FILM DESCRIPTION:
During World War II, a dilapidated vessel, the Caine, gets a new ensign, Willis Keith (Robert Francis), and a new captain, Commander Queeg (Humphrey Bogart). The crew sees Queeg's unconventional behavior as irrational, and communications officer Thomas Keefer (Fred MacMurray) spreads suspicion about his suitability as captain. When a dire situation during a storm forces the executive officer (Van Johnson) to relieve Queeg of his duties, he and Ensign Keith are tried for mutiny.

A very tightly wrapped film.
The script was terse and direct.
It has the aura of a stage drama. The acting is restrained and contained.
A simply wonderful piece of cinema.
The best and most shocking example for Queeg's incompetence.
The USS Caine both Could-have and Should-Have engaged the Japanese shore batteries by opening fire with her forward 5-inch turret guns...especially getting close to 1,000-yards of the shoreline. Those landing craft were vulnerable against the same Japanese artillery once the USS Caine was steering away from the shore. I am sure that, had this been a true World War II Pacific theater event, that there would have been an After-Action Review of all the performances of every involved US warship that was ordered to advance into the line-of-fire. Such an AAR would have lead to an Official Inquiry into the lackluster performance of the USS Caine at that engagement.

The U.S.S. Caine left the The Attack Group U.S.M.C. GRUNTS without Protection for their Amphibious Assault on the beach.
Keefer’s last words in the novel as he stepped off the Caine were “This is an iron poltergeist made by God to destroy my life, and it didn’t do a bad job”.
Awesome book, much better than the movie.
Keefer showed courage and fortitude here. It is a contrast to his moral cowardice later . He was a complex character ...

His integrity was constantly in check. Always having to choose between captain and duty. Here was bound to slip up sooner than later.
Keefer wanted to save his own rear end.
There was nothing complex about Keefer.
In Wouk's novel there is a scene where the Caine is hit by a kamikaze plane. Keefer is the first one to abandon ship.
What a great freakin movie. If this ever comes up on TCM, DO NOT MISS, great story, actors and direction. Highly underated, and any young movie geeks need to put on your list of top 100 movies to see before you die.🇺🇲.
Agreed. They had a special viewing of it in one of our better cinemas about 40 years ago. It was my first time watching it and loved it. Another great oldie is Away All Boats(1956)
I'd like to think Maryk went on to become a captain himself after he was cleared at the court martial. Seems like he would be a great captain: skilled, decisive, and deeply caring of the men under his command.
Sadly, he didn't. In the novel, after he was cleared, he was reassigned to command an LCI (landing craft infantry). His hopes to get into the Regular Navy were dashed.
No he would forever be marked as a mutineer even though exonerated…but I agree with your opinion of his character

Nope. Something like that follows you. It’s a career ender regardless of the outcome of the trial. No Captain is going to want you under their command. You’re going to be put in a shoreside staff duty roll until you tenure out.
@@coolcat5714 You would think that would apply to Willy Keith also, but in the novel, he does go on to command. As did Keefer.
I find it...amusing...that the shells falling around the CAINE make exactly the same noise as shells on land, as I checked by watching a couple episodes of COMBAT!
Kinda makes you wonder what he did in the Atlantic.
According to the book, and some hints in the movie, he wasn't in charge but the convoys he was apart of were constantly attacked, culminating in the destroyer he was on being sunk by a U-boat. Most of the men onboard were killed, and barely escaped with his life.
Enough to get sent to Pacific
In the book, Queeg got what he should have gotten long before, a desk job.

I will say a commander should never have to explain his decisions to the crew under him but if his poor behavior is obvious to most of his staff it should be reported properly and he would have to explain why his decisions were correct, especially if lives and/or property were lost. I would say his actions as a commander were inexcusable.
Your crew has to understand what they're doing or they'll assume incompetence on your part.
If you give an order that seems reasonable or even bold they'll likely understand. But if you give an order that seems to put you out of place or in unnecessary danger without an excuse it'll make you look like a gloryhound or an idiot.
Sometimes even a brief explanation can ease the tension.
A good commander explains his decisions to teach his subordinates so they can learn.
The commander shouldn't have to explain - however note that the commander never took the conn! At that point he should not have been issuing orders to the bridge crew.

I think it's anti-flash protectant. In modern times we have special masks that provide fire flash protection instead of this type of cream.

This should have been the real Caine Mutiny. Where Mr. Maryk relieves Captain Queeg for cowardice under fire, and takes command.
Easy to do when watching a movie...officers tend to protect other officers...so it probably wouldn't have happened.
He would have still been court martialed, but at least the situation would have been more favorable.

