  • I told Althea, I was feeling lost
    Lacking in some direction
    Althea told me upon scrutiny
That my back might need protection
    I told Althea that treachery
Was tearing me limb from limb
Althea told me, now cool down boy
    Settle back easy, Jim
You may be Saturday's child all grown
Moving with a pinch of grace
You may be a clown in the burial ground
    Or just another pretty face
You may be the fate of Ophelia
    Sleeping and perchance to dream
Honest to the point of recklessness
    Self-centered to the extreme
Nobody messing with you but you
Your friends are getting most concerned
Loose with the truth, maybe it's your fire
Baby I hope you don't get burned
When the smoke has cleared, she said
That's what she said to me
You're gonna want a bed to lay your head
    And a little sympathy
There are things you can replace
    And others you cannot
The time has come to weigh those things
    This space is getting hot
You know this space is getting hot
I told Althea, I was a roving sign
I was born to be a bachelor
Althea told me, okay that's fine
You know now I'm trying to catch her
Can't talk to you without talking to me
We're guilty of the same old things
Thinking a lot about less and less
And forgetting the love we bring

I was at this show. We were spoiled back then in Connecticut. On the same tour within an hour drive you could see the Dead in Hartford, Springfield, Bridgeport, New Haven, or Worcester to name a few. Great times. Fantastic that the music still endures.

@@johnshanley4407 I guess I was mistaken about Bridgeport. But certainly we could see a lot of shows in New England back then within the same tours, which was awesome!

Damnnnn; sounds like a pretty fuggn good time. Would’ve loved to have seen them out in Boston ‘76 (The Road Trips vol. x num. x one, with “comes a time” - best version of that tune I’d ever heard) too. Must’ve been a helluva time my man; I’m out in Haverhill, MA - would love for Jerry to just pop outta the thin air and start playing a show in the sky for this world right now lol. 🌎🌍🌏⚡️💀⚡️🌏🌍🌎

Was born in 72 so I was kinda late but thanks to the good Lord in enough time to get the chance to experience this special special band. I like Althea alot because she was probably one hell of a cool chick you know? I believe really unique and special music tells us a story.. and it's almost like we all knew Althea too you know? I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I will never say that keeping the music and genuinely joyfully good feeling still sorta alive, actually live... and John Mayer is one hell of a talented dude no question, and it's really cool this song turned him on. But man I'm so sorry for the very Earth itself losing this bunch of weird wonderful sometimes ridiculous kinda, group of dudes that hung out together and played whatever they felt like at the moment. That's to me, THEE secret to the Grateful Dead. They were having as much fun as the audience lots of shows and that's why none of us wanted to go back home after experiencing them for the first time. What makes them in my opinion once again, THEE BEST LIVE ROCK BAND EVER, was the genuine love affair between us and them and the unmistakable, impossible for anyone to duplicate I don't care how talented they might be, was the pure raw unmistakable and obvious from the first notes of the first song they decided to open it with like literally when they are plugged in and tuned up and ready to give us some more pure honest genuine JOY of a Dead show. Man I ain't the only one by a lot but nothing I have ever taken drank smoked or slept with has ever made me feel better than a Dead show. There's music... good music... good live music I've enjoyed from other groups of course... but it's a distant second place, because then there's the Grateful Dead. Man I get it why some people were turned off by the name of the group, and the skeletons, and probably all the smiling joyful silly hippies there that didn't even have to get into the actual concert and were there feeling it again and again and again and again. I told my wife the other day that it's ridiculous looking at it from the outside and it really didn't matter if you managed to get a great Owsely dose, or were stone cold sober, you and the band and everyone else was high on the pure genuine joy of a Grateful Dead show. My only regret is that I was born about 10 years too late. But then again, it's not enough unless you were blessed to see every single show. And then that wouldn't be enough!! Wow that's a lot of typing for a old burntout Deadhead hippie like me but that's pretty much the only way I can attempt to tell someone about it. Yeah everybody is high!! On pure unmistakable genuine freaking joy. I honestly love the Grateful Dead and miss it like a lost family member. But omgosh the memories!! Sorry for being such a profound get to the point dude here but actually not sorry about anything else besides I, like so many others, didn't get a Ripple. Thanks for letting me ramble and I should probably shut up before I cry.... but it's not because of sadness I'm smiling too!! I'm gonna damn well keep truckin on until I can't and then I'll figure out how to get some cool shows when I get to the other side. Maybe even hangout with them if I can 👍✌️😎👋💯

