It’s a solid series

Spy Kids and Sharkboy and Lavagirl were always some of my favorite movies as a kid and honestly I’m so glad kids nowadays are still able to experience them in a similar way. Kids need to have media made for them that doesn’t treat them like they’re infants but also doesn’t treat them like teens or adults. Sometimes kids just want movies that are fun adventures that never talk down to them and show that, hey kids have a little power too!
Those movies have aged horribly, but does that even matter when they’re still fun adventures that don’t take themselves seriously?
well true, the director seemed to intent these movies to feel like children made it and it certainly worked for the third one
Mann ‘dream, dream, dream dream dream dreaaamm’ is still a hit lol shark boy & lava girl still holds up ! maybe not the cgi lol but the movie itself
So true I completely agree with you
Think about The Parent Trap. The Lindsey Lohan one is ingrained in our memory but it was a remake/reboot! So my mom treasures the original, but recognizes that my generation loves the Lindsey one. You can be bummed about the lack of originality, especially with Disney, but in the end its usually for kids to enjoy
This is a great example honestly
The Lohan one was a remake
thats what I was saying lol
@@FinnHutcherson
@@lilybilly6878 it's not the same thing
Along with Freaky Friday. It is also a Lindsey Lohan remake that I have treasured and love. The original was loved by the older generation, the 2000’s is loved by my generation and the new one is liked by the younger. We all have our different versions that we treasure
A Spy Kids movie where Carmen and Juni are parents and their own kids became spy’s would’ve been perfect. New kids for a new generation and the old kids as the parents for the previous generation. You’d get double the audience pull.
gonna be honest I genuinely love how Robert Rodriguez just does everything on his films. literally insane. these are not movies that should be good. they are simply meant to serve as a cornerstone for a generation’s childhood
The fact not only rebooted it but slammed all 3 movies in one movie still shocks me this is the same guy who made the cult horror classic “The Faculty”
Wowee it is
So nothing of the 4th Spy Kids film is mentioned in this new one?
@@COSun25 no becuz they never introduce time travel in this one like in 4th one ( that shouldn’t be mentioned and never existed shhhhh)
@@COSun25 they still stole some of the plot from the fourth movie
You're kidding, I loved The Faculty as a kid. What was that actress's name? Clea Duvall? Omg
I actually saw spy kids 4 in the theater and it was actually a “4D” Movie with a smellivision card that went with it. All of those gross parts in the fourth movie were meant to be scratch n sniff parts where it would flash a coordinating number on the screen. I only remember the fart smelling one when the dog farts.
i thought there was a baby diaper one too 🤢

@@ZbJeeBies 100% there was a baby diaper and even as a kid i thought WHY IS THIS HERE
*When you are a kid watching Spy Kids:* This is the coolest thing ever made. I want to be a Spy Kid too. *When you are an adult watching Spy Kids:* This is campy fun and hilarious. Still a total blast to watch.

12:24 I was waiting for you to mention Carmen’s “Isle of Dreams” song…was just thinking about it a few days ago & how hard she SLAYED that performance! Iconic.
Different perspective here as a female spy kids enjoyer; full disclosure haven't seen the reboot and probably won't as a grown person but, so many kids movies with brother-sister duos have the "good girl who does no wrong" and even as a kid it was tiring. I liked the original spy kids because Carmen was kind of an asshole at times and wasn't just "the good one fixing problems". More sibling kids movies where the girl is the problem lmao
Why would you want the girl to be the problem? That’s strange. It’s good to see siblings that actually get along for a kids movie
Are you just self-projecting yourself as the bad sibling?
