the album isn’t that bad, but it didn’t live up to the claims she was making whatsoever 💀
Fr she made it out to be that the album was gonna be a magnum opus when really it’s just a simple summer album
It’s not bad but I found it to be underwhelming. The whole time I kept thinking to myself, where are the Britpop, Trip hop and Psychedelia influences she talked about? Primal Scream, Massive Attack…those are some big names to be throwing about when talking about your album.

The biggest mistake she made was firing her previous team in favor of her father.
To get rid of the people who propelled you to superstardom in favor of your father was the wrong move. Dua’s not at the point in her career where she has a die hard fan base that’ll buy/stream everything she puts out.
She needs to go back to the drawing board and perhaps rethink firing her previous team.
Does her father have experience managing other artists? It's confusing why she would choose to fire her team knowing how successful Future nostalgia was.
One of her previous managers did not approve of her collab with Kevin Parker. This drove her decision to leave. However, she should have hired a better manager rather than settling with her dad.

@@VictoriaClerici the other guy (forgot who he is) was the only one who didn’t welcome the idea. Probably because they wanted her to keep Dua in the pop genre. That was the catalyst for Dua to consider leaving TaP.

I honestly think while yes the music could be better, the failure of the era is because of the aesthetic or lack there of. like what are we doing. it’s nothing to actually sink my teeth into. future nostalgia was boosted up by the cohesive themes/aesthetics.
the rollout was soooo messy and confusing. also tragic timing.... it could be the exact same album, had she released it last year it would be doing way better numbers
Part of it is she fired her pervious team in favor of her father.
She had a machine behind her which helped propel future nostalgia to super heights. Now that the pervious team is no longer present this era is falling flat.

@@GodsFaveSim i know.... it may not seem like it by my comment but i'm a huge fan of Dua since 2016. TaP management really did wonders for her career, i'm so mad she fired them to stick with her father that clearly does not know what he's doing.
The album cover is confusing to me. The album is all about radical optimism, Dua even said that in interviews (and obviously the title). How does the cover fit in with that? All of the songs are about holiday romance - the theme of radical optimism is barely apparent. She should have just called it her holiday romance album
It was a huge mistake presenting this album as edgy and having her entire look cosplay that. This album does not give “edgy” not from the themes or even the cover/ album title (which undoubtedly is a huge part of constructing a “story)
Edit: like what was really the point of her wearing all black this era and dying her hair red when the album cover and themes aligns with a blue and summery type of theme
Seems like the only cohesive theme throughout the Radical Optimism era is confusion lol First Dua said it will be psychedelic and even had Tame impala as a producer just to release Houdini which is more pop than psychedelic. And then the rest of the album sounds like Future Nostalgia leftover/rejects. Dying her hair red, edgy live performances, mislabeling the album were blatant red herrings to build hype from the general audience but ended up backfiring to produce underwhelming reaction and criticism for a generic summer pop project.

I actually like this contrast with this 'edgy' look and the summer vibe of the album and its cover aesthetics. I think it somehow comes together well in her new illusion video. I think the clash of aesthetics when we are in an era where it seems like everything has to be just one aesthetic is actually refreshing and something unique rather than it being solely a cliche summer vibe or solely a cliche edgy vibe. There are too many cliche aesthetics out there it seems. I'm glad she didn't go down the cliche edgy route because I don't think that would work.
The red hair is not doing anything for her. I like the black hair best
This was a summer album, plain and simple. She should've promoted it as such while leaning into the jokes of her taking too much vacation.
agree. sometimes unserious and laid back is better than trying *too* hard. the marketing and album just came across like dua doesn't know what to do next.
i didn't expect much from her, she's your average pop star, her branding has never leaned much into a higher form of artistry, but i am still surprised at the lack of hits. i thought atleast one song would catch on more.
i think she underestimated how hard it actually is to stand out and keep your spot in the industry. she did well with future nostalgia, she was just too slow and unsure to keep that momentum and turn casual listeners into stans. now, putting her up against other upcoming stars.. she looks bland. a good example is sabrina carpenter, she expertly leaned into what people wanted from her with espresso. she made sure it was catchy and fun, perfect for summer radio and social media. the lyrics are satirical and dirty to suit her most known new image from her previous hits feather & nonsense. this gives her the perfect opportunity to decide where to go with a new album. that's what a single is supposed to do, that's what marketing is supposed to do.
the biggest difference between sabrina and dua comes back to dua's lack of creative focus. she's a trend follower not setter. she was smart to play with the 80s disco sound but it doesn't tell anyone watching who she is and neither did this new album. the longer she goes without properly making her brand known, the less likely she is to stay popular. she doesn't have to go deep but her flip flopping shows she isn't certain of her own vision.

