Brian I just found out that nest the app does support nest protect but I didn't know that this device was available in Australia until I looked it up although no other users said anything about Australia and I haven't found any other RUclips user in Australia who has tried these so I don't know what the voice sounds like here because in the US it sounds like an American voice in Britain it has a British voice but here I don't know! here though it's $189 per nest protect smoke detector where is in Britain at £89 or maybe a bit more than that but not much more! But one question, how do you add a nice protect device to your nest account if a person doesn't have Wi-Fi because the only Wi-Fi I've got is a 4G Wi-Fi and it's on prepaid with a company called Telstra because that's all I can afford on a disability support blind pension! I was told by the good guys that my one should work if I had to use Wi-Fi but they said to me that if I had a home Wi-Fi it would be better but I don't have it connected because I don't trust the NBN! The other thing is they couldn't tell me how this device works without Wi-Fi and how to add a next protector vice to my account when I create one without Wi-Fi because they're really just sales people, so how does it work Brian?
as I said before this would help people with disabilities so much especially those who are totally blind because we want to be as independent as we can and to have the nest protect to be allowed here I can't tell you how much that would mean to me and others like me!
Nest should consider incorporating a third wire option for homeowners who wish to interconnect their wired homes. This would allow users to choose their preferred mode of communication, either through wiring or IP, via the app. I have around 11 dependable wired smoke detectors in my house that don’t rely on Wi-Fi. All I need is for Nest to be activated by any of these detectors and alert me on my phone when I’m away from home. I find Nest’s marketing strategy to push their units quite distasteful.

Is it also using Tread to talk to Nest Thermostat as well to turn off fans in furnace? Or is it your WiFi? By extension, is the Nest Hello also using Tread or simply WiFi?
Hey Bruce - as of now it’s all on WiFi for communication between those devices. I could see that changing in the next gen thermostat for the emergency shutoff, but not yet. Good question!
I'm purchasing these to be installed in a home that's being built. They will be installed before I move in and set up my internet and wifi. I assume that I can connect them to wifi once I move in. Is that correct?
my name is Tiffy I'm totally blind hearing-impaired I'm 32 years old I live in Melbourne Victoria Australia and I live on my own! Couple of questions, why isn't the nest protect available in Australia because this is where those with disabilities like mine need this because on Sunday night I was cooking some sausages and I sprayed a bit too much oil, couple together with the fact that the sausages are quite juicy the smoke rose to such a level that my current alarms and I don't know what type they are but they took some time to go off and I'm using a cobolt talking induction cooker which I taught myself how to use! however I did not realise that the smoke was rising as high because even though I could smell it I can't see it and all of a sudden the alarms just yelled at me where as what I've heard with this one it warns you first before it starts to yell and then you'll take the necessary steps, but again I don't have Wi-Fi because I can't afford it, I'm in an owners corporation although I'm on the ground floor so it's a private lot, but I need an alarm that does exactly that, talks to me because I can't see what's going on and I do try to be very careful with what I do but there might be a fire that could occur that's not even my fault one day and because I can't see what's going on I'll need to know where that fire is located so I don't put myself in any danger, this would help me but it's not available here it seems! The other question is does the app for those who are blind in the US or even the UK work with a screen reader called VoiceOver? VoiceOver is part of a group of screen readers that help those with sensory disabilities and other types of disabilities read the screen where they can't read with their eyes for example myself, does the app tell you exactly what you're doing on the phone because the alarm might talk but I've watched a lot of videos on RUclips and those people who are using their phones they can see the app but I can't if it was available here! I'm sorry for the long explanation but I've been looking for something like this for ages ever since my former carer Who passed away his family bought this apartment for me and which I appreciated but I've heard a lot about talking smoke alarms and this seems to be the best but it's not available in Australia and I don't know how to campaign for it to become available? any ideas on how I can campaign with vision Australia and blind citizens Australia to get nest protect to certify this product here because this would be an absolute godsend for people like myself who live on our own but a very independent, yes I can hear A smoke alarm but to have one warn me before the things about to yell at me would be a hell of a lot better as opposed to just blaring at me like my current ones do because it scares me to hell!

Do the wired nest protects have a standard interconnect wire. What if I only want to buy one wired protect will it connect to my existing smoke alarms so I don't need multiple protect's
That...doesn’t work. If your regulations require interconnection, then you pretty much need to replace them all or you risk being out of compliance. I would suggest you call your local fire chief and ask what’s required :). They’ll be happy to talk I’m sure!
Hi! I do not intend to have the Nest Protect connected to Wifi (unless during setup). I also only have ONE unit, so there are no other units to communicate with. My questions are: 1. I read that if the ring glows yellow it means something is wrong. It could be sensor problem, Wifi problem or other types of problems. Does this mean the ring will glow yellow all the time because of no Wifi? That´s not good at all, because of course there is a huge difference if the sensor is broken or if there is no Wifi (as I already know). Do I have to press the button everyday just to check the sensor is ok? 2. Regarding the monthly automatic self test: If there is no Wifi connection - how does the Nest know which time or date it is? I don’t want it to test alarm in the middle of the night. Thanks!
So...without having tested this for an extended period of time I can't guarantee #1. However, it performed just fine and didn't show a yellow light for me when not connected to WiFi. That's because nothing is physically wrong with the sensing on the device and it's still providing the capability it needs to in order to keep people safe. I think that's the yellow ring. It does self checks, so I don't think you need to press the sensor. However, you won't know the result. In terms of #2 - Most devices with an in-house clock will become slightly off more and more as you go. Like it's a couple of 100's of milliseconds a day and then over time, that adds up. Leave it a year, and it'll be a problem. My real question is...why wouldn't you just get a regular detector if you don't want the connectivity benefits?
