Running the Weweantic May 31st 2024

I am fortunate to have this small river only 9 miles from my house. I live in an area along the Atlantic Ocean at sea level. It is pretty flat here and our rivers are usually as easily paddled upstream as they are downstream. That's why having this little section of quick water is so unusual. The Weweantic River is about 30 feet wide on average, the gradient is only slight but it does provide moving water and rocks to dodge. Of course where there is moving water and rocks there are places for eddy turns, ferrying, , peal outs and even a couple of places to surf some small waves. This run was my 15th run here this year and I also ran the Shepaug River class 2 section with the AMC earlier this year also. I try to make a little slalom run of it and spend a lot of time at several spots just playing around. The downside is the portage back to car after of about 3/4 of a mile. I have got to try to open up a couple of spots this Summer when th river is low so I can get to the next bridge and do a normal shuttle with my Trax.