I didn’t even realize that she dropped an album. She was always on vacation somewhere I kept calling her Vacation Queen.

One of the biggest issues is that she released the album on one of the worst possible weekends. Most people were occupied with the whole Kendrick v Drake beef.
During a taylor release month and espresso rocking the charts. She doesnt have the fanbase to compete with this.
I think you're overestimating the overlap between the two target audiences
people were disappointed because the expectations for the album were different than what we got (she said it’d be a psychedelic, or britpop type album and it wasn’t). And it was disappointing compared to future nostalgia of course.
But taken on its own I think it’s a pretty solid piece of work. Chill summer bop album.

Dua lipa got set up the minute her managers declared that they wanted to make her the biggest pop star in the world with this upcoming album (radical optimism). That was quickly shot down with her song choices , visual concept and the fact that industry vets like Taylor and Ariana and Beyoncé releasing this year…
except Taylor's album is not that good, and Bey has completely switched genres, while Ari is facing public backlash and her worst scandal yet. She needed better songs bc the opportunity was there for her; the door was wide open and free

@@Hiiiiiiiiieeee she has a large fanbase, that's gonna be dedicated to preodering her album and buying it before they even listened it to; not to mention kpop-style dedication to streaming has spilled to the west so her fans are gonna stream the heck of the album along with those in general public who tuned in to it via streaming services. High numbers doesn't mean it's good or successful it just means the artist is famous. irregardless of paying attention to the lyrics, sonically it's a boring album and of lower quality comparing to her previous work. And how her music sounds to ears is more important than lyricism bc the medium is music, not poetry. maybe she should've released a poetry book instead. But that being said, defending Taylor so fiercely as a fan against public opinion is so silly and reads as a young teenager. you can be critical of your fav's work - you don't need to like everything they put out. if an artist's work spans as many albums as Taylor, there's bound to be albums and singles that don't do as well or aren't a hit with the public. the nature of creative work is running into creativity drought and troubles. If you personally liked her album, okay. but many people found it pretty mid. and that's okay.

But there really is no denying Taylor‘s artistic ability at this point. Just like I’m not a fan of rap and hip-hop, but I can recognize how talented some of the artist in that genre are.

when don’t start now dropped, everyone knew what the era was going to be especially after the album title. when this era started i don’t think anyone really knew where she was going,. she had a whole era which was so thematic and people expected something similar - an album with a clear meaning and theme. this album seemed like a random selection of songs which no one can really piece together to form a meaning nor does it have a cohesive sound

I think she played it safe. It sounds like future nostalgia extended edition. She should’ve genre mixed or switched giving us a new theme and new subject matter.
I have a hard time believing Dua Lipa is in complete control of her artistic direction tbh. Artistically, she’s honestly kind of bland. To me she seems more like the face of very easily sellable music. Honestly I feel like even Taylor Swift has a stronger perspective with her work and is somehow less bland than Dua (artistically). I do like Dua’s personality and her music is good, but the more she releases the same music the less I see her as a trendsetter and more of a trend-follower made to sell records. Houdini was such a strong step in the right direction and I thought she was going to go further but from what I’ve heard from the album, it’s just more of the same Dua Lipa music playing in the background. I’m not trying to be hater, I really want to like her but I feel like if you’ve heard 2-3 of her songs, you’ve heard them all.
Taylor 💀 ttpd was so bland 💀 Taylor just has a strong fan base. Duas was bland to but unfortunately for her she doesn't have a strong Fandom that will support her work 💀
@@amira34 Taylor’s music itself is really bland but you can’t deny that she goes into her projects with a fully fleshed out vision. All of Dua’s music sounds exactly the same and it’s not easy to build a dedicated fan base when the music is made to be easily liked by everyone.
But that's what's intriguing. Houdini and Training Season were so different in music+artwork+colors+marketing that people really god hyped. I got hyped. As you said it just doesn't make sense the direction she took. The only explanation is that she lost songs from her previous team when she chose her father.

