DCS 2020 | HARRIER EASY AIR-TO-AIR REFUELING [TUTORIAL]

- How to refuel the AV-8B Harrier off all tankers in DCS World.
The difficulty is mainly due to the probe being so far back relative to the pilot's point of view.
For non-VR simmers, looking at the basket as it gets closer is a sure way to lose track of the tanker and mess up the formation flying, and therefore, the connection.
This can be mitigated by using a set of visual references detailed here.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! After many hours struggling AAR in the Harrier, with these techniques, I got it first try and every time after that consistently... AAR in the harrier might actually be easy now
I am thrilled! Enjoy that sweet aviation kerosene! 😁
🍺🍺 Here's to the lost tankers gunned down in anger. lmao.
Good procedure 👍
You did it almost like what real harrier pilot did 👍
Thanks for the tutorial
No problem 👍
You’re a life saver! I would’ve been fired and probably go to jail because i failed aerial refueling and damaged the jet. Thank you so much!
Best vid on refuelling I’ve seen, glad I’m not the only one who has shot down the tanker in frustration!.
You haven't played DCS if you haven't shot down at least a dozen tankers!
How fine your movements are on this and the hovering video are astounding
I'm a guy who likes to learn my own methods, but this is certainly useful as the more knowledge the better
I don't have VR or Head Tracking, and this helps a lot!
Glad to help! Hope the frustration level went down a notch :)
same as below, many attempts without even contact - following your method - success - many thanks.
Awesome tutorial. Been pulling what's left of my hair out with the Harrier air refuelling training mission lol. The Marine Corps hymn at the end was a brilliant touch :)
I hope it will be helpful. Let me know if you managed to do it with these visual aids. 😉
Yeah... I've just taken to taking four bags, a pair of sidearms and a tpod and called myself AFAC!
Thanks for adding each specific aircraft, especially the S-3B :)
You're welcome!
I've been AAR the harrier consistently for about a week now and its gotten easier each time, however these aiming markers are gonna make initial contact so much easier! Thanks.
Hope this will work for you!
Thanks, I was hoping to know reference points and even slight rpm adjustments, you made my day with this!
Glad I could help!
@@CommanderSteinsch yep, first attempt allowed me to get to the drogue, and stay on for about 30 seconds. Haha
Excellent! Keep at it 🥳
i just found your channel and i love your Videos so much. They helped me alot to become a better harrier Pilot
Thanks so much. I had given up until I saw this and now I have finally got it done. ;)
Great job!
My heart rate went up just watching this.
This is great video. No talking bullshit for an hour, just plain and simple.
Thank you.
It's always a fine line to walk between giving too much information and not enough. In the end, you'll always have someone complaining, that can't be helped as we all have different expectations. :)
The best refueling video on the internet!
best tutorial hands down.
while flying VR, I struggle to focus on the left upper corner of the HUD, maybe some stereo vision issues.
This! I have been restricting myself to taking extra bags or not straying far from the Tarawa because I haven’t been able to AAR, I’ll give this method a try when I finish work today 👍
Have you been able to plug? 😃
@@CommanderSteinsch i actually got distracted after work editing a DCS video so ill have to try today 😅👍
That was great. Still won't be able to do it but you've given me a chance :)
Practicing is key. Don't give up, we've all been there! :)
Very, very useful. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great Tutorial. This will help a lot. I am wondering if you put in some curves/axis tune for the Harrier? I think it responds so quickly that I often have difficulties doing small corrections.
Yep, 20 on X and Y axes for the Harrier.
excellent tuto thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Beautifully done.
Thank you very much!
The bottom line is: nice and easy. Always!
Absolutely!
What is the radio contact number? 144.?
Can you add a video on how to land on the Tarawa?
Absolutely. That's on the to-do list! :)
Lol, what Voodoo magic are you performing to fly so steady behind that tanker :)
Haha! Hours and hours of frustration paying off. 🤣
adjust your axis curves in the controls and make sure you use AFC(switch needs to go forward to set it). I was all over the place trying it earlier. I played around in free flight with these settings and gained a ton of stability. I feel like I can attempt AARF better now that I"ve figured that out. Ran out of time tonight :(
@@danielsmith9818 What game are you guys playing? The afc in my jet is fucking useless and usually ends up drifting me 20 metres left and completely fucking up my pitch trim. Not to mention floating right like on the video wouldn't be possible while using it because it would end up fighting you back into the last position..
What it means for comm menu to be greyed out?
I don't know.
The Mirage is still missing from the Easy AAR video collection ;)
Haha, true. I just think the Mirage is among the easiest planes to refuel in DCS. I'm not sure what I could add over other tutorials already available. :)
@@CommanderSteinsch I agree, it's its easy as long as you keep your inputs small. If you pull the stick slightly too hard you could easily lose 10 knots in a moment with the big delta wing... I've noticed that you keep the throttle steady most of the time and only add or remove small increments. I've picked the same style (probably because I've started with the auto-throttle on the Su-33). Other youtubers advice to move the throttle frequently and "modulate" bigger movements by constantly changing the direction, which feels a bit unnatural to me...
I have a light touch with the throttle during AAR. I don't rest my hand on it, but manage it with the tip of my fingers. I feel it's much more precise, especially if you can easily measure your input by monitoring the RPM gauge or flowmeter (after some time these are not needed but once you start on a new plane, it can be very helpful).
I believe real life pilots enjoy throttles with a longer travel, allowing them to be more precise than the common simmer.
great vid bro
Thanks. Glad you're still here! :)
Can you add the link to this skin please? Looks amazing!!!
Sure thing! In the video description now.
It's a genuine impossibility, it can't be done.
How did you guess that we've shot down those tankers?? 🤣🤣
Haha! Been there, done that!
Back in Falcon 4.0 that was standard ops for me! Never did get the hang of it. After hours of practice in DCS, I’ve pretty much got the hang of it, but getting into contact in the Harrier is definitely the toughest of the ones I’ve tried.
WHO IN THE GODDAMN PUT THE REFUELING PROBE THERE?!?!
A twisted mind!
The engineers at McDonnel Douglas
Your a fucking legend
I'm a real pilot and I can't fly that steady in DCS. Maybe if I turn my curves up to 75. 🤔
Will also depend on your hardware and how fast you can adapt between real pilot and simmer modes
I only clicked on this video because you used my livery.
Which is awesome!
@@CommanderSteinsch Thanks. It was made for mudspike forum After Action Report thingy and they let me release it.. Without the mudspike logos of course.
Drogue.
