding to support people is needed not draconian and false measures. And a group so ill they can’t stand up for themselves to fight back. Bully!