@@amira34 TTPD might feel bland to you if you’re not a huge fan of Taylor. But for the fans, this album is everything. I don’t even really think there’s any songs that are particularly radio friendly in my opinion, but you can tell if you know anything about the rest of Taylor‘s music that these songs are all written for people who know Her catalog well.
This album feels like her music before Future Nostalgia.

Her first album was a bit darker and edgy that future nostalgia, have you listened to "hotter than hell", "I can be the one" and "blow your mind" (I think that's the right title, I'm not sure) they are not disco and she shows the depth of her voice, it also youthful but not superficial, give them a try 😉 for a second while reading your comment I thought: maybe he is referring to "no rules" that song even though is good doesn't resembles that much to the ones I'm listing. But American Life was actually a good album that only failed to garner recognition because of Madonna’s political activism. This album flopped because the sound was not matching marketing and the sound wasn’t inventive or that different from future nostalgia.

Then her voice is not for you. She has such a killer voice on that track, not like the usual, boring belts that other singers do. It’s just so fresh.
I said this in another comment section but Dua is definitely regressing and is ALL OVER THE PLACE. Regarding her singles illusion was more of the same … a disco inspired song . Also I don’t get how she started this era with dark visuals and a dark production (Houdini and training season) (magic psychedelic vibes) yet her album is ocean/vacation themed . Her creative vision was not well planned

Illusion is dance/electronic/house, not disco. There is a difference. It's more modern and faster paced than the Future Nostalgia stuff. Also, her having a shark on the cover does bring dark vibes.. But yeah, the cover doesn't exactly fit with the songs

UGH you described how I felt about training season so perfectly. That song just felt like one big blue ball , was building up to something then it would vanish/ disappoint

I really like the album, but it's definitely not on par with FN. I like most of the songs, but the highs are no where near as high as Levitating or DSN. For me the standouts are the first six (End of An Era, Houdini, Training Season, These Walls, Whatcha Doing, French Exit), then Anything for Love and Maria. Anything for Love, in particular, could have been a smash if it built steadily and had a final chorus with orchestrations similar to Adele's Love Is A Game. The one chorus they gave us reminds me of Victoria Monet's We Might Even Be Falling In Love. Like ... GIVE US MORE PLEASEEEE. Overall a solid album I will continue coming back to. Excited to see what she does next.
What was so great about Don't start now ? I wish someone would explain to me. There is lots of older music, 70s-80s-90s that was more interesting than Future Nostalgia and especially Don't start now.. It brings nothing new?.. It's just pop for the radio, it's not very energetic or electrifying or memorable..

@@di7787it was one of the first retro pop songs to be popular in a long time. Pop was most heavily influenced by trap and hip-hop in general at the time. And it’s just a good song with good delivery. Not groundbreaking music theory lol
@@hhibaa99Nah, I need explanations aside from some people being very young and not having heard many 70s-80s-90s songs, because not all who loved the album are kids. The album was a really big success without being anything extraordinary or bringing anything new, it was regressive even. Granted, there are some good songs on it, but the singles were not 'wow' material. And they didn't dare to use the more modern 'Future Nostalgia' as a single. It's an album of playing it safe (just compare to other artists).. but it still sold big. To get an idea, Hallucinate, Pretty Please, Future Nostalgia, Cool, Love Again were the ones I enjoyed the most. Levitating would have been on that list if it wasn't so repetitive and had more progression, drama. I don't hate Dua, it's just that her music could have more cowbell and freshness.
@@hhibaa99 PS my opinion is based on me having listened to many of her influences for FN firsthand, from old disco to French house, to funk in all forms, to Kylie Minogue and Madonna (grew up with their music) to sadly lesser known singers like Roisin Murphy and Jessie Ware. All of these female singers did more powerful disco and funk. Not to forget about the music that doesn't get on the radio.. The success of FN is what happens when people forget about the greats. And people should also listen to way more than the radio to expand their palate. It's a bit sad that people stay interested in simple pop albums in 2020+ (or think they are extraordinary) instead of something that's more innovative, that's what makes me, as a lover of very diverse music, sad...

