  • In this video, we take a look at performance cars from the 1980s that you might have forgotten about or maybe didn’t even know existed.
Muscle Cars had all but become extinct by the times the 1980s rolled around, but there were some performance cars being sold that weren’t by definition true muscle cars but instead carried on their spirit and even included good handling characteristics as well as some pep under the hood.
These are in no particular order, so let’s spend a few minutes going back to the automotive world of the 1980s to see what that decade had to offer.

A shame about the Fiero. That 88 model is beautiful and really does seem like they were going somewhere with it. I miss Pontiac.

The 1986 Buick Grand National is my favorite. I’m building one now.

GLHS Intercooled Omni. Always been a Mopar guy, and this little unassuming hatchback just got my attention during high school.

Why does GM always kill off a car right when they're perfecting it? The Fiero was great. Even when it first came out.

My favourite 80s car was my 1986 Merkur XR4TI. It was the underpinnings of the Mustang SVO with the body of the European Ford Sierra.
It was quick and fast for the time and looked so weird that people were confused.
Mine was frighteningly fast, satisfyingly quick and made blasts on twisty roads an absolute event.
I miss mine even though it had the wrong spark plugs.

The original Fiero was made by putting the front end of a Chevette and the front end of a Sunbird on either side of the passenger compartment.
It was a brilliant idea, no less of a bad idea as Porsche basing it's top performers off the Beetle.

Owned an '89 Formula 350. Fastest car I ever owned. Faster than the '94 Corvette I still have in the garage. Motor would twist the unibody and the steering wheel took a light touch as it would head for the ditch when you let off the gas. I got used to that. 0 to 100mph in about 10 seconds. Nice nice power band from 2000rpm to about 4500rpm. You could wind it up harder but that mid range was where the power was at. Loved chirping the tires on the 1-2 shift... nice and easy like it happened by accident. It would accidentally spin the tires if you took off from a stop light in a hurry. Drove it hard for over 5 years and never broke anything.

GM should have allowed Pontiac to release the 1990 Fiero. I think it would have sold well.

I would still love to have one. I really want an 88 GT manual, but I'd take a base 84 automatic. I want to rebuild it anyway

Swap the engine for a Kawasaki H2R. Then it's really fast.
