      If you want to know what it (really) should sound like, have a listen at the interpretation of the late Gustav Leonhardt on harpsichord.
      His “interpretation” is closest to taking the musician out of the equation, IMHO. The result is listening to pure music.
      If you’re not familiar with harpsichord, you might have to get used to that, though. Some people, like me, are hooked in an instant, others never get the hang of it.
      All in all, this (her) interpretation, on piano(!), comes very close to ideal. Almost, almost(!), no personal interpretation, just letting the music flow. That is how it should be.
      Very good. I want to listen to more of her, to see (hear) how she plays the other pieces. I can only hope for more like this.

  • @Marewig
    @Marewig 2 года назад +12

    Wow, the emotion evoked in the phrasing! Moving, but still subtle enough to never overwhelm the overall rhythm that remains highly structured. This way, the essence of baroque music is retained. I've played the guitar arrangement of a different prelude years ago, but that advice on retaining the baroque soul of the piece still stayed with me.

Instead of trying to imitate a harpsichord with a piano and/or channel Franz Lizst playing Bach, you just hit "the notes at the right time", as Bach himself used to say, and the beautiful music showed itself. THank you I thoroughly enjoyed this. A rising younger generation of pianists has challenged Glen Gould's exclusive right tp play Bach on the piano. But I will always love him and his unique legacy.

      Glenn Gould never had the exclusive rights to play Bach. Yes, he was, and probably is, unique in a sense, but not in a way that gave him “the exclusive rights”.
      I can see were you come from though. Once you’ve heard something a certain way, it’s very, very hard to unhear it. Other interpretations, no matter how good they are, will then always seem less than the way you heard it the first time.
