Whatever little petty medical or financial "problems" I am having, just listening to what these men went through in 1944, puts everything into perspective!

@ 41:52 Sherman Oyler was one of my teachers in High School and told his story in class. He was a true teacher of living history. My friend mowed his yard, and I went over to his house one time. He had a 3' display case of German artifacts he had brought back from the war. He got a kick out of it when this 16 year old kid brought in a copy of Spike Jones' Der Fuehrer's Face. I got extra credit for listening to Dr. Demento, lol. He was really passionate about teaching history.

Fascinating! My 6th grade teacher in 1980-1 immigrated from Czechoslavakia after the war, and I know now from others who had him earlier that his not covering WW2 except in a 3-part filmstrip the last 3 days of school was consistent, and he may have had PTSD that kept him from feeling comfortable talking about the war. However, he covered the American revolution very extensively, and you could just feel his intense love of freedom. I sometimes wonder if he was even in some sort of resistance. He'd have been old enough to be called to fight when Germany took the rest of the country after the Sudetenland crisis. (He also played the final part of the filmstrip first - did they really send the strip in the wrong order, or did that help him remember that he was safe?)

It’s wonderful that you two guys had first hand history taught to you. A real privilege. As you say, living history. I too love it, but sadly in the UK too many of us in the 1970s never had any exposure to these events. They were laughed off as too recent. Instead we were subjected to the tedious Tudors of 1500s!