@@Snow-xd4rv I mean, yes and no. What I'm saying is that "good kids who are just good" is boring to watch, as someone who was once both a kid and a girl, lol. Characters who are annoying and have issues are fun for kids to engage with, that's why having more of them in kids media is good. Getting told even in your fantasy stories that kids have to be good and well behaved all the time sucks!
the thing about it tho is the 4th movie had the asshole sister aswell and they probably didnt wanna do it a 5th time the only problem is this kid isnt an asshole thats funny like carmen because juni gets payback this dude is just an asshole for no reason
I get what you mean, you want variety and nuance with characters. Not something black and white with one character being the good and one being bad. Along with making characters especially ones that are assholes, they kinda need some traits to balance it out or have something they care to make the audience enjoy. Lol or just have them be entertaining and funny assholes.
Spy Kids 1 &2 are iconic. "Please, Mr. Lisp, have a seat." "Uh its actually Mr. Listhp." I disagree that the 2nd one is boring, it was my favorite as a kid. My brother and I rewatched it in adulthood. Totally holds up.
Didn’t even know that we were getting a 5th Spy Kids… the more you know
Is there going to be a sixth one ?
@@Missmagazinebura hopefully not I hated the new one ngl.
The more "realistic", less cartoony route was probably the safest decision for the reboot. I work with elementary school kids (mainly 3rd graders, who were born in *2015* if you can belive it) and they all grew up with really good CGI, they're way more keen on what does and doesn't look "right" than how we were as kids. Hell, I was talking to a bunch of kids about how the original godzilla movies were made with miniature cities and showing them pictures and this eight year old popped up about how physical props look better than CGI (which I agreed with, but damn I did not think about those things as a kid).
I do love the cartoony style of spy kids, and while I totally think making effects that look both cartoony and believable is something that can absolutely be done, that's a balance that needs care - especially when targeting kids that were raised on modern marvel movies and are way more cued into what does and doesn't look "right" than we ever were.
So while it's not my favorite, I totally get why they'd go in this direction and I hope it pays off. And if it gets sequels.... Fingers crossed for maybe a little more color in their spy gear going forward lol
How does the cgi get worse with each film in this franchise?
there’s no way you think the cgi in this is worse than game over lol be fr
@@MrNostalgia: To be fair, the cgi didn't bother me so much since most of the film took place inside a video game. Sure, the final robot battle at the end looks so fake, but the cgi worked given the being inside a video game ascetic.
@@jessetorres8738 I mean regardless though, did you really expect them to drop 150 mil on a film meant for 8 year olds? The Spy Kids movies having cheap budgets have always been a part of the charm.
@@MrNostalgia : True, I won't disagree with you on that.
@@MrNostalgiaTBF it's been 10 years and it's a Netflix film. The only way the CGI would have been worse is if it was a Disney Channel Original Movie.
Love your argument for why kids should just have their movies instead of the adults that grew up watching the originals. Great video!
I’m a little disappointed that you didn’t once mention Steve Buscemi’s most famous line from Spy Kids 2.
You all know what it is, don’t lie.
I remember drinking with buddies in college and caught spy kids 2 around thar scene and it alone made us sit and finish it while pontificating on it
Still absolutely insane that such a good line comes from Spy Kids 2 of all things
Spykids was pretty sweet but that episode of zeke and luther with the terminator skate board that was just pure dramatic beauty(blasts coat of arms by the life and the times)
I think people like the third one the most because back in the day it was the only one available on Disney Channel for reruns for a while before they got around to re-airing the first one. I’m not sure about the second one and they definitely reran it ALOT
I thought spy kids Armageddon was awesome. If this becomes a new trilogy i would like to see a cross-over effect where the original spy kids return all grown up to help the new spy kids in a super secret mission
Personally I think Spy Kids 4 should have been a full reboot instead of a soft reboot/sequel because there was no reason for it not to be other than nostalgia. However I'm glad this is a full reboot instead of a continuation and although I don't really for it because it reminds me to much of the previous movies AND The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl, I hope a few more movies get made and they start to do their own thing without relying too much on the previous movies.
The dedication to always find a way to mention Zeke and Luther I respect
As far as the kids ages are concerned. I saw an interview with Robert Rodriguez and he kept referring to the kid actors as being 8 years old. So it seems that they're both the same age. So they just might be twins in the movie.
