I used to work on ammonia refrigeration back 50 years ago. I can’t believe the PPE they have you guys wear now. The only safety equipment we had then were Scott air packs for when we had a really bad leak. I’ve had to go in and shut off leaks when the Fire Dept wouldn’t enter.
It was a different world back then. No gloves, no masks, all we wore was a tee shirt and worked with bare hands.
That old Frick valve looks like it’s been in place since I was working!
Used to work on a lot of 2 cylinder slow speed vertical Frick compressors driven by synchronous motors. Some had been in continuous operation for 60-70 years. Rebuild the valves, replace piston rings and crankshaft bearings and they’d run for another 60 years. Probably still running.
I find it interesting that ammonia systems are coming back. Can’t beat the efficiency compared to Freon, and ammonia is less of an environmental hazard too.

Thanks. I've worked on synchronous motors and dual acting vilter compressors. Frick 10 x 10s and so on. I have some pics and videos. I'll make something and post it for your viewing pleasure. Lol

Missed a trick there Dan. I would have told the customer it has to be a full pump out. Cut old valve out and weld new in on overtime at the weekend 😂 £££££. $$$$.
Nice work buddy. Job well done👍.

Love the videos! I especially like seeing the proper PPE always being used, In my industry (Ice Rink) people generally are not trained properly or provided the proper PPE which we are pushing hard to change and get the proper safety training out there with any rink that has NH3. Keep up the good work!

Good Job!!! Always hated those low pressure 4 bolt bonnets, too many guys would reef on em and bend the corners.

Very good job and it is very dangerous as you know but everything worked out for you when I usually do it after I pack a valve I use a special lead anti-seize it’s an actually a great sealant for ammonia systems and it won’t hurt the system

Thanks brother great video. Two questions one I remember a journeymen using Teflon tape on a Copeland service valve what do I use to repack Copeland service valve? Also I'm in house Crac units new facility on west coast whats asme code notice the crac units don't have relief valves on the relievers. Maybe fusible plug? I seen 1/4 brass male npt x1/4 male flare on the receiver these are small receivers Vertiv Liebert 60 tons 245 of them big facility can't go into location. Any feedback appreciated. Be safe thanks always remind me ppe!😂

They sell small rope packing materials. But try to get the oem packing if it's still available. Most of those are. Small relievers do have a relief plug in them. Thanks

Cool to see someone else working in this field. Into it as a contractor for a few years doing service. Gotta ask, what is AML? I see it’s a liquid line maybe sub cooled because of the insulation but I’m not familiar with that abbreviation.

Thanks. This customer developed his own PSM RMP program that incorporated all the older terms for labels. AML is the ammonia liquid line.

Hello, nice video. I have a question, I hope you can help me. Whats that you put inside? Whats that material made of?

    • @alliancetechnh3368

Firstly, thank you very much, brother. I have a question. Please, did you empty the tube of liquid before doing this work or not? Does it work with the valve open or closed?

    • @alliancetechnh3368
      @alliancetechnh3368  3 месяца назад

The 2" liquid line was full of liquid. The valve has to be completely open in the back seated position to perform the packing replacement. Not all valves are the same. If you're trying to perform please get the OEM manuals for your valve. UNDERSTAND YOUR VALVES OPERATION AND PARTS.

Does it make a difference if it's back seated (open) or front seated (closed)