This scene proves Mr. Keefer was no coward. He understood the Caine's duty. Captain Queeg was shot up as a fighting man. His nerves were frayed. He had had enough. He was no coward either.
Keefer wasn't a coward in battle, but he was a coward when it came to taking responsibility and telling the truth.
id like to think that Queeg wasnt a coward either, just PTSD and in desperate need of help
The first time I watched this, I thought about when I was in the infantry and painting my face with camouflage paint and I’d think about my cousin Bobby who was in the navy and not having to paint his face, among other things army grunts do, like digging foxholes.
It's a shame that this Top 5 movie of all time never got an Oscar, only seven nominations (among other Bogey as best actor and Max Steiner for the music).
And the nomination for Steiner was not even deserving. His score is rife with frenetic chords that rarely mirror the drama and action unfolding. He added in propulsive, highly “patriotic”sounding passages that were oddly incongruous as well. How I wish Bernard Herrmann, who was at the height of his powers had scored the film instead-or at least Alfred Newman or Hugo Friedhofer anyway.
Let's make a point here in what is really a movie about the characters of men in extreme warfare conditions. First and foremost it actually is a film based upon a very good novel, but a novel. It endeavours to portray the stresses upon men in the horror of war. here we see a CO probably severely battle-scarred ( as the court martial shows) and most likely suffering from what we now call PTSD; a man who never should have been reassigned to the Caine. This reflects the USN situation of 1942/43 when ship COs were hard to find.. He replaced a CO thoroughly disliked by his officers and as the situation unfolds they transfer that dislike to the new CO at a time when they need his support. They are the real villains here as is shown in the court martial. Queeg is a professional naval officer badly flawed character thanks to his service in the North Atlantic. The others a bunch of amateurs who are still driven by their peacetime civilian standards and bread and butter course at the Academy. The XO is a total failure as he should have rapidly brought them into line (we see how the previous CO tried to make the new ensigns officers in a short time but is criticised for his efforts). Queeg is a flawed man but no coward and a man who is betrayed by his officers when he most needed them; that is almost mutiny. Just a man who saw far too much of war at its worst time. The book is one of Wouk's best but it is a psychological drama and should be seen in that light. For those who choose to discredit Queeg may I suggest you have probably never been on much more than the Staten Island Ferry as opposed to us who have been out there and learned how to work with our captains or how we had our people best work with us. End point? Bogart's superb presentation of LCDR Queeg.
I think Queeg's my way or the highway attitude also worked against him (he set the tone at the very beginning) probably caused the crew to not support him because at times Queeg rejected that support with advice during operational scenarios, here in the battle and during the typhoon they gave him suggestion on what was probably proper course of action and Queeg flat out refused and countermanded their advice with orders that seemed out of line and in the case of the typhoon orders that in all appearance would have placed the ship in grave danger. Another tick mark against Queeg the crew saw was the tow line incident where the Captain was more focused on disciplining someone for untucked shirt tails instead of paying attention to what the ship itself was doing, the helmsman tried to warn Queeg but Queeg abruptly brushed him off not even giving a single consideration as to why the bridge wanted his attention. Queeg could have dealt with the undisciplined sailor a little later after they finished the tow operation, worse yet Queeg wanted to lie as to why the tow line was cut instead of owning up to the ship's mistake. The entire crew should work as a team backing each other up with the Captain having the ultimate say but the Captain should be receptive to his officer's input, here it seems like he refused to take any input at all.
In the airlines we place a heavy emphasis on CRM (crew resource management), something that is clearly lacking on the Caine and the whole Captain is an unquestionable god attitude ended after the deadly Tenerife accident where the Captain's subordinates tried to warn him of dangers but he arrogantly brushed them off.
Maryk was not a "total failure". He supported Queeg as long as he could, and only relieved him when it became absolutely necessary. If not for Maryk, the captain most likely would have been relieved by the officers far sooner. Maryk is the real hero of this story. Honest, skilled, deeply concerned to all men above and below him in the chain of command. I'd like to think he became a captain after he was cleared at the court martial.
As for Queeg, his mental illness isn't an excuse for his terrible decisions or his repeated lying to cover up his mistakes. War trauma doesn't turn someone into a liar. Those were choices he made freely of his own will.
The previous C.O, DeVriess, was not disliked. The crew and wardroom liked him and respected him. They all chipped in to buy him a gold watch when he was detached. Only Ensign Keith, who was still a spoiled rich kid at that point, disliked DeVriess because DeVriess reprimanded Keith for a foolish blunder, and Keith sulked and smarted instead of taking it like a man. In the novel, as Keith grows up, he looks back and sees how he was wrong, and DeVriess was right.
I think in your mind Queeg is based on an officer who was "professional" but suffering from "PTSD." In this film Queeg is clearly an asshat and his CO is clearly justified. Greenwald, in the film, is a professional warrior who thinks of these amateurs as beneath him. I understand that you are reading thru the movie, thru the novel back to its source material; the film, at face value, is about a bunch of guys doing their duty with a bonehead CO. A common movie trope.
War brings out the best and the worst in people.
The only war scene in an outstanding war movie. Ironic scene here, Queeg is shown as a bit of a coward and wanting to run and this never was brought up in the court-martial. Yet, the typhoon scene showed Queeg as fearless and was not about to change course even though they were in danger of capsizing.
It showed Queeg as terrified and afraid to give an order to change course. to keep to his course would have doomed the ship. I've always wondered why at the trial it ws never mentioned that the ship lost its forward stack and mast.