They need to stop rebooting childhood classics 😭
Bruh you missed the entire point of the video lol. This is a new spy kids for a new generation of kids
The future is now,old man 😤
Its not a reboot, plus ur childhood is over
@@cookimaus1dang how sad for yall
@@Ari-rm9xw i grew up with the originals so i think its safe to say im okay with a new spy kids. It is a little sad and shows my age but i feel like they did it decently
3:56 when you mentioned the bad guy using a game sounds similar to Spy Kids 3 where they used a game to keep the players sucked in. Also the fact the kids not knowing the parents are spies can be from Spy Kids 1 (3:46). This would show that they kept some of the aspects from the franchise and sort of merged it into this movie.
I like spy kids 2. I like how Emily osment appeared and gave him advice . Also the fight between Gary giggles and the dad was funny to watch 😂
Emily Osmit was in my manager's school in LA. LMAO she was 'dating' her brother ans when she left to record Spy Kids she didn't say goodbye. When she came back she said she was "too good for him." I honestly just love that, good for her.
I remember the Spy Kids Trilogy fondly (don't really think about the 4th one much as I haven't even seen it), although, I tend to think about the 3rd one more as it is one I have seen more, plus, there's a freaking Metroid reference in it
I remember when Spy Kids 4 come out; I really wanted to go, but I never did. Utimately, happy I never pay money for that movie to see it in theaters.
Spy kids was neither good enough nor bad enough to require a reboot. It was one of those movies you put on when you have your family over. Something to distract the kids while you talk to their parents.
L take, spy kids is S tier Cinema how dare you!
I watched this movie and genuinely thought the whole “be nice and talk it out” thing was just going to be a one off joke
It should've been honestly. That's something I really didn't like about it.
great start to a sunday, thank you Mr. Nostalgia!! Hope you're doing good xx
This may be my 2023 brain, but this villain could ironically do so much good trying to get rid of terrible things.
Imagine getting rid of racism, hunger, and going to a darker place misuogny and r**pe, serial killers, etc.
I know this is not how it works, but imagine altering people’s brain chemistry to not think like a’holes without completely eliminating free will.

Did anyone ever notice that Carmen's name changed in the third movie? I rewatched the series a few months ago and I noticed! I wonder if that was on purpose, or if that was an error.
Also, I disagree. The second was the greatest. When all the kids were beating a** at the banquet! Then later when Carmen and Juni were fighting the skeletons! And they were competing with the Giggles siblings! I loved it.
I also disagree that the third movie looks bad in 2d. When I watch it I'm still in awe today - but I definitely have a bias towards Spy Kids. When everyone from their past comes to help save the day from Sylvester Stallone, I always hoot and holler. You can't tell me anything bad about Spy Kids. Those movies are like fine wine - it gets better with age! I don't care if I'm almost 30.😂
wdym her name changed?
Damn how many times they gonna make Spy Kids I only knows about the first 3 movies
I don’t even care that I have to wait for your videos. They’re so good it’s worth the wait
Growing up, I used to LOVE the Disney movie, Don’t Look Under the Bed, and they would only show it around Halloween. Now, my nephew watches it on repeat on DisneyPlus ALL YEAR ROUND.. 😐 Kids have everything nowadays. 😂
Omg I recently rewatched “how to eat fried worms,” I would constantly watch it as a kid. All I could remember about the movie was that a work was microwaved/exploded and that Luke Benward played the main character
Waiting for the dvd! You brought me back I forgot how that felt. Kids are so lucky today
I disagree with the "its made for kids" argument. No excuse for it being sub-par. Genuinely there are kids movies that were made a long time ago that you can watch as an adult and say "this is really good" you cant say the same for "We Can Be Heroes" or some of the stuff coming out today. Just my opinion though. Yeah kids today enjoy it but... its not safe from criticism.