It's not a bad album but when you're the one that gave us future nostalgia, there's some expectations for the public. I was truly excited for the album, the idea of her doing something more psychedelic and britpop got me on.
Shes a great artist and when she listen to her audience she gets even better let's hope her next era get her to the next level.

Dua has the talent to give us a daring and exciting work, I truly wanted psychedelic pop and I guess my expectations this time we're way too high but I don't doubt she can do even better next time.

The album's cover art was such a miss to me. She said this album would give off kaleidoscopic vibes and that's what i expected. The whole album roll out was sorta jiffy.
There 2 types of Dua Lipa’s fans:
1. The ones who loves Future Nostalgia, hates Radical Optimism because it doesn’t sound the same as FN.
2. The ones who loves her first album, loves Radical Optimism because it reminds them of her old sounds ❤️
My problem with the album is that it lacks heart. There was something about Future Nostalgia that was so fun and energetic because you could feel there was love and passion put into it. The new album, while still sonically "fun" just isn't as passionate.
I saw a lot of people defending the album saying that you have to just be a miserable/depressed person to not like her new album. Personally, I love the house/disco sounds she's had on Future Nostalgia and I love Jessie Ware's new album, because they both sound like passion projects. So much love and passion went into making those projects and it shows. The new album just feels soulless, almost a product of sheer obligation to make music rather than love or passion for music.
I think this album displayed a more cautious and mature version of her, as opposed to the quick-to-fall, crazy-in-love tone of future nostalgia. It felt like even if she has had poor experiences in love, she is still very hopeful and intentional about finding love. My favorite song was Whatcha Doing. I enjoyed the album.

I think this is just who she is. She’s just not that interesting of an artist. The reason she is so big right now is because the music industry is in such a slump in terms of originality and popularity. I’m sorry but someone has to say it.
I just have. I sent some people to listen to her influences and not only. This situation wouldn't be present if people listen to older music and other genres with curiosity
I don't think Dua has a very strong vision as artist. She's this generation's Kylie Minogue. I think she'll have a big moment every 7-6 years but I don't see her as a consistent hit maker like Madonna or Rihanna. This album sounds like background noise for a summer barbecue. The "psychedelic pop" description makes no sense??? Madonna's "Confessions on a Dance Floor" fits the description of psychedelic more than anything on this album to me. I could see SOME connection to British pop like Sgt Peppers by the Beatles which I guess is 60s psychedelic but besides that I don't think the label fits. And the lyrics fall flat. Same messages on every song. "I'm a woman and I know my worth so you better please me". Falling Forever is nice I guess but it reminds me of "Gypsy" by lady gaga

Radical Optimism seems like Dua Lipa Summer dance album just like Endless Summer Vacation!
I think she missed out on a cool concept here.
I actually like the album, but I think that's because I got rid of the psychedelic expectations. The singles all have a hint of it, but they're all really pop-y more than anything.
I think the album is a fantastic pop album. Short refreshing and very fun. Great standout songs. But the single choices were so confusing alongside a confusing marketing rollout that made the album to be a completely new sound for her. And it is OKAY that this project is still reminiscent to her old work, she is great at what she does, which is making FUN refreshing pop music. No need to reinvent the wheel. And if she DOES decide to try a different sound that is awesome, but stick to a theme and consistency

It’s a fine album, there’s nothing “wrong” with it, but everything around it was wrong. A six month rollout with (what?) 16 individually released versions of the first two singles?? All this hype about who produced, who inspired it, aesthetics switching like a tour costume, and it sounds exactly like what you thought it would.

