From the UK, 🇬🇧 Never met him, I only know what I have read over the years but, he came across as a genuine guy. Completely different attitude and approach from all previous Russian presidents. I actually felt trust in him when he spoke, he appeared approachable and human. He also wasn't feeding me with the familiar Russian propaganda which constantly spews out of Russian politics, and Putin maintains up to the present day. He was like a breath of fresh air, which was/ is badly needed in the east.

    • @Soundcloud765

He was a hypocrite when it came to act in Soviet Republics resolving the conflict between Kremlin and Azerbaijani authority before the collapse of the SU.Instead of resolving the disagreements in a peaceful and mutually respectful way he sent Soviet Army troops to Azerbaijan to regain the Soviet regime there. As a result hundreds of innocent, 147unarmed citizens in Baku capital were killed in one day and smashed under the tanks sent by Kremlin to "resolve the problems"... 744 innocent citizens of Baku were injured. Almost 1000 people, just imagine the scale of violence in one single day ! Unarmed people against tanks and Kalashnicov's guns of fully equipped Soviet Army! It happened on the streets of Baku on 20 January 1990. Same scenario happened in Georgia. He was famous in the SU by double standards when it was about other nations within the SU.Incompetent hypocrite he was. People would forgive him the economical chaos if he was persistent in what he preached but no, within the USSR his authority acted as tyrants.Only when he was pushed to corner he gave up.His double standards are detected. When Azerbaijanis of Armenia in 1988 who lived compactly at that time in Zangazur area in Armenia were ethnically cleansed and pushed to Azerbaijani Republic, his government deliberately ignored it and put a blind eye to what turned then into a bloody conflict around Karabakh. He was a man whose personal contacts, likes and dislikes overpowered political professionalism to deal with the conflicts inside the Soviet Union.

Taking this opportunity, I compare the process of radical opening led by M. Gorbachev with the timid and moderate opening led by N. Khrushchev. That is why, while Khrushchev's opening is historically defined as a de-Stalinization, Gorbachev's would have implied - for me - a kind of "de-Leninization" of the Soviet state, to the point where the U.S.S.R (created by Lenin) ceased to exist.
Unfortunately, the rapprochement between Moscow and Washington that began in the time of Reagan and Gorbachev suffered a gradual setback after the Clinton administration.

    A TRIBUTE TO GORBACHEV
    He had the absolute power
to destroy the lives of ordinary people.
He even had the power to destroy the world many times over.
He was worshipped like a demigod and
his command was obeyed like the word of god.
He had reached the point in his life where
nobody could question or disobey him...
    but,
instead of abusing his power like his predecessors
He chose to use that power to serve mankind.
He chose humanity over despotism and
    chose peace over war.
He saw people as equal to himself and
realised that people have as many rights as he does.
He felt the pain and suffering of ordinary people and
chose to change the demonic system
by giving people rights to live as free men...
It was his moral courage and his wisdom that made him take on the establishment knowing full well that he might end up paying the price with his life, and the total destruction of his family.
But he risked everything for a just cause.
I SALUTE TO HIS COURAGE, HIS WISDOM, AND HIS HUMANITY.

A good man no doubt, unfortunately he trusted the Americans which is an extremely unwise thing to do, the chance was there to make the planet a safer place to live for generations to come but the US just seen it as another opportunity....sad really.

Его в могилу провожал насмешек шквал,
    Иные хохотали просто бешено,
    И только я, один лишь я рыдал,
Я так мечтал узреть его повешенным.
    Here richly, with ridiculous display,
The Politician's corpse was laid away.
While all of his acquaintance sneered and slanged
I wept: for I had longed to see him hanged.

Don’t make me laugh, the Soviet Union was a failure from the start! It was a miserable grey empire that enslaved its citizens and those of other countries. The Soviet Union will go down in human history along with that of Communist China as one of the most miserable and unjust periods ever!
