They wrote this song after some of the events that happened early on. Jamals father was trying to silence him about coming out (hence the hook). Hakeem had been a part of an issue that caused Obama to call their father, and Bunkie was just killed. Alot of the things in the song were established right away so its like a true introduction to the characters personalities, and their current situations. Its probably my favorite song right now... totally my anthem this morning.

It's pretty much textbook untreated mental illness behavior.
I think empire is the goat of music shows because it represents the rebellion against society, and refusing to change yourself. (Inspires people to own themselves in tough times)
