Denzel Washington and Ashton Sanders on The Equalizer 2

- Denzel Washington has been on quite the run over the last few years with Oscar-nominated turns in films like Flight, Fences, Roman J. Israel, Esq. and well received action films like Safe House, Man on Fire, and The Equalizer. The sequel to that last film, The Equalizer 2, features Washington reprising the role of Robert McCall who pursues the killers responsible for the death of a friend. McCall also focuses on guiding a young man named Miles out of a life of crime. Moonlight's Ashton Sanders plays Miles and he delivers a subtly fantastic portrayal of a man in conflict between the pull of the criminal element in his neighborhood and the brighter, possible future that McCall is presenting to him.
At the press day for the movie, I sat down with both of them to ask why Washington chose this movie to be his first sequel, what he enjoyed exploring in this movie, and what Sanders learned from working with Washington.

Look at how Ashton is studying Denzel. He is literally studying a living legend.
He’s closely observing Denzel’s fingers because that’s how Reptilians communicate. At 0:29 the interviewer is showing off his curved thumb, a common feature of the Djinn i.e. Reptilian.
The young actor would seemingly appear to be giving off gay vibes the way he stares down at Denzel’s mid section. To the untrained eye he appears to be “studying him”. To a thinking person, he’s exhibiting sexual tension by staring deeply at Denzel’s body. But, those with eyes to see and ears to hear with, these are simply three shapeshifters communicating both telegramically and telepathically.

Either the interviewer was nervous or slightly dismissive of Ashton right in the beginning. Love the eye contact of Denzel and Ashton 0.23 to 0.25 seconds into the interview (Is like this is what I told you to be aware of).

I would say that Ashton's performance nearly stole the movie. The role was very natural to him. He melted right into it. He was neck and neck with Denzel until the confrontation scene and Denzel put it in overdrive and left the young phenom in the dust. But this kid has awesome potential. The way he takes a character and owns it. To the point you forget he's acting. Al Pacino does the same thing. Doesn't look like he's acting. Like he's just being himself. I hope he takes care of his money and pick his roles well, so he doesn't get caught up like many actors do and up taking whatever roll is thrown at them.

LOVE new hot talent and this young man blows it out of the water in a remarkably difficult role. It had to be believable. I'm a great grandmother and I often find myself in a mentor role. I'm pretty choosey, though if you open your mind and heart, there is always young people who will surprise you, who need guidance, like a plant wanting water. My approach is simple.....Catch people doing something right, point it out, emphasize it, praise it. If it's honest, it will hit and it will help. Also, mentors must lead by example and one of the mainstays of my method is admit when I'm wrong. Demonstrate how to apologize, how to accept an apology. In any event, fantastic movie, I love this series.

Denzel is my FAVE actor! What I wouldn't give just to meet him! Every role he plays, he pulls you into his character without having to say a word sometimes. He is a brilliant actor and his talent flows effortlessly. You either have it or you don't and Denzel plays every role flawlessly. Did I mention I would LOVE to meet him? LOL!

If you have seen the movie, there is a scene where Denzel asks him to go to the book case in his room and pull out the book, Native Son. It had to be an inside joke because just a year later, he started in the movie of the same title. He was phenomenal!
