Lyrics:
I'm bad news, a black and blues-er
Who's a loser, a merry-go-round spiralling down
I'm all used up, I'm chaffed and chewed up
Who's just screwed up, the same old Charlie hitting the ground
'Cause I'll never be the soul of a man, noble and wise
Like the soul of a man who lifted me high
Like the soul of a man, heroic and true
Like the soul of a man that I looked up to
What else could I do?
Stupid hubris, no excuses
I blew my fuses, I guess I'm just a ruse in my father's shoes
Not amusin', no confusin' this streak of losin'
Totally brutal and useless too
How can I be the soul of a man, noble and wise
Like the soul of a man who lifted me high?
Like the soul of a man, heroic and true
Like the soul of a man that I looked up to
What else could I-
Just when I'm reaching for that rung at the top
On that broken heel steady, and ready, ready to drop
When will I be the soul of a man, noble and wise
Like the soul of a man who lifted me high?
Soul of a man, heroic and true
Like the soul of a man I looked up to
What else could I do?
I'll never be, no I'll never be
I have gone and let you down
Whoa, soul, soul of a man
Here comes that familiar sound
Same old Charlie hittin' the ground
(Ahhh!)

Why in the hell is everybody comparing Stark with Brendon? Brendon is indeed a great Charlie Price, but please don't compare Stark & Killian to other Charlie EVER!!!!!
People always say that Brendon's was less emotional, I didn't really understand that because Brendon is a singer and puts so much emotion into his singing. But now that I see this video I get the fact that Brendon is a singer first actor second so his performance is just as beautiful but Stark Stands is a musical actor and really puts a ton of emotion into his singing.
Yo Brendon is hands down my favorite singer ever.
But this song was literally written to match Starks voice and fit his own personal range. He can’t be singing it wrong 😂😂 and he is a singer y’all. He’s not acting the song out, he’s singing it 😂😂
Plus Brendon sang it a half step down.
@@saschahoupt6177 i agree this version is better, but singing it a half step lower doesn't make it worse?
brendon 🤢🤢
@@jeffreyamvs1240except is does 💀
@@Justindavis531 oh my bad
I hate to be that person, but I just hope y'all realize that Stark ORIGINATED THIS ROLE. Y'all cannot listen to Brendon's version and say that Stark sang it wrong when he is the original Charlie Price, HE was the original voice for Charlie Price. Y'all really need to learn how to respect your faves without bashing others. Trust me, I think Brendon is great, but no one will ever do a better Charlie Price than the original Charlie Price. Stark Sands is the Tony award nominee, not Brendon Urie.
Cailyn Charron Tony award *nominee. Billy actually won that year. But I agree with you.
Cailyn Charron Yeah they're both great but the original is always better. However,Brendon has had more singing experience while Stark is a musical actor so it's pretty understandable why people like Brendon's version better (This is still great and emotional though,no doubt about that)
Didn't realize people couldn't have opinions anymore. Look I love both and yes people can be better than the original. Example "And I Will Always Love You" was originally by Dolly Parton but the cover by Whitney Houston was way better. The reason I like Brendons version better is because he has more vocal experience and I prefer his voice more. Nobody is saying this version sucks they're saying they like Brens more.
while i agree that people shouldn't disrespect Stark as Charlie, you know, there *are* people (like myself!) who like Brendon's version better. Stark's voice is just not my cup of tea and Brendon's is, simple as that.
Tessa Mastro exactly.
Stark Sands is amazing. I never got to see him in the show but seeing all of these clips has made me such a fan of his.
See him at his Best :) in the Film: "Die, Mommie Die" ps. it's on RUclips
I find myself liking actors more when I didn't expect them to be singers. Damn. I love this song and listening to Stark makes me happy! :D
To be fair, a lot of actors did theatre before becoming actors, so they may have done a lot of singing
Corzify not everyone does musical theatre though. Some just do straight plays. But yeah it’s certainly more likely than if they’d never sang at all.
The emotion he puts in is incredible and his voice is fantastic. Damn this is a difficult song to perform and he totally nailed it. You can tell he really worked hard!
People need to stop saying he’s just an actor so it’s impressive how he can sing this. He’s trained in both departments and this song is clearly easy for him. He’s a brilliant singer and actor.
