  • In this classic model kit review, I'm looking at the Tamiya Bristol Beaufighter in 1/48 scale (kit no. 61053). We'll be looking at the built up kit, the kit instructions, the surface detailing, the transparencies, the decals, potential problem areas to watch out for, and finally, I'll be giving my conclusions. With the newer Beaufighter kit from Revell currently available, is this classic Tamiya Beaufighter still the best? Let's find out together!

Hi Jon. Nice video. About the Tamiya kit of the Beau in 1/48 scale, IIRC it was referenced by the Tamiya people from the Mk 21 in exhibition in the Moorabbin Air Force Museum in Melbourne (VIC), Australia. As a consequence, the kit shows different panel lines on the upper wings (LH vs RH). This is correct for the Mk 21 version and incorrect for the other ones. The Revell offering in the same scale shows correct panel lines on both the upper wings for the versions but the Mk 21. 😊

@giovannimusacchi2949 Thanks, Giovanni! In general, the Revell Beaufighter kit is more detailed/accurate, but the Tamiya is the easier build. Cheers!

Great video Jon! I find it amazing how when one starts a kit, how much you learn about that subject, and then realize no matter how good the kit is, the inaccuracies then jump out when your building or finishing the model. Always thought the Bristol was a bit ordinary in appearance with a very early war or even 30’s look to it, but as you’ve shown, after building, one begins to appreciate the design. Great job and Thanks!

@@SCSuperheavy114 Thank you! Getting to know the subject and doing your own research are some of my favorite aspects of the build. Cheers!

    NICE BOX ART !!!!!!!
    Good Morning from OHIO
Funny just seen a documentary about the Air War in the desert, showed many photos and films of this aircraft…
I think REVELL, produced a 1/32 version back in the early/ mid 70s…
After I watch this, going to
€Bay and seeing what’s available of this Model / Aircraft…
    Both TAMIYA and Revell ??????
Typical TAMIYA Quality, I like it
    GOOD REVIEW, GOOD CHOICE…
    Let’s see what I find on €Bay
AUSTRALIA used this in the PACIFIC …..
    this was fun !!!!!!!
    AND it was Entertaining and
    Informative !!!!!! 😬
    Have a great weekend ☀️☀️
    MODEL ON ……….

@chrispacer4231 Thanks, Chris! Revell released a newer 1/48 Beaufighter kit that is more detailed/accurate than the Tamiya, but not as easy to build. Cheers!

Jon, this is one of my favorite finish out in your series, the camo is so well defined - did you use a base coat? Interesting how you caught the design discrepancies, that's hard to do on British aircraft as it seems they were cranking out variants and modifications on a regular basis.. Model kits of the Beaufighter seem to be making a comback for some odd reason. Will be interesting to see what's next on the build list. Cheers Bob.

@c123bthunderpig Thanks, Bob! I didn't use a basecoat. I just painted the colors and masked between colors with a rolled kneadable eraser and rubber cement. The British did crank out lots of variants. That's why I like a good series of photos so I can do a bit of my own research. Until next time, cheers!

Great review, might have to consider this one as you suggest as a first attempt at a twin engine, 1/48 aircraft. I'll have to go through your archive of videos and see if there's a review of Tamiya's Mosquito you've done, I'd love to do a Mosquito eventually.

@scaleffect Thanks! The Tamiya Mosquito is a great kit but much more detailed and involved build-wise so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a great first twin-engine build. I want to review the Mosquito in the future. Cheers!

beautiful plane Jon , I built a 1:32 scale one about 50 years ago , but can't remember whos kit it was .(Revell ?) Love the looks of the Beau ! dihedral on the tail introduced to help stability .

I have built several Tamiya kits, ships, and airplanes, but this Beaufighter has to be the worse kit I have built from them. No kidding! I built the old Revell 1/32 scale Beaufighter a few years back, and it actually had less fitting issues then the 1/48 scale Tamiya. 99.99 percent of Tamiya kits I have built have been really a nice experience to put together, and display. The 1/48 Beaufighter is a dog.

@paulsmodels The molds from your boxing sounds like they were produced on a Friday. I have had several of the same kits from the same manufacturer with widely varying quality on the plastic parts. That may be the case here. Thanks for the heads-up. Cheers!