Im just gonna quickly rant about what i personally think went wrong with this album:
1. The Singles were all promoted as these dark edgy pop songs that didn’t resemble the albums aesthetic at all.
2. All three singles said the same thing but with different lyrics and similar beats.
3. She heavily promoted this album to be “Brit pop” or “psychedelic pop” influenced and i heard none of it on the record.
4. The whole “summer mermaid beach” aesthetic did not resemble the album at all. She wore all these dark and edgy outfits for all the music videos and the closest thing we got to a “beach/summer” theme was in illusion when shes sings over the water.
5. I think the only reason this albums photoshoots were all summer vacation inspired is just because Dua probably wanted to write off her vacations as business.
Anyways, even though i like the songs, coming from THE DUA LIPA! i was underwhelmed and the 4 year wait was just not worth it.
From the beginning her music has sounded so flash in the pan to me. I never thought for a second she was gonna be an artist that would last. I don’t get what other people were hearing and I feel vindicated people are finally hearing it now. She is solely selling an image. Music is secondary.

but right now she doesnt stand out because she doesnt have her thing, taylor swift has her songwriting, ariana has her voice, beyoncé has her artistic reinvention/performances/voice, even doja is super versatile, an impressive performer and is both a rapper and singer… but dua has nothing but a okay/good voice and a okay/good stage presence.
@@alissia9893 I think her producers are doing her a disservice. As stated, she and they should dare more. H*ck, we're in 2024, FN was in 2020 and Timbaland (to take an example) was leagues ahead of that more than 10 years before with what he did. Lady Gaga is another one that was more remarkable (even if I don't like her eurodance). If you take more underground artists, think of Azealia Banks' sound, think of Kaytranada, Channel Tres.. So many interesting Black artists shining bright in the electronica sphere.. So even a part of the US could be ready.. I think Dua's thing could be Dance/electronica, meaning house, she is already a big face of that and there is no other worldwide Dance star bigger than her.. too bad the Dance songs that she did were mostly generic. But I am sure the UK rave community loves her and she has offered remixers and Dj's the acapella and instrumental of Training Season and Illusion, this time round. They are taken care of ! Maybe with producers who do something different, she'll be really remarkable. But the Dance (house) music is more of a Europe/Commonwealth scene

I actually thought "Radical Optimism" was quite an intriguing title - I was anticipating a more lyrically insightful album as a result, which it isn't except for the last 3 tracks to an extent.
I'll be completely honest. I really like the album, but I need to know what happened behind the scenes.
"Houdini" not receiving the praise that was expected after such a long break may have led her to panic a little bit. Was it too drastic ? No, it wasn't.
Then, she tried once again with "Training Season," which received even more promotion to ensure its success yet failed to live up to the expectations in terms of performance and stability. My point is : "to avoid a commercial failure, something needed to be done."
I'd add to exemplify my thoughts that the album name took months before being announced (which is not enough to make a whole new album from scratch, but which is more than enough to come back and work on demos both from this project and previous ones (she mentioned some in her thank you note.)
One of the perks of writing several songs (97 in this case) is that it gives you a lot of head room for a "last-minute" and cohesive change. Because the first two singles feel like they don't belong to the album, at least sonically. And I know that an album isn't forced to have the same sound/melody on all the tracks, but think about it apart from the two first singles (which couldn't get removed off the album without being a cold-hard proof of the changes). Adding this to the fact that this is "Dua Lipa," we're talking about everything she does is really cohesive, just like this album (which apart from the two singles really is). Even the cover art and visuals of each don't match the beach vibes of the album.
Suddenly, we have a last single announcement "Illusion" which finally matches the album aesthetic (visuals) and strangely reminds people of "Hallucinate" (I don't hear it, but you get it), a song from her previous project which worked really well and that "fans" claim out loud to be better. If that's good, let's twist it, give them what they want, and avoid the commercial failure, hoping that they don't connect the dots that have led to this drastic yet pleasant change from what was previously announced.
This is just my point of view, my theory. Nothing, there is a 100% true fact. If that's what happened, her ability to do a 360° artistic spin, which somehow manages to sound realistic to the average listener, is to be studied.
Now, I really enjoy the project, don't come for me, please.