I love how casually he takes off the headphones and walks away at the end, as if he didn't just hit that note or sang an entire song the way he did
LOL exactly what I was thinking 😆
This is my favorite song from the show. I absolutely love Stark, and his voice crack at 2:43 gives me goosebumps. Perfection.
kawinski2 that wasn't a voice crack
kawinski2 What?
Okay, so I’m not the only one who noticed that
It was a "vocal transition" aka: "a vocal slide." 👍
I just want to bring Stark home and sing me to sleep every night.
I’m sorry but anyone who says he sings it wrong because they prefer Brendon’s version forgets that this was written perfectly for Stark’s voice. I’m a huuuge panic fan, but nobody will EVER top this version
saw them both but have to say Stark has the emotional depth to convey the power of the song. Both are amazing singing this. But Brendon was able to be in it because Stark gave such a fantastic performance when the show opened. His only problem with not winning the Tony for Best Actor was he was up against the other leading man Billy Porter. Talk about owning a role. Bottom line great singing by all and major kudos to Cindi Lauper. What a talent to put this all together. By far one of the best finales in a Broadway show in a long time.
his is absolutely my favorite song ever!
I have loved Stark Sands since American Idiot. What an incredible talent!!!
This is one of the BEST Musicals EVER!!!! Saw it twice!! Its that damn good!!! If they make a DVD of the show I will definitely buy it!
i would buy it too stark sands has one of the best voices i've ever heard
@@wreningber *raises hand*
I don't know why Brendon Urie's fans are so eager to throw Sands under the bus - I've seen some of his performances here on YT and while he might be a good singer his acting is nothing to write home about, and Sands is far better in the role imo.
I agree man
Glad it’s your opinion
I half agree, I love Brendon, probably more than love........But Stark is so much better when it comes to this and I love this version.
Brendon is my favourite singer but I prefer this version
One of the best performances on Broadway EVER!
A masterclass in modern musical performing. Chapeau to Stark, his vocal coach, band members, backup vocalists and musical director.
All of you Brendon stans need to learn that not everything has to be in a falsetto in order to be good and that bigger does NOT mean that it is better
I love brendon urie but no one in the world can top this performance
@@gabrielelusiani4467 where? Why hate like that?
True
@@gabrielelusiani4467 oh, i was focusing more on his diction and how, even singing, he is acting, not really his vocal range.
I like both their voices but having watched this, I also agree that as a theatrical performance, both physically and vocally, this one is better.
I HAVE to agree, and I ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Brendon and Panic! BUT, Stark originated and OWNS the role of Charlie Price. NOT even Brendon could do what Stark did with the role.
God that sweet bridge is so flippin AHMAZING & that key change! Cyndi surely made a hit! And Starks voice is like out of this world!
Absolutely phenomenal, utterly speechless
Stark is one of my favourite actors and has ben since i saw him in Generation Kill, i knew he had been in broadway shows but everytime i hear this song and Stark's version it makes me cry. Going to see the show in the west end in jan really wish Stark was doing it so jealous of everyone who got to see him on broadway
Cyndi Lauper is so underrated as a songwriter.
Stark is so talented.
The best Charlie Price, without a doubt
Love Stark’s voice in this. Gives me the chills
Can't believe some of you guys are saying other people who played the role of Charlie are better than Stark Sands his acting is spot on and he's a very talented singer I love him.Never saw him haven't seen the show yet but I'm seeing it on the West End in July this year can't wait I'm excited.
Love listening to Stark do this.
his voice is so rich... I love it
No one has ever, or will ever top Stark on this song.
HE'S COMING BACK TO KINKY BOOTS I AM SO EXCITED
What a set of pipes! Wow!
i love you Stark so talented
my favorite song in the musical. stark sands cried during this song which of course, brought me to tears as well. loved it
Also I love his smile at the end!
Wow Stark!! The way he conveyed the emotion in words.... Totally perfect!!
And those eyes......... Those eyes are mesmerizing!!
this is a fucking masterpiece...
I just love him so much
I was so moved seeing his performance on Broadway, I love it even more now!
이얼굴하고 이노래를 부르다니 그저감사 ㅜㅜ 노래찰떡이고 뮤비도 넘나좋다구 ㅜㅜ
Subtitle: A Lesson in Straight Tone (No Vibrato)
+Andy Butler A good, clean voice.
He does a lil vibrato in the beginning
Come back to this many times he's the best I just love is raw emotion
Beautiful man
Love, LOVE, the bridge to the key change. Great song!
