► About Today's Location
Elizabeth is an outer northern suburb of the Adelaide metropolitan area, South Australia, 24 km north of the Adelaide city centre. It is located in the City of Playford. At the 2021 census, Elizabeth had a population of 40,323 with a median age of 35.
Established in 1955, it was the seat of the former local government body, the Old City of Elizabeth, which included Elizabeth as well as the immediately adjacent suburbs on all sides except the west. Although the City of Elizabeth no longer exists, having been amalgamated into the much larger City of Playford in 1997, the term "Elizabeth", in the context of Adelaide, typically refers to the historic municipality and the distinct community therein.
Before the 1950s, most of the area surrounding today's suburb of Elizabeth was farming land. After the end of the Second World War with its shortage of materials, the state government decided that South Australia needed to grow and become industrialised. A satellite city was planned for northern metropolitan fringe of Adelaide between the existing townships of Salisbury and Smithfield. The South Australian Housing Trust initiated a housing development program in the area, with a purchase of 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) at the site of the present suburb.
The township (now suburb) of Elizabeth was established on 16 November 1955, being named after Queen Elizabeth II, former queen of Australia, and inaugurated by Sir Thomas Playford, who was then premier of South Australia.
In 1958, Playford negotiated with General Motors to build a Holden factory in Elizabeth, known as the Holden Elizabeth Plant, which employed thousands of people and drew more people to live here. Queen Elizabeth visited the suburb in 1963.
The town council was briefly renamed the District Council of Salisbury and Elizabeth on 22 August 1963. On 13 February 1964, a new local government body, the municipality of Elizabeth, later called City of Elizabeth, was created by severance from the District Council of Salisbury.
In 2017 the Holden factory closed down, causing a rise in unemployment and increased disadvantage in the suburb.
Elizabeth had a reputation as being a tough place to grow up in, and Jimmy Barnes reported a gang culture. However, in recent years there has been a kind of ownership of the "shitty character" of the suburb.

where I grew up and walked as a child 1960-1972...My parents ran The Celebrity Coffee Lounge from 1963-1972. So much fun.
++++++++++FERAL CITY+++😵💫👍+++++++
Every city has it's feral areas. There are actually worse places in Australia.
Ignoramus!
Doesn't look like Elizabeth has changed much in 40 years. Thanks for the walk around 👍
No worries. Thanks for watching. 👍
Looks like a new Library since I have last been there
Gee..new buildings..I have not seen that Fasta Pasta area...
and a big New multi story parking area on corner of main North road...must be planning more building in that area...
I came here from a 1960s promotional video on this area. The comments led me to believe it was going to look like something from 'Escape from New York' ! This place looks nice!
Yes, it has a bad reputation but things are not so bad these days. There are definitely worse places. Like this: ruclips.net/video/1AgIzhebYgk/видео.html Thanks for watching.
I’ve been a maintenance contractor In Elizabeth for over 10 years now. People are friendly and kind say Gday when they walk by. Better than you get where I live in Norwood.
I worked on the construction of the new(-ish) railway station and found the people to be friendly too.
Cool video. Thank you for posting 🙏
My pleasure
The Shedley and Octagon Theatre area..
KFC still in same spot from 1972!!!
Same fryer too!
Got here after watching the now iconic Elizabeth the place to grow from the 60s.
Not many surprises there, propaganda like material which was meant to promote the place to migrants. Did it present an utopian reality, maybe but it offered a new reality to new ustralians, people who were chasing a dream of their own. The English from some of the most depressed urban conditions in Europe as well the Dutch who hailed from the most well catered and developed cities.
What struck me was most of
the comments of the whingers who portrayed today's Elizabeth as a crime ridden, hell-hole. They need to get a life. I realise that your video is not representative of the whole of Elizabeth. It looks no better or worse than most local areas in Australia.
If you want to be shocked, watch some of the videos from any place in the US or Western Europe covered in graffiti and worse. You ain't seen nothing yet. Be grateful that you're living in OZ*, I've been calling Australia home for 43 years. It's certainly not perfect, especially with the housing crisis and the homeless, it's nowhere near as bad as it is overseas.
I couldn't agree more. Thanks for watching.
Very true I am of Dutch and English background first generation Australian born in Elizabeth East Blackburn Rd
I just came here after seeing that same video. Yeh... too much whinging and emphisising the trouble spots of Elizabeth, when there always have been, and still are, many attractive streets and houses, and well kept by the owners. The city centre and council area shown here have always been a pleasure to visit.
This is not the Elizabeth I grew up in.