I see where you're coming from. That's just Robert Rodriguez's style though. He likes to work with the smallest budget he can on purpose and stretch every dollar as far as possible to innovate camerawork and himself/crew/actors. The end result and feel of it is something I think people either like or don't lol his very first film he spent 7k and it made a few mil, but that was before he was famous. His budgets are much bigger now but he still likes to work small.
I disagree , sharkboy and lavagirl is a prime example of made for kid .watching it when I was younger I full heartedly thought the movie was good rewatching it now the movies trash but that's fine because kid thoroughly enjoyed it and a lot of ppl still love the movie even admitting that it was only made for their childlike brain, spykid is another one that while fun for the family is definitely made for kids.
My thoughts exactly. Robert Rodriguez films are different from other kids films. Most of them just simply haven't aged well but they're still really creative
@@MrNostalgia Fair point.
I agree. There are kids films that adults can enjoy not only because of nostalgia but for the deeper messages/themes present within the film. Not every film has this but for those that do ; it adds an extra layer making it rewatchable.
I still own Spy Kids on VHS... I'm old. Ha, I'm 23 actually.
Also, props to you for shouting out Zathura, one of my favorites that doesn't get the credit it deserves!
I will always cry with nostalgia at the final fight where all the original trilogy characters come to help in the 3rd film. That’s the only redeemable thing about Spy Kids 3D.
In the spy kids around in time carmen and Junie were in the elite part of the deactivated agents it is still weird to see Oliva Rodriguez aka lettie outside of the fast and furious series
As a kid I thought the coolest thing with spy kids was all their tech so my favourite was the second one and then maybe the first one
I love watching your videos and hearing your input! I absolutely LOVED the second spy kids and it’s still a classic (in my opinion) to this day. I totally agree with what you said about how people don’t want to accept anything that’s new for a rebooted franchise when we are clearly not the target audience for that intended film (unless marketed as otherwise). For example, with the new iCarly, I would argue that - with that specific reboot - yes, it’s for the audience that grew up with that show. Everything else, they’re trying something new. People who get so hurt over reboots when they’re not marketed towards them … it’s not that deep 🤣🤣
Also Robert Rodriguez is like the only notable alumni from the high school I graduated from so I’ll mention that to people every now and then just because 🤣
we need a pop collection in you video man the animation is cool
love the honest review
This feels like deja vu after the one with Rowan Blanchard and Jessica alba
11:40 The obligatory Zeke and Luther reference
The movie was good but Robert Rodriguez needs new ideas. They already went inside of a video game in the 3rd movie. Their house was stormed and the kids found out the parents were spies in the first movie. It had tracking device jewelry like the first movie, the parents were captured like the first movie, and other spies invaded the safe house like the first movie.
I agree
There’s no fourth movie call back with the time
@@Missmagazineburayea but there are still some things they took from the 4th movie and placed in this one
Nah that 3rd act in spy kids 3 "call the family" shit had me so hyped as a kid, whenever they pulled up. I would start posing
I have the fondest memories of spykids 3d where my dad tried to make 3d glasses for the dvd version. I remember him tracing the glasses the movie came with on to portfolio folder and then taped red and blue film paper. It didnt work but I still enjoyed the fact he did it.
the disney channel commercial break leading into the youtube ad was a nice touch
I think it's an incomplete argument to say "That was your _____, this is their ______", as if the two versions are mutually exclusive, especially for a kid. In this era when everything is at a click of a distance, they can enjoy it in the same way, because they won't really care about the bits of generational differences, just having a good time.
Even I really loved, and still do, movies like Back to The Future and I didn't say "This isn't my SiFi" or played Super Mario World when I had my Xbox 360 saying "This isn't my game generation".
However, criticism is important to get quality products. Reboots, remakes, whatever, they all need to at least give you something at the end and enjoy the ride, it's what we should focus on.
