    Got questions about using a PC hard drive in your NVR or server for security surveillance? In this video, we break down the crucial differences between PC hard drives and surveillance-specific hard drives.
    While PC drives are versatile but not ideal for continuous, high-capacity data streaming, surveillance drives like Seagate's Skyhawk are designed for 24/7 use, ensuring your security data remains intact. These drives prioritize data streaming, lower heat production, and reliability, making them a clear choice for any professional security system.
    Choose the right tool for the job and invest in a surveillance hard drive to prevent data loss and maintain a professional security setup.

    Simple and clear about complex things. Thanks for the video

    My takeaways:
    1 - desktop drives are designed to operate for a typical workday (8-12 hours), and, more significantly, perform well with data bursts (eg: as you open and save files) and about equal demands for reads and writes
    2 - surveillance drives are designed to operate 24hrs a day and handle continuous data writes efficiently (way more WRITES than reads in this application). The internal programming within the surveillance drive is optimized for a write heavy and continuous workload.
    You CAN use a desktop drive in a DVR appliance, but you may experience dropped frames, timeouts, and other 'quirks' at random...or it could function flawlessly. For the cost difference I'd recommend the drive designed for 24hour operation under continuous load versus a desktop drive. If you want to install it and forget it, get the surveillance drive.

    not disputing the presentation but sharing some feedback. As an experiment I used a PC hard drive in two 16 channel analog DVRs. 2yrs later still running, Recording and payback working well. I'm not recommending this but it does work in my case. Once these drives fail, I will likely put in Surveillance drives like the WD purple.

      Thank you for sharing your experience!
      It's always valuable to hear about real-world experiments like yours. In your case, it seems like your PC hard drive has been performing well, but it's important to remember that not all PC hard drives may work as reliably in DVRs over the long term. Surveillance drives are optimized for this type of usage, so they tend to be a safer and more dependable choice for recording and playback in surveillance systems.
      Good luck in your future projects!

    How about Vice-Versa? Surveillance Hard Drive using for Desktop/PC ?

    • @piplsystems
      @piplsystems  9 месяцев назад

      Using a surveillance hard drive in a desktop or PC is possible but comes with considerations. Surveillance drives are optimized for continuous, 24/7 operation and may not offer the same performance as standard desktop drives. Compatibility, potential warranty issues, noise, and vibration levels should be taken into account. Data recovery and backup solutions should be implemented, and you should evaluate whether the features and durability of a surveillance drive justify the potentially higher cost for desktop use. In summary, it's feasible, but not always the most cost-effective or high-performance solution for typical computer tasks.

    good video but I have a question is the same for the SSD because the hard drive has different colors but how do I choose the right SSD?

    • @piplsystems
      @piplsystems  5 месяцев назад

      Hello!
      Using SSDs in surveillance offers advantages like faster performance, low power consumption, and more. However, concerns include limited write endurance, higher cost per gigabyte, capacity constraints, and compatibility issues in some legacy systems.
      In short, for a surveillance system, choose SSDs for faster performance, durability, and resistance to shocks. Opt for HDDs if budget is a priority, and you need cost-effective, high-capacity storage. Consider the specific demands of your surveillance setup, balancing performance needs with budget constraints.

    i just bought a WD 10 TB Survelence pro hard drive but its temperature goes high 50' C plus is that normal or any issue with the drive?

    • @piplsystems
      @piplsystems  3 месяца назад

      It is generally considered to be on the high side, but whether it's "normal" depends on various factors such as the drive's environment, workload, and manufacturer specifications.
      Some key points:
      Check the manufacturer's specifications for the hard drive model you're using.
      Ensure that the enclosure allows for adequate airflow to dissipate heat effectively.
      Overall, while temperatures up to 50' C may not immediately indicate a problem, it's essential to monitor the situation and take appropriate measures to ensure the long-term reliability and performance of the hard drive.
      Hope this helps!

      Why would you go for a slower surveillance HDD at a higher cost for your PC?
      In 2024, I recommend not to use an HDD at all for a typical desktop and use an SDD instead.

    I purchased a new 2 bay NAS from a private party that came with 2 Seahwak 8TG drives (for free!). I have no need for surveillance so is it still OK to use these drives for regular NAS stuff? Hate to buy two more when I have 8TB x 2 already.

      Thank you for watching!
      Yes, it's absolutely okay to use the Seagate Skyhawk 8TB drives for regular NAS storage purposes, even if they are initially designed for surveillance systems. These drives are optimized for continuous operation and high reliability, which makes them suitable for NAS setups where data storage and retrieval are frequent activities. :)

      But I keep reading that surveillance drives emphasize writing and read is de-emphasized

    • @we6871
      @we6871 5 месяцев назад

      But I keep reading and seeing videos where surveillance drives are NOT the recommended drive for regular NAS use because they put most of their priority on writing and de-emphasize read capability. So not an ideal setup even though technically it can be done.@@piplsystems

    Purple... 256 mb vs 64 mb cache... Which one is better and why?

    • @piplsystems
      @piplsystems  Месяц назад +1

      Hello!
      If you’re comparing Purple drives, the one with a 256MB cache is generally better than the 64MB cache. The larger cache helps with faster data access, more efficient writes, and smoother performance, especially important for continuous recording and handling multiple video streams in surveillance systems.
