The instrumentation on this is PHENOMENAL for 1985, just stellar stuff for that window of time.
I still remember hearing this demo the first time in 1985 and how blown away I was by it. One of the highlights in my tape trading career 😍
Full respect to Zetro for writing "Raging Waters" what a song ...and no disrespect to Zetro but Chuck gave these songs new life and placed them on the highest pedestal ..."Hell's winds scream sacrilege..the great White closes in....aahhhhh"!
Isn't it insane?! Raging Waters is on my all-time forever playlist, what a credit to zetro. Plus the fact he was a major force I'm my fav band of all time... EXODUS!!!
I believe we can say this for sure without disrespecting zetro. Zetro is incredible, I've been rocking with em since the 80s. But I agree, Chucks voice, power, soul, background for the lyrical content and everything... Is too tier. He fits testament to the tee.
Yeah I don’t know but then when Zetro Joined Exodus he found a new Style that made him into an even better Vocalist 🤘
And that, Kiddies, is how Metal sounded in 1985, those of us lucky enough to hear it the 1st time round, are blessed
Been listening to these songs for like 25 years - JUST NOW learning that Zetro from Exodus wrote so many of these amazing vocal lines! I have told everyone in my house and nobody cares (not even my cat) but it is truly incredible to my tiny brain.
Honestly I think he fits Testament better than Exodus, and it's weird that his voice actually sounds better here than it did on Pleasures of the Flesh.
I was in the same boat!!! Exodus has been my favorite metal band ever since the 80s... And I had not heard zetro on the Legacy/Testament tracks until a couple short years ago, myself!!! Right there with ya on that!! It's kinda awesome though, gives me a whole demo to listen to as if it's new. I miss the era of the best albums releasing consistently, having to find out about other bands by looking at the shirts my fav bands would be wearing inside the cassette, vinyl, CD sleeves 😂, plus some sick Zines. When everything was word of mouth, tape trading, shows etc ! We get these little time capsules of new material now even though they were released back when we grew up with the bands. I love it. Cheers to ya!!!!!

Wow, "Reign of Terror" was absolutely crushing. Especially for 1985. I'm going to have to listen to this on repeat a few more times to get my head bludgeoned some more.

I agree with you somewhat. Both are legends for sure, but have had uneven careers. Saw both many times. But where would it end? What about Razor? Coroner? Dark Angel? Kreator? I could go on and on. The line had to be drawn somewhere. The Big 4 is The Big 4. But it doesn't take away from what makes Metal great. Thrash forever dude! Respect.
This is actually fucking great. Shame Over the Wall isn't on here. I would have loved to hear Zetro doing that.

I was at the demo release party at Ruthie's Inn in Berkeley. Attitude Adjustment, Sacriledge, Legacy and Suicidal Tendencies... It was ok, I guess.

Always been more of an Exodus, Sacred Reich and Forbidden fan but no one can deny this is probably the best thrash demo. Especially with Zet offering one of his nastiest vocal performances and the overall musicianship is some of the best in the game

This is a great sounding demo. I wish that Testament would release this demo and another one that I have heard about which is The Legacy Demo 2. I have already listened to Steve Zetro Souza do Reign Of Terror and Alone In The Dark from Testament's First Strike Still Deadly rerecordings album which is a MASTERPIECE, but I have always wanted to hear more songs with Steve. As much as I love Steve's singing, I am really glad that Chuck Billy is the one that became the lead singer for Testament. He is one of my favorite lead singers ever. This is so awesome!! Thank you for posting this video. I really enjoyed listening to it.

@@heavymetalofeasternblocBack before this demo was made I remember Mike saying his main influence was Clive Burr. You can totally hear it in this recording. I wish I still had the Black Angel demo with him on it.
Rhythm guitar sounded better on the demo too. The studio sound is way too scooped.

Awesome! Zetro on vocals. First heard this version of "Burnt Offerings" on a Megaforce compilation called "Deeper Into The Vault". It had a lot of stuff that was rare at the time, though some of it got released later on cd reissues and such.

Since those years, the best Thrash band
1 of my top 5 favorite thrash metal albums. Chuck and Steve did a great job with the vocals of the record.
To me, the drumming and vocals on this demo are quite a lot better in comparison with the debut album.
I actually hear guitar part nuances here that are buried on the debut album, if they exist at all on it. Go figure.

This is pure gold and I'm surprised at the sound. It's pretty decent. A lot of the old thrash demos from the 80s sounded pretty bad. I love Steve's vocals. I think they sound great. I'm glad they included Steve on the First Strike Still Deadly album and they added Reign of Terror over there as well... I used to own some tapes with some of the demos like Vio-Lence, Forbidden and some others, but I'm not sure I had this one. I might've had it and forgot. In any case - was great to listen to this.
Zet sounds great here! I try to imagine how Chuck would have sounded with Exodus during that time.

8:07-8:30 of Rein Of Terror goes so hard!
Truly great! Fucking awesome. Heavy as shit. Reign of Terror might be the best song in thrash history not to be on an album. Also love the live version on Testament's Live at Eindhoven '87. This demo is a portent of things to come. Their first album is easily in the top 10 or 15 thrash albums of all time. OVER THE FUCKING WALL!

I agree!! When I first listened to it from the EP Return To Apocalyptic City back when it first came out I loved it big time. It really is an amazing song.
If you think about it, it appeared on The Legacy in the form of C.O.T.L.O.D.

I am glad that it happened the way that it did, but it would have been very interesting to see how Testament would have been if Steve Zetro Souza never left. I am just so used to Chuck Billy being their lead singer since their debut album The Legacy has come out, and to me he has the perfect singing voice for all of Testament's songs. Steve also really sounds amazing on this demo .

Yeah Ronchette was killin it on this demo! Clemente is one of my favourite drummers but I like Mike's versions much better than the ones Louie did for debut album...

I was barely 10 years old when The Legacy came out , and I became a huge fan in 1988 when The New Order album came out. I never once thought that Testament was trying to copy Metallica at all. To me they were just another Thrash Metal band with amazing songs and albums. I actually love Testament more than Metallica. I love every Testament album that has come out including The Ritual and Demonic.
