Agree. I play a Strat Copy. About 15 years ago traded. a circa 62 mustang Tele for a more modern stat.. I wish I didn't..it was all scratched bruised..and natural wood with stain.
You have obviously devoted your life at some stage to play as well as you do . Thanks for sharing these tutorials for some of us, I.E. me, who cannot get out as much due to ill health.
I worked with James Burton right after "Travelin Man" became a monster smash. We were all very young at the time and Jerry Fuller who wrote "Travelin" was on the show. I begged him to let me sing ,"Travelin,". He let me do his hit (Ricky's). I then met James. (He looked exactly like the OZZIE & HARRIET SHOW, etc,) It sounded just like the record. (Same band as on TV). This was in Hollywood.
Best, easiest to follow, instructional video I've found to date. Most videos are far too esoteric. We watch instructional videos to learn how to play, ot to watch someone grandstand. Five stars to you
It has a bit of a Nocaster blond kind of color, which you find in the recent Nocasters from the Fender Custom Shop. I believed it was one until I saw the “Telecaster” on the heads logo. Great lesson in any case and great sounding guitar.
Tele is my favorite. electric 🎸. Started my musical journey around "62.. Started on Uke and various instruments. Spend hours every day ..think that's pretty. Typical for musicians.
Very nice petal steel sound! Since I started following you, have had many wonderful cohesive notes coming forth from my amps. Makes a bloke feel so proud. Cheerio, Mate!
Wow! You play great. I'm very impressed with how smooth and fluid your playing is. This is a style I've always wanted to learn. I'm looking forward to working with your lessons. Thank you!!
Interesting story of James Burton....he was paramount in Ernie Ball using different gauage strings because Burton used banjo strings on the first 4 high strings and moved his "D" to A and "A" to low E.....his gauges are 9 10 12 24 32 38 Now using 40 for Low E........Ernie Ball asked him to his store to talk about his sound and they came up with using different gauages.....
In the early 60s Dave Wendels of Cliff Bennett & the Rebel Rousers- often considered one of the UK's best ever bands went to the USA and met James Burton. When he returned an army of aspiring guitarists besieged him to ask how James did what he did. Now, folk can tune into talented guys like this man and see it allso clearly. In that respect it has all got a zillion times easier. I managed to meet James at a Billy Swann concert, a number of years ago. I got lucky- he sneaked up on me in the audience on his way to the stage after Billy had started the show.
Great lesson Adrian, thanks. I was lucky enough to see the great Albert Lee last year, simply the best country guitarist ever. Still no idea how he does it.
Andrew Moody Hi Andrew, thanks a lot, glad you like it. Yes, Albert Lee is phenomenal, definitely one of my favourite players in this style. I'd love to see him live one day.
Adrian, this lick opened some doors for me. I still can’t get the hybrid picking part to sound quite right, but I have been able to move the lick to different keys and have great fun with it. Can you please do more country style lick lessons?
Hi Adrian...Great lick ala Mr Burton style, I think you are one of the most tasteful & accurate players of this style on here with a gorgeous Tele tone, I have been a fan of JB for many years & was wondering if you possible you could break down that lick he uses in the key of E....at the end of Emmylou Harris tune called ...Ooh Las Vegas, and he also used it on Elvis... Mystery Train & What'd I say in the mid 70's shows he did with Elvis???....I know he calls it a crossfinger lick & I do have his instructional video but cant quite catch what he's doing on this lick also ( Maybe its me!!...Lol ) the tab doesn't seem to match the lick....Keep on PIckin Buddy....Regards Tony B, Swansea, UK....:)
thank you much for this! just got into country stuff, you made chicken' picking very easy to learn; I was wondering how you got the "muted" note sounds---palm muting, I should have guessed! ^^ Just watching you play is improving my playing by the way :) and I like that you take your time in the lessons, makes a big difference :)
WOW ! i'm having fun learning this lick ! It,s one of my favorite licks also used a lot by the great Marty stuart ! What is your rig and amp settings to get this amazing tone ?
And James Burton i believe had a b bender and a g bender to get those great pedal steel bends. Also what effect are you using to get that water dripping sound?
Hi- could you possibly do a lesson for Steve Cropper's guitar on "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the The Bay", Otis Redding, please? Thanks, your lessons are great, really really helpful.
Good Lesson but what amplifier are you using . I am an acoustic Player who is moving into electric . I do lots of songs and am originally from the South but I love the British Rock from the Early 60's all the way up to the mid 80's . I also do a lot of Old School Country such as El Paso by Marty Robbins and I take a lot of Pride in What I Am by Merle Haggard . I am interested in Chicken Pickin and Teles but I need to learn more about amps. Thank You !
You need a Fender with 6L6 tubes for American country. The opposite kind of amp is a Vox from British early 60s rock with EL 84 tuibes. Look for a Fender Super Champ X2 at least. Buy a tube/valve amp. Most on the market are meant to sound dirty. A few Fenders (not all) and the Ibanez TSA15 give good fendery cleans for country, indie, etc.
Dag Nabbit a Vox style amp is also used in a good deal in country. Brad Paisley used a boutique amp by a builder named Tony Bruno. It’s his take on the AC30, the Underground 30. That chime is paramount in bright playing.
Your lessons are always awesome! Is that an early '90s telecaster? I have an early '90's strat with the same gloss finish on the neck with similar wear marks..
Im a US tele player. Your playing is great. Always clean, no missed notes, and never sloppy.
Agree. I play a Strat Copy. About 15 years ago traded. a circa 62 mustang Tele for a more modern stat.. I wish I didn't..it was all scratched bruised..and natural wood with stain.
You're consistently my favorite ,both to hear and to learn from... been playing rock 50 years, got bit by country bug
You have obviously devoted your life at some stage to play as well as you do . Thanks for sharing these tutorials for some of us, I.E. me, who cannot get out as much due to ill health.
Not only a great lick, but a perfect tone for that style! Bravo!
Another great video Adrian.
I’m learning this style at this time, so keep more country licks coming!
Best, easiest to follow, instructional video I've found to date. Most videos are far too esoteric. We watch instructional videos to learn how to play, ot to watch someone grandstand. Five stars to you