I saw this the other day and was tempted to give it a watch, even though I wasn't expecting much. I was hoping you'd review it before I got around to it, glad I waited 😅
Edit: Also I'm gonna need to see you review Sky High. It's one of the few movies I feel capture a comic look in film. The only other being Scott Pilgrim
I was born 2004 and I loved the original trilogy, watching the new one with my niece was such a throwback and the whole family had a good time
My only complaint is that I very much enjoy the 2nd and 3rd Spy Kids movies, even to this day, so I don't appreciate the slander haha. Kidding of course. I actually didn't even know this movie came out on Netflix, so this was a nice advertisement of sorts for me to watch it. So thanks for that.
if never even knew about the series til now
17:07-17:37 yes somebody finally said it i feel like this goes for some reboots that are for kids
I actually enjoyed this one as it still had that spy kids energy, but mixed for adults too. The cgi also looks way better of course and the theme of the movie is better than just 'sad bad guy with an evil idea'.
The theme was hamfisted, not well established and very contrary in a spy movie, for a theme about fairness
I loovved the originals as a kid and have watched them, 4, and 5 with my daughter (7) now. We rewatched them all again with this one two days ago, but skipped 4 lol we'll go back and watch it..eventually :p So it's been a while since I've seen 4, but i feel like i liked this one better than that one- but the first three were perfect in my nostalgic mind, especially the first. When i was like 9 i went to school with my hair slicked straight back with allllll of the gel my hair would hold and a leather vest thinking that i was a bada*s spy kid and I...what was I talking about?
Oh right...the credits of 5 made me have a mini panic attack when i realized the director's tiny little kid wrote and produced it with him because....he's an adult now, which made me feel old. I cried and laughed while looking at my kid and telling her how old i was to which she comedically panicked and said, "ahhh! Pull yourself out of it dam* it! Snap out! You're 187! Why do you keep thinking you're only 31?"
Again. 7.
Idk where she heard that or how she came up with the witty bit so quick but I stopped crying to correct her real quick- I am only 31.
Ngl I was kinda excited to watch this movies and I was not disappointed tbh it was a fun adventure I love how they integrated the modern tech to the movie it feel like a good reboot for once
3:32 DUDE 😂😂😂 I love that reference
Kind of funny to refer to Spy Kids 4 as the Girl Meets World one even thought the 4th movie came out before Girl Meets World.
I saw the 3rd one in theaters before i even knew the others existed so that one holds a lot of nostalgia for me too... but boy did i miss out lol
Spy Kids 2 is my favorite one. C'mon, Steve Buschemi's line? "Do you think God stays in Heaven because he too is afraid of what he's created?"
Brooo you have to talk about Sharkboy and Lavagirl now. I remember loving it as a kid and I tried to watch it a few years ago, it was a trio for sure.
I began worrying you weren't gonna mention Zeke and Luther somehow
In that case they should make an icarly style spy kids movie with the original characters I would loveeeee it
I didn't even know there was a reboot
I have not seen Spy Kods 4 since it was in theaters and the thing i remember most is the Scratch n Sniff cards that didnt even work.
Do you think people can still watch the version with pop-ups telling you when to sniff?
The first 2 spy kids movies will always be my favorite
Only saw a post a week ago and thought it was a joke....clearly I was wrong
Apparently they haven't learned from their mistakes from 4
4 is good what do you mean. Til this day I love the family dynamic in the fourth film
@@DarkFaeCosplay good for you
I feel like people aren't fully comprehending that this movie is NOT intended for the people who grew up with the original trilogy, like us. Of course people our age aren't going to like it: we're like, double the age of the target audience.
It's the total opposite of the new Indiana Jones movie. Kids watched and enjoyed the originals, and the new one is meant for those same people who enjoyed the original movies; it is not intended for children today, who have no experience with the other movies. It's meant for the same generation. This Spy Kids IS intended for children today and NOT the people who enjoyed the originals; it's meant for the new generation, not us.
Times change, generations' interests change, and people grow up. Adults might find kids' media stupid because...we're not kids anymore. Kids probably find adult media dumb as well, because they're not the target audience.