I was listening to a dead show from 72 where bobby actually told a taper to back up about 20 rows if he wants a good recording most bands would throw them out and confiscate their equipment

    • @andywolf5403
      @andywolf5403 9 лет назад +6

Jonathan Socha That is very cool.
There is an interview where Bobby acknowledges that a lot of people counted on them touring as a way for those people to feed their kids. He also answered why they allowed bootlegging. His answer was very satisfying. Paraphrasing, but he said something like a lot of people, and I don't know why have had some very fond moments of joy at our shows. After the music is played it is in the ether so who are we to say it doesn't belong to whoever wants it? Are you going to try and see them this summer? Just three shows is what I've heard.

My spider web laced focus or favorite song that melts all dna all the time has been ALTHEA for a spell and a half. This one right here: 3/14/81 is an emasculate recoding and a sweet cut to see why it’s one of my jams!
    Enjoy
I dig it’s lyrics as much as any effort by them Dead and Jerry’s solos hit you 3 or 4 times , when on fire, it most definitely lands a few lightning bolts into the soul where they remind what u have one
Fav lyrics. Ain’t nobody messin with you but you
    More.:

PLEASE READ PLEASE READ PLEASE READ PLEASE READ!!!!!!!I’ve known of the Grateful Dead since my teens. I’ve heard a good bit of their music but I just now have had a spiritual awakening. I’ve watched the Long Strange Trip Doc. I’ve watched several interviews with Jerry Garcia and a couple where Bob Weir and maybe Phil Lesh. I love the documentary because they interview all the band members and managers and even roadies. I also love reading these posts put up by the dead heads. You people are really lucky to have been able to go to concerts. I wish I would have known what I know now in my teens and early twenties before Jerry died. I’ve watched some of the more recent concerts with Trey from Phish and John Mayer. It’s good but in my humble maybe not worthy opinion it’s just not close. I hesitate to even state my opinion here because I realize that most of the people on this feed are long time Grateful Dead fans. I love reading all of your stories of being at concerts. I feel more and more of a connection. I’m living my Grateful Dead trip vicariously through you all. I know I’m late to the party but please let me stay. I’ll just relax and mind my own business. I’m just happy to be here. I’m so thankful for ole 77 and people who post these live performances. I know I’ll never be a member or have a story to tell but I’m just happy

Just listen to at least one whole show every day. If able to find bootleg shows “tapers shows “ on cassette tape some have lots of noise but damn you’ll get a fell of being out in the audience so the show continuity and all the nuances makes it special that it really is.
Something that’s not there on CD or the dick pics, there’s the moment in it all that’s captured on the bootlegs audience noise and stadium

    • @jeanhartely
      @jeanhartely 9 лет назад +1

culls33 Did they love guns? This is an early picture-- kids playing around. There's a difference between recognizing the gun culture and singing about it, and actually liking it. I don't believe that the Dead were celebratory of violence.

culls33 Actually if you read Blair Jackson's GARCIA: AN AMERICAN LIFE he mentions jerrys love for guns and he collected them. He just never talked about it much. Blair was a close friend.

So watching the new Amazon documentary and Sen. Al Franken says that May 1980 Nassau Coliseum Althea contains the greatest of all Althea solos. It is awesome but makes me wonder how much debate there is on this, and which other Althea's share the pantheon. How many have you heard and which are the best?

    • @4and20blackbirds2
      @4and20blackbirds2 7 лет назад +4

I take this debate seriously and I contend the best is 3-28-81.

4and20blackbirds 3/28/81 rockpalast is #1 althea out there I've heard so far. And I've heard as many versions I could find. Alot! Love this one in a different way, I like the way the guitar tone was recorded and seems louder than the rest of the instruments on the track when jerry's soloing, love the screaming guitar on this althea

      1. 3/28/81 - Rockplast is the definitive version of this song
      2. Alpine 7/19/89 is a close 2nd
      3. This version - 3/14/81 a close 3rd

The versions from the1980 shows at Nassau collesium are actually way better sonically. There's a little to much compression in thus particular recording. Check it out and compare. I got a lot of joy doing it.

Try 10/14/83 Althea on for size. I'd like to find a taper version like I had. Much better than Dicks Picks with the live sound and crowd involvement.