Love his voice
Stark Sands last performance Kinky Boots Jan 26, 2014.
This is not goodbye, this is see you soon
They did come back!
I saw both of them live a few days ago! And they were so good! Stark pits so much emotion in his singing and its just amazing!
Even though I have not seen Kinky Boots and am not a fan of the musical yet, this song is AMAZING!!! Starks voice is just WOW and this is one of my new favorite songs! His voice was also amazing in American Idiot.
I'll be honest, I heard Brendon's version first, but I love this! And he's the original!! He sounds perfect! I don't understand anyone who would hate or dislike this.
i love panic and haven't heard this until after brendon's. trust that i love brendon's version for its power and vocals, but i also really like this version because i appreciate the really 80s rock tone he puts into the song which fits it in a different way than brendon's.
such an incredible song and he's got such an incredible voice
THIS IS SO AMAZING
Stark Sands....sigh. The most beautiful man on Broadway (starting with American Idiot - which I saw 6 times). The fact that he can sing like that is just not fair. And in Kinky Boots, his reign continues...
Stark is fantastic. Got to meet him after the show: great guy too
amazing talent!
I discovered Stark Sands through the Green Day Broadway Musical and I will never regret that.
Best song of the show❤️
Thanks to Brendon Urie for making me hear about this musical and stumbling across Stark Stands. Stark is absolutely amazing
I get goosebumps every time I listen to this
Billy Porter and Stark Sands Will Return to Broadway's Kinky Boots,
they return to the cast on September 26. Sands and Porter will remain with the show through January 7, 2018.
Can we all just stop for a second and appreciate the drummer- like damn me to buddy!
This gave me chills!!
So Amazing!!!!!!! I love him so much!!!!!!!!
Great singers !! Great performers!!! Just seen Killian Donnelly in London!! Same emotion , same great performance!! Loved everything about this wonderful musical !!
stark is an angel
Ahhh beautiful
My boyfriend took me to see this for my birthday and I'm absolutely obsessed with it! Best birthday present ever 💞 If only Stark played the Charlie where I was.
❤️🙌🏾 That song !!!
he is just so freaking talented. i love you stark TvT
Stark’s version IS the BEST version and it’s also the original. Brendon is FANTASTIC (and he DOES sing it half an octave lower than Stark does), but this is PHENOMENAL. The originator of the role is ALWAYS the best in it, at least this is what I have seen on Broadway. Just like we can’t imagine Elphaba without thinking of Idina Menzel the same is true here. You can’t think of Charlie Price without thinking of Stark Sands. When I sing this (and in it's original key it's an INSANE song to sing), it's Stark's version that I strive to emulate. He's ELECTRIC. NO ONE can top him.❤️😍
I've listen to both Stark Sands' version and Brendon's version several times. I have to say---I prefer Stark Sands' version by a wide margin.
This is literally amazing
I'm in love
Never seen the play love the song
스타크샌즈.. 다음생에는 나와 결혼.. 해달라..
Beautiful song...
ir watching gen kill and then learning abt kinky boots bc of stark. the perfect metaphor of my transition tbh ❤️🩹
i love thisss, y’all better stop disrespecting my boi and just start appreciating his AND brendon’s voice in this ok? ok
soul of a man is my favourite song i first heard brendons one but i think starks is way better. dont get me wrong; brendons performance was outstanding , but the original is most probably always better than the second. and the long note at 2:45 sounded more smooth then brendons. starks voice just fits better and brendons was still extraordinary and i cannot deny that.
Love this song my favorite one ever of the show ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Is it completely wrong that i cried while watching this... :( he's honestly my everything. I like am in love with you stark sands.
this was even better live
Good song
The best
my favorite song
Im steel here... love stark....♡
This song brings back so many middle school memories ugh
SO GOOD
I saw Brendon three times and he was great, but I honestly prefer Stark.
brendon is gonna kill this
kill it bad or kill it good? ;)
Someone Strange good obviously!!

this is amazing. broadway should stop hiring nonprofessional actors.
Don't make me cry over and over again, mr Sands.
Cindy Lauper is brilliant, and HIS VOICE *_______________*
I have no choice but to stan
I love his voice om
I love this song
When he raised his hands in 1:53, it reminded me so strongly of brent carver in his tony performance for parade
Stark Sands did THAT