Um kids or at least 8 year olds won’t watch adult media 😅
that's literally what he says in the vid! "let kids have their fun"
always hate the " its a kids movie its not meant for adults " argument
when people have kids they sit and watch the movie with them most of the time
so the content has to be something competent to some extent
not to mention the whole point of using the same i.p most of the time is so the the adult sees a familiar name and gauges it as something appropriate for their child to consume
content meant for teaching kids how to read and write etc is probably the only time where it is actually solely for children
DUDE ZOOM WITH TIM ALLEN IS AN ABSOLUTE BANGER
18:00 I mean some directors DO get worse/lose “the magic” over the years 😂
How to Eat Fried Worms is underrated. Tbh late 90s/early 2000s kids never really had kids movie that hit from early 2010s that was dcoms and nick movies. Some that had the heart was direct to dvd movies and I liked those types of movies back in the day they can hit you in the heart.
I love that movie.
I think it’s valid that you have that perspective. I just personally love the original movies more. Because they really impact me a lot. An I’m really happy that
“You gotta admit this is cool” continues to show the worst thing i’ve ever seen in a kids movie
No way that is the worst
Spy Kids 4 had a kid vomit into a bag and launch it into a dudes face. 3 times.
It just kinda came out of nowhere 😅 i can’t even remember when the fourth one came out (somewhere in the 2010’s i think)
I don't know if I love the argument of kids films just needing to be good enough for kids? Kids deserve good movies too. Doesn't need to be Wes Anderson but if we want the next generation to have any media literacy... Garbage in, garbage out. It's okay if Spy Kids is just fine, but kids also deserve better than fine.
Most of the movies that I grew up on were "just fine" very few of them do I genuinely think hold up today.
I think kids are still getting good movies. Slumberland on Netflix for instance I thought was very good
2:20 Same. I think the plot was just the coolest for boys that’s why we watched it more
It’s still my favorite of the trilogy
i haven't watched Spy Kids in yrs i didn't even know they developed a new up-to-date movie on Netflix.
Didn't even know it got a reboot.
You know you just enlighten me on this cuz I watched very little and kinda just didn’t think it would live up to the others but yeah they really are just for kids. How can I judge something that just isn’t meant for me. I do hope it does get better overtime cuz with todays tech a new spy kids 2 could be very cool
So... could this be the "Chuck Movie" that Zachary Levi talks about every so often?😂😂😂
ok real talk i saw the first paddington and loved it so maybe i need to see the second one cause of what you said LMAO
It so weird that their last name is so close to cortetz lol
I love the 90s intro aesthetic, because the 2000 have none
I didn’t see this one coming.
I didnt even compare this one to the original franchise, because the nostalgia is too strong, i knew i would be biased, i compared it with we can be heroes because it’s Robert’s most recent work, and i actually like we can be heroes, so i knew if i had issues with this movie it wouldn’t be nostalgia based. It’s really just the way it looks that didn’t do it for me, like personally i love the kitchy bad cgi green screen look of all his kids movies, it’s the main appeal for me, just that he was doing something unapologetically fun and for kids. And so since this one looked all dark, drab and boring, (except for the final video game level that was fun at least) it just killed the whole thing for me. But like you said this isn’t for me, it’s for kids, and i agree with you, i liked the sibling dynamic in this one, it was a nice change, they were pretty equal, it was cute. The parents were definitely there. As someone who watches a lot of kids content, I personally wouldn’t rewatch this one, but that’s just me
9:35 you family never rented movies from Blockbuster.
I can't look Junny in the face anymore not after he was in that Teeth horror movie
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this new spy kids movie. The 2 things that really stuck out to me was, first, how grey it was. Everywhere they go nearly was so black and grey and boring to look at. Even the bad guys. The ending was the best part for me because it had the colours of the first movie. Even the house was grey. Which brings me to the second thing, set design. The first movie was so lived in and clearly each set was designed with such love and joy, and that was not present here. It really does take away from the whole.
I saw this movie while scrolling the other day, but I confused it for the 4th film and dismissed it. Now, though.. kinda intrigued?