This was inexcusable. The mutiny should have started here. Jose Ferrer had a point near the end, but Queeg was still an incompetent and cowardly ship commander.

@@konstantinosnikolakakis8125 I was wondering how many people would realize that. Also all the heavy clothing, long sleeves, gloves, etc. they were wearing was to prevent burns. This scene takes place in the tropics in June, but not getting 3rd degree burns was a lot more important than comfort.

It is anti-flash paint. It was supposed to prevent burns to the face when the guns are being fired by reflecting the heat of the blast.

I read the book Away All Boats after seeing the 1956 movie adaptation. Quite a lot more in the book not covered in the movie. The author was basically telling his viewpoint of the war with ships and personnel names changed. One thing that often came up was that the usual determination of who’s ship has the right of way was pretty well thrown out the window. According to the book, it was the ship with the captain’s highest seniority that the right of way was determined by. Pretty crazy if true. One instance a large group of ships were being attacked by Kamikaze’s and still they were going by seniority while maneuvering under attack. I tried to find out if there was anything to this or if there were repercussions or investigations but had no luck.

It's called anti-flash cream, it protects their faces from burns and heat from nearby explosions. This ship is a minesweeper so there was a good chance there would be some close explosions. Also it works as sunscreen too.

likely flash protection, similar to the hoods worn by AA and battleship crews. (Think modern FR clothing). Bomb and artillery hits on a boat filled with explosives, fuel, and paint aren't nice. Add to the fact the Japanese had a nasty type of sea mine that was just a barrel of fuel oil with an explosive charge means you had a good chance of getting a burn.

@Raging S Flash cream was not used in WW II navy, it was tested later in the war, but not used. It was sometimes worn by Marines on the first wave landing , but on ship it was not used. Head coverings and mask were worn by British. When Cain mutiny was released, naval personal that served on ships stated they never saw anyone wear cream in combat when asked about this film. Combat videos from ships at the time show no one wearing flash cream. You can view many clips to see that no one is wearing this cream during combat.
D N Herman Woulk had members of the Caine wearing flash paint in his novel “The Caine Mutiny”, and he served on two destroyer minesweepers in WW2.

My understanding was that it was kind of hit it miss using that cream. It's kind if like the plastic bags they assigned to troops doing beach landings to protect the weapons. Some who had it didn't use it, but most weren't assigned ans, so it has become more of a novelty or curiosity.

why the white face paint?
I believe it's a form of flash protection to protect the face from being burned if the destroyer were to fire its five inch guns when personnel were moving around on deck.

@@D.N.. The information I found in a Navy newsletter dated April 27, 1945 contradicts your assertion. It states, "Cream for the provention of flashburn found effective in battle trial: the protective effect of flashburn cream has been proved, according to an enthusiastic report recently received from the Pacific area. On a large ship in naval combat 75 per cent protection was afforded by the cream to those who were subject to flash." You can read the full report on Google Books.
@@artmoss6889 When this movie was released, those that served in the navy stated that they never saw anyone wear face cream or had even heard of it. There were those that wore face covering hoods on battleships.

Anti-flash cream. It's a zinc-oxide based cream that protects your face from excess heat and burns in combat. The issued it in WW2 for use in combat. It was phased out and nowadays they have specially made gear to protect sailors from heat related injuries

Why did they all have their faces slathered with white makeup in this scene? If it is supposed to be sunblock, they would not need that any more here than at any other place and time in tropical waters, and it certainly doesn't make sense as camouflage. I have always wondered about this.

Why are wearing facial beauty masks. I never heard of this movie. I watched almost every classic movies from Guns from Navarone, Bridge at the River of Kwaii, The Longest Day,etc, but I never heard this movie
