18” of manifold pressure, my God that’s idling. That is one fast single engine piston aircraft. Nice bird. Thanks for showing the panel. Cheers from Akron, Ohio
My dad just sold his comanche 400 that he had for 15 years. Lots of great memories. Might have to track it down in the future and by it back. Hard to beat the performance.
@@P_double_H Yes I know he said that. That wasn't actually the case. I had asked him to keep it but he said he wanted to sell it. So I suggested if he was to sell it that he should go ahead and get a taildragger to replace it.
I flew my dad's PA24-250, and it was a rocket at 250 HP. I did my first cross-country in the Comanche and contrary to my hesitancy at first, it went all too fast. Amazing 4-seater. The only problem I had was the roughness of the brakes upon landing...seemed like the instruments would pop out of the panel any second, but never did. Earlier this year I did a search on his plane number and the plane crashed in one of the Great Lakes 6 months after Dad sold it.
Hi Gary, have I read that correctly 18 USG/Hr? 0:24 Edit - saw the electronic Fuel Flow meter at 17USG/Hr - thought she was a thristy bird until I realised she's an 8 cylinder! Nice! 😎
ya that’s like 60% power or something. 75% is 20 gph or more. takeoff climb from sea level is really bonkers. like you can hit 40 gph at full rich wide open throttle near sea level.
@@boobtubeboob Doesn't sound bad? The Cherokee Six I used to fly would cruise at 15gph and could suck just over 20gph full rich on take off and climb out! And it only cruised at around 130Kn! Give me that plane anytime, but with 8 cylinders do you find the maintenance is a bit heavy?
Let me get this straight. You are claiming that you can do 210 mph true (182 knots) on 8.5 gph. What type of mooney is this and what is your useful load?

Even low RPM has a high fuel burn having 8 cylinders though 😅
@@a1xcamp The video shows the panel with airspeed and shadin fuel flow. Fuel burn per distance is not too bad. True adjusted airspeed looks like 210.
18 inches is all you’re going to get at that altitude in a normally aspirated engine.
@@el-blake-o4766 naturally****** there's nothing abnormal about forced induction, thank you very much!
there is an stc for twin ray jay turbos. but it’s rather expensive.

Your dad stated you asked him to sell it to buy a tail dragger.

Wonderful bird, Gary. That panel is immaculate. And that engine sound...oh my.
This thing has an 11.8L engine. Flat-8. What a beast.
I should rename this "My Comanche is Faster than your Mooney."
the other day I took her out. I was running 195 kts true at 6500 feet. 2400 rpm and wide open throttle (probably like 80% power).
Very nice video clip!! I,m from the old school so the 400 Comanche is a Beauty !! 8 cylinders under the Cawling Tops everything !!
What a sound!!! Wow...we cannot thank you enough for this video!
Based on 13k ft, 32 deg F and 148kias, it looks like 185kts true. Nice. That is also thanks to that beautiful long wing for high altitude performance.
gotta love that 170 mph *indicated* baby.
The sound of the IO720 - not to mention what it's in - fantastic!
Nice panel! Love this plane.
Good thing he has a radar detector on the dash with such speeds!
Flew one pilot service around 1979. I think they had me fly it cause I was the only guy who could get it started when hot....
oddly i never have hot start issues.
Wow so fast! Comanche 400s are so rare
Clean machine!
Best title ever!
Nice plane.
What year and number 400 is this? My old man has the number 97 (I'm located in in Australia). Looks like a very tidy aircraft.
Beautiful
I only clicked on this because it said hauling balls
Same 😂👌
Those 400's haul ass with their 400 ponies under the cowling
214 knots GS :D
Nice 👍
nice journey
Hell, I can do this in my Chieftain, and on only 40 gallons per hour LOL
"hauling balls" hahah
IO-720 bad ass
How often does ATC mistakenly call you Twin Comanche? The 400's groundspeed is impressive.
It does happen from time to time.
@@boobtubeboob They used to call my dads Cessna Centurion twin Cessna all the time. Your 400 is a real beauty.
About the same mpg as my pickup at 65mph. Id take it.
That ground speed was pretty impressive considering the low indicated airspeed.
quinnjim 210 mph (182 knots) true airspeed
I misread your altimeter. I thought you were at 3,000' indicating 150 knots. You were at 13,000'. BIG difference.

Nice but The 260B Could go just as fast and carry 6 people. Not 6 people very far mind you but it could.
Where are these balls you're hauling? Are they in the back? Are they in an undercarriage compartment?
atop the driver's seat.
I get that in my Mooney @ 8.5 gal an hr.
Ya but i can carry 600 lbs of people and shit along with my 800 lbs of fuel.
Gary Baker you’ll need that 800lbs of fuel and more to go anywhere near where a Mooney could go on the same amount.
Let me get this straight. You are claiming that you can do 210 mph true (182 knots) on 8.5 gph. What type of mooney is this and what is your useful load?
Gary Baker M20k 8.5-10. You should trade in that gas hog you have now and get one😎👍
how high do you have to go to get those speeds?