everyone in the fandom thinks the same thing; the only difference is that we think the complete shift was requested by warner not herself. back when Houdini was released we could swear that the album would be titled “vertigo” and the cover would follow the red and black aesthetic. it’s such a pity because it did not help with the album commercial success and it made Dua look like a fool
@@alicepaesleme3426training season was such a terrible follow up too, and it was way too long after Houdini. The damage had already been done, but the era still could’ve been saved earlier on. Record labels never fail to show how little they actually know about the music industry. Houdini not being an instant hit shouldn’t have made them worry, the song still managed to get critical acclaim and that’s way more important than numbers, but of course the big machines are too dense to know that.
What she should have done is just released the damn album the way she had planned too. There was no need for her to “course correct” because a( clearly it didn’t work and b( it caused delays which is always a bad bad sign in any media release (like movies) and almost at never bodes well. They should’ve just taken the hit, released Vertigo and whatever that was going to be and let it slightly underperform, and then abandon it as soon as they can so Dua can move on and try again with a better album.
Instead. Chaining her to this era created that unrealistic hype.
I wish Warner knew that Dua could still have a hit era, even if Houdini wasn’t the smash hit lead single. If you really think about it, her previous two eras had a really front loaded lead single that only performed well because of all the promo (New Rules is almost entirely forgotten, and Don’t Start Now was only a hit because of Tik Tok and COVID) the “real” hits from those eras were “One Kiss” and of course, Levitating. Those songs naturally became hits and I bet that one of the songs on RO or whatever the original tracklist looked like could’ve been the same and had a more organic “hit” had they just let it play out

Dance The Night represented radical optimism much better. She should've chosen that direction, it's what she does best. The new album is kind of murky.

i like this album for what it is for sure, i do love a fun, summery background album. however, it's clear that the album went through several shifts and edits behind the scenes and i suspect the original album we would have gotten with the sound of Houdini and Training Season would've been much better.

Lmao blur and oasis WHERE 😂 don’t get me wrong I like Dua, but I’m also a huge fan of blur and massive attack and a so so oasis fan. Here in the UK especially these are major iconic artists.
Seeing your album is going to be inspired by artist like that and then not delivering at all is definitely a letdown.
I have a feeling that they might have wanted to do a Kylie Minogue - Impossible Princess and then did a 180 ? (that album, btw, did really bad because it was so different - Dua's same trap with fans' expectations)
I think despite actually enjoying the album, it makes sense why people were disappointed because they didn't get what they were promised and the whole rollout was just kinda messy
I think when it comes to modern day pop stars, she’s among the best.
People can say what they want about this new era but it's her first album that I didn't skip a single track. For me it's a 10/10 experience considering I don't like her other songs that much. I think this is an album that has better lyrics, great verses, and the vibe matches the album cover.

How come most listeners at first place and play are comparing this to future nostalgia(which still is individual body of work and similiar to Radical Optimism) and this one is giving pop,pshychedelia,dance,disco,ballads. I don't know like... all Future nostalgia had as massive hit was levitating which was not the best song in album anyway,at least for me,cause I loved physical and that kind of woman,but this album I feel like all songs are equally good. My fav are falling forever(vocals served,beat served). Maria(production at its finest) french exit(lyrics and production are amazing) so I think this album is not anyway worse than Future nostalgia. I give it 8.5 out of 10. The thing is promotion was not goot and that's it and also the fact that this whole album campaign was streched to 6 month till album came... too much people did not want to keep up with it.

This album is for the older listeners. I can already tell that who likes it is a bit more mature. But gets to sometimes be a bit negative with so much fussing about relationships. Also, Houdini seems to have an atypical rhythm (5-8-5.. measures) and it might not catch up as easily or sound friendly to young ears. Training season also has a different pace from mainstream hits. I am just counting now.. It's surely not 4x4 (4 to the floor) as it's set to the guitar riff

If we're lucky, perhaps...some actual psychedelic, rave, trip-hop and Britpop-inspired songs were recorded but left off the album to be released (or leaked) later on at some point as bonus content. Or we'll get some wildly creative and amazing remixes.
If we're about to get the remix album of it like "Club Future Nostalgia" was, then if it's going to have what you have described, then it could also have some cool goa and psy-trance remixes as well.

Training Season and Illusion at least, were also released as acapellas, giving producers an easy way to remix them ! Good for promotion. So, remix ahoy ! As for the psychedelia/rave, I did hear a 303 on one of the songs, but I forgot on which 😂 The album is surely more Ibiza than FN

I completely disagree. I think it is a cohesive record, with nice production and lyrics. Granted, the execution is questionable, because to be honest I would've chosen completely different songs as singles over the three that she released, plus it was obvious that something was going on behind the scenes, given the timing of the singles release. She released Houdini way too early or maybe she released Radical Optimism way too late. I guess the decision came to be, because they didn't want Dua to release an album at the same time as Taylor's TTPD....
Houdini is the BEST Dua Lipa song for me, truste me, it will be a memorable part of her career and the lyrics just hot

When I was listening to the whole album I felt like it was all over the place and also was very confused about the "aesthetics" but as a whole, I enjoyed the album.

