This literally shifts the blame to developing and third world countries with the saying that western nations will all meet their CO2 schedule in the near future. People in the global south will not meet those goals anytime soon because they are barely developed and it cost energy to become an developed country.

    Before blaming China consider this:
    1. historically and cumulatively the West has seven times more emissions than China. The west must take responsibility for the damage they made while getting rich!
    2. Per capita Canada, Australia the US . have double emissions of China... right now 35 other countries also have higher emissions than China
    2. Collectively the developed countries right now have lesser population than China but greater CO2 emissions than China
    3. China produces 30% of worlds goods so the rest of the world should stop exporting their emissions or should be responsible for emissions too...Stop consuming so much stuff!!!
    4. China is poorer than the US but invests 3 times more in renewables than the US and is the world leader in solar and wind

They are not happy with China since China is not dependent on the western corporates anymore. The West will always, in a sophisticated manner, try to scuttle development of other countries if it does not suit their companies. What they want to say is "Oh you are polluting too much! The West didn't cut their industrial emission, they just moved it to China.
And yes, China will be the crucial country in fighting climate change, because there is really no other country to take the industrial capacity of China, save some South East Asian countries in low end manufacturing.
A combination of measures must be taken, from carbon capture for existing coal plants, to Thorium molten salt reactor (a revolutionary nuclear fission technology that would allow nuclear energy to be much safer and produces a lot less nuclear waste.)
Mass EV adoption is also a must. Chinese car companies like NIO, have battery swap technology for electric vehicles, which means these battery swap stations can act as power sinks that stores energy from renewable sources during the day, and release it during peak usage hours. integrate this with a smart city system, you'll also make the entire city a green power plant.

China isn’t to blame solely for climate change but each country has responsibilities.
If you look at chinas economy, they actually are very inefficient at manufacturing which causes much waste of energy. While most western countries have slowed down from our industrial revolutions we learned how to be more efficient with our electricity for each task(we still use a crap ton in our lifestyle, that doesn’t mean we aren’t good at using what we use) Each country has propaganda which pushes their agenda however there are some checks and balances in the west for that (it ain’t perfect, nothing is) but in china there are no checks or balances on propaganda.
Same thing happened in Soviet russia, where people couldn’t improve on the system since it’s “perfect” and people can’t talk about politics. Which led to lies and decay behind the scenes through corruption and false reports and eventually a collapse of the party due to its own lying machine.
So how much of chinas renewables are viable and how many of those numbers are true? Can anyone answer that? No since you can’t ever get a straight answer that doesn’t favour the party.

Are we really gonna neglect the fact that China has 1.4 billion people and also the world factory? China's Industrial Revolution began in the 1978s and finished in 1995s. Meanwhile, the west began its Industrial revolution in the 1760s, the west already polluted the world for two hundred years and now they are pointing fingers at China for creating more gas??? Why don't we look at how the US only has a quarter of the population of China but their gas emissions are half of China's overall? The US is the office of the world and other nations are factories for them, and yet with less population, they manage to reach second place.

As for coal, it's always going to be relevant because of steel production. The renewables that they are planning to replace it with for energy are not ideal, to say the least.
I really wish people would understand how much the environment has actually changed since the industrial revolution 150 years ago. It's only 0.01% (1/100 of 1%). That ought to give some perspective.

  • @mattr8750
    @mattr8750 2 года назад +6

Really, (and i'm no fan of China in general) this isn't even the full story. All the numbers that were presented were absolutes, where, obviously China's huge population needs to be considered (unless you're for solving climate change with genocide..) Even the relatively affluent urban Chinese people (comparable to the west's middle class) have plateaued in emissions per person at an equivalent level to about Europe, which is HALF that of the per capita emissions of Australia and the US. Also, a huge sum of China's emissions are due to manufacturing stuff for the west, these are really the west's emissions being outsourced to China... Conversely, you can't just put China's massive investments into clean energy down to size either. Their investment as a percentage of GDP is many times that of Australia or the US, despite being poorer (and having more pressing priorities). And as you mention, this isn't just about trying to look good on climate change. China produces nearly half of the world's total production of coal, and consumes even more. Last I checked China's reserves would only last about 30 years, and as such a huge part of the pie, it would obviously be hard to replace that supply from the international market, even if they wanted to, which obviously they don't; Energy security would be of HUGE importance to China for a few obvious reasons.
And all this is before we even get in to moral questions such as the fact China has been contributing to global emissions for far less time than the west, And I'd bet they are still behind in total historical emissions of many western countries.
The fact is that China is making more of an effort on climate change than the US and Australia. These are the two countries I would be most judgmental of.
Their efforts funding other developing nations to go green, rather than just saying "no coal" and leaving them in the dark, is also a good example to set (even if they are loans). It is something the international community is going to need to do, because China will not be the only problem here, the rapidly developing Africa and India - both as big as China, will just as likely present the same problem China is to emissions, in the future. Which is a harrowing thought. Its not good enough to just sit on our laurels and say "get on with it China". Every developed nation (with more means to combat climate change) need to be setting the best example they can. going above and beyond, and working towards assisting developing nations given they neither have the means practically to transition to clean energy, nor the motivation morally to do so ("its not fair we don't get to power our development with fossil fuels like the west did")
Not only is excuse making like 'we are an insignificant population so it doesn't matter what we do' (see Australia), incredibly morally bankrupt, it will only hurt international negotiations with these big players, which is what saving the planet will come down to.

"Clean energy" is a misnomer. Renewable power may not produce the emissions at source, but there are many problems, from the huge quantities of wind turbine blades being buried in landfill (they have a limited life span, and cannot easily be recycled) to the disposal of photo-voltaic cells and batteries, both of which contain much that damages the environment. More needs to be done to deal with this before we start celebrating the expansion of renewables as although they may reduce carbon emissions they shift the problem to other issues.
