The sad thing is, when you look back on it, if BG3 had kept the initial September release date to iron out some things, it probably would've done just fine overall. Yeah, the initial release of both games could make things more competitive, but BG3 would've still come out on top full stop. It'd probably be even better with the extra month.

One of the problems is that people continue to moan and complain that Bethesda didn't make the original games as if they're kidnappers holding the franchise for ransom. It's ok for them to be critical, but they really need to move on from that and provide more useful feedback. These day people have played 3, 4, Morrowind, Skyrim and probably enjoyed some of them. But then they're also the same people regurgitating the same nonsense about New Vegas, or Todd Howard being jealous of it or some such. People of the community really need to have an original thought of their own if they want to see the franchise improve. Odds are most of them have never played the original games and are just complaining about it because everyone else they know is. Bandwagoning without adding anything useful is creating more of a problem than a bad studio ever will. It dilutes the voices that could actually help the industry. This is something I hope people become aware of.

While that certainly still means profit for Bethesda, also consider how many people that means tried the original content and left.
EDIT: I'd also counterpoint what Josh Sawyer said with similarly opposing anecdotes from Nate Purkeypile, another dev who used to work at Bethesda. Their statement was that while the engine makes what it was expressly built for easy to do, a lot of things were difficult to expand upon. This was something corroborated by even Josh Sawyer himself during interviews about developing facets of New Vegas, like the limitations imposed on trying to make the various tribes in Honest Hearts and inability to add diversity to the NPCs without revisions they couldn't afford to do.

Bethesda shouldnt earn a cent from the modders hard work, especially since they dont even make sure the package works before shipping it as a "creation". Also $10 for a *single* *shitty* quest is outrageous. (Yes it is only 700 credits but the smallest pack you can buy that has enough credits is $10) The game is in a terrible state and instead of fixing the fundamental problems (bad narrative, boring exploration, and a useless, unfun outpost system hanging off like a vestigial limb) Bethesda is more concerned about nickel and diming players to milk them for all theyre worth. @@thegamedoctor1457 I enjoyed the game. I am not paying for any mod, as I don't see how it's forced upon me. It is not at all. If you didn't enjoy the game I can see how you'd like them to fix things instead of this BUT, almost no other company especially for AAA games allows mods on consoles. They want you to pay for every single Assassins Creed and COD rather than giving you the ability to download FREE content.
Working to bring mods on consoles SHOULD be standard for most games, but they don't because they want you to buy their next title instead of you having the option to download infinite free content and play the same game for years and years. Bethesda instead chose to do it and I don't care if they charge for some mods to recoup that cost as long as people can keep making mods for free and console players downloading free content. I really don't get the outrage. Suddenly a "mediocre" game has a modding community on consoles which will only bring more worth out of your 60 dollars and will allow all people who own it to keep playing and playing and playing new content that you don't even have to pay for and you're complaining.
I WISH i had the option to download free content for Elden Ring but instead i'm forced to wait 2 years for an official DLC that costs 30 dollars. With Starfield I don't even have to wait for bethesda to release a DLC when I can just grab whatever free mission people will build. And you're all outraged over a $7 mission. Just do whatever you do in real life when you see something that isn't worth it, don't buy it and move on. I am not gonna pay for any mod and I'm on PC so this doesn't affect me TO THE SLIGHTEST, but I get that Bethesda wants to recoup some money for bringing mods to console when no other company does it. You all are just a hive mind, instead of actually thinking WHO this benefits more(the player or bethesda) you're outraged over a $7 mission that you don't even have to buy, you're not forced to buy it and you even claim it's not worth it, so what's the big deal? Just download the free missions which are better.

So, at this point bethsda should just make the games, make sure its a complete game, make a story DLC with worth while content, and then just relase the game to the mod makers. not this ideer of constant support, like its a live service. its a singeplayer game, let it be a single player game.

I reached out to Bethesda support who confirmed this, because it does seem like a uninformative figure to track.

I think it is a weird one. I'd rather have games complete at launch. So if further things are added I don't have a problem with some of it being free and some of it being paid. I don't really understand the expectation for free things to be added to games for years.

      @@michaelh878 You're strawmanning the position.
What people want is to not be nickel & dimed or conned with the promise of a good & substantial game which falls off within a few hours. If you're adding 1 quest that was obviously cut to make the ship deadline... it should be free. Especially when the game is known for being low on content & the content being mostly bad. They should be scrambling to actually make the "good game" Bethesda convinced people they were buying.
They're verging on fraudsters trying to con you a second time before you've even forgotten the last time.
Add-on content should also be substantial enough to be worth people's attention. No one wants to make a transaction & direct their attention to Starfield again, slog through all the loading screens for a 40 minute quest in a game known for all the quests being bad... then shut the game off and transition to something else.
Better to just go straight to something else & not suffer the frustration of all the extraneous problems of Starfield & purchasing... even ignoring the actual monetary amount.

It is also not increasing the value of a cosmetic. It is drastically inflating the cost of gameplay.
If I paid for a AAA game, and they decide to offer me a new outfit for a few bucks, I can safely ignore it unless it's just so cool I must wear it. I can still play the entire game. If they offer me a quest for 7 dollars, I am missing out on gameplay, which is actually what I'm here for, unless I buy. It is very different.

There is much to criticize about Starfield, but I think it still has the foundations to become something really great when they start to put work into the right things. Imho they need to advance the random exploration gameplay-loop, a key feature of all their games. They should have a small team constantly working on more POI's so that at some point you rarely stumble into the same things when exploring a planet. As well as adding more reasons to go and explore on your own.
But I also found out they are already working on moving beyond map borders on a planet which will put you into the next tile with more to explore. This can only be accessed by adding a command in a setup file on pc, and is work in progress, starting to bug out after moving too far from where you started.

Developing a new engine likely will cost Bethesda over half a billion dollars. At least one as fully featured/modable as the one that exists now... not likely at a time where the whole industry is contracting and consolidating to be competitive. and.. that cost will bleed into the unit price of future titles and more aggressive monetization.