Dua’s in her 10th house Saturn return so it only makes sense that the decisions she made to fire her team and hire her dad have lasting consequences for her career. She’s coasted off of being that girl with the cute disco bops for too long and I want more for her. This album was very bland, department store jingles.
I have listened to Radical Optimism and, as a FN 'h@ter' 😂 (only liked 5 songs and it felt regressive), I want to say..
The songs' orchestration on RO is quality. I found no 'bad'/boring one. They did have retro elements, but mostly used them with a modern effect (finally ! ). The pace is faster on the upbeat songs, making them more danceable and they are fresher than what FN offered.
The singles so far had drawn my attention, there is no bad or lazy single. 'Houdini' reels you in, like it or not.
The songs on the album are well structured, not half abandoned and bland/repetitive, and, for instance, 'French Exit' is so so polished ! I'd love to hear that one on the radio. It could be the gem of the album. It has a bit of an oriental influence and is sooo good on the ears !
'End of an era' is another one that you can consider a summery/holiday song, but in the best way. 'Illusion', too. I can see these last 2 played in the clubs also for older people to enjoy, Ibiza and the rest. 'Maria', too.
By the way, I am not hearing influences of britpop, triphop or any of the bands they had mentioned, but I can hear a bit of Sophie Ellis Bextor on 'End of an era' - British, not as well known, but still, a disco-pop artist.
The influence of the Tame Impala guy is audible by some more string elements in the arrangements, some songs being more moody, more room for experimentation, but, make no mistake, still in the confines of a quite safe pop record - It seems that this is what Dua wants to do.
'These Walls' is clearly indie inspired. A good song that made me sad :(
'Whatcha Doing' sounds like a leftover from FN, funk is present here, but it does have an indie touch and sounds better than most FN songs to me. 'Falling forever' has that same dusty 80s obsession as 'Physical' did. Ugh.
'Maria' could have also fit well on FN, it does fit the disco theme, but is modern and catchy enough and faster paced.
But ! Marketing does play a lot into an album's success and I like that people are discussing these aspects (marketing, strategies) over here.
When people like me say this/that thing is good.. It might not mean that it will sell, too..
Because it might not be as approachable to the general public.
Where FN went better was, indeed, the tone and optimism of the lyrics in comparison and the cohesiveness (I think someone else mentioned that).
While listening to Radical Optimism, I did get tired at one point because the lyrics were so personal and sometimes negative. FN does not have that. And there are many genre switches on RO.
Someone said that this album is more like Dua's first album (that I loved ! The indie and lyrical aspect of it and her voice having more space to breathe)
I'd say this album is a hybrid of the first two, plus some moodier (not darker) songs. I would have liked some more upbeat songs on the album similar to Houdini and Illusion, but it was not the case

She made three hits off that album(all of them released as singles): Houdini, Training Seasons n, and Illusion. None of the other tracks came close to the quality of those. Not a single one. In “Future Nostalgia”, almost all were hits, and each one was different but had the same energy and quality that proceeded the other.
What happens when you have no artistic identity which is really only achievable if you have a large hand in writing your own songs

I totally thing that she is not fully committed to something tangible and clear and feels really samey and safe and there is no clear art direction or intention so it makes it stand out even less im not sure whats the point of the whole album or aesthetic is it feels all over the place and too shallow
the three singles represent all the songs imo;
1) instant favs - Houdini, Falling Forever
2) huge/fast growers - Training Season, End Of An Era
(these are my Top 4 from the album btw)
3) songs i don't ADORE but really like - Illusion and pretty much all of the others
overall i do think that it is a great album, and that the branding and hype/describing of it at the beggining killed it. I myself did not care much, but it would've been much better if the branding was not dark at the beggining and also described as psychadelic. One thing i wish, is that it was more of exacly that. Dark and psychadelic. When i saw the album cover and Illusion MV... i lost hope of that...