Thanks. It's a US '52 reissue. Got it in the early 1990s, so it's around 20 years old.
I got one too! Mine's one of the first '52 re-issues from '82, when I bought it new.
It has a bit of a Nocaster blond kind of color, which you find in the recent Nocasters from the Fender Custom Shop. I believed it was one until I saw the “Telecaster” on the heads logo. Great lesson in any case and great sounding guitar.
Thank you so much for this lesson. Great lick, great playing, great teacher! Most excellent.
Watched a black and white night, that's what bought me here, what a way to pick my tele back up again! Great stuff Adrian!

Friend, I bet you could find steady session work in Nashville.
Excellent playing. I've been looking at this vid for days now, trying to perfect this lick. I love it. THANK YOU MAN. Keep on picking.
It is one of those licks that has to be near perfect or it does not sound right.
I had to run over this.umpteen times. I play this style ..but my.version is different. I downloaded the tabs. Thank You. Excellent.sheet music.
Tasty lick. I learned it and it sounds great at double the speed and followed by a major/minor speed run. Thanks.

Briefly played one of James Burton's Teles several years ago. It's strings were indeed very light.
You have an excellent teaching style and taste in music. Much obliged good sir

Hot Damn and a he'll yes ! Thanks man !
Hello, you're great. How do I get the distortion that James used in mistery train and promised land? And do I even feel a distortion in others?
Great lesson. BTW, what is the name of that chord you do on the end of the opening demo? It must be some kind of E chord.
i apologise if you have already answered such a question but:
what gauge strings?
what amp
and what effects are going between guitar amp?
Your lessons are always awesome! Is that an early '90s telecaster? I have an early '90's strat with the same gloss finish on the neck with similar wear marks..
Thank You!

Hi, do you use a pedal? You have a nice sound a bit

Sweet ! Now to get it into a song on stage....
+Carl Rudd Yes! Do it - better than just learning the lick is to get it into your own playing and make it your own.
