There's actually several way old games that look better than hundreds of games that came after, in the entire following 2 consoles worth of catalogues. The reason is the artists who made the designs, colors, light, shadows, textures and everything were BETTER than the artists on the projects that followed. There are times where for instance Tekken Tag 1 looks WAY superior to several sequels of Tekken just due to artistic design and intelligent use of Bump Mapping (which simulated the light bouncing off surfaces as if they had texture, grit, depth etc, really amazing yet simple tech). If you look at Tekken 4, 5 and Tag 2, they all have pretty bad levels and colors etc. All they have is more polygons, not ACTUALLY better design, it's crazy 😂 Not a single one of them have some of the amazing levels of Tag 1. Crazy. Artists make a huge difference. And Intelligent artists make a WORLD of difference.
@SammEater when games were ported on all 3 consoles of ps2, gamecube and xbox the xbox usually had the best ports. It has the best port of def jam ffny
I’ve always wished this series get more respect. Yeah it’s cheesecake but it’s not pretentious. It tries to be fun first and foremost and I’ve always loved the flow of this series. It goes back and forth in an instant like a real fight.
Agreed. Not every game has to be serious with super realistic characters. I think the fan service is a bit much in DOA, but the actual gameplay is very fun, imo. I had never played this game prior to making this video, but I had so much fun messing around in training mode that I decided to make some content revolving around this game
@@khanage1344not going to lie doa 5 over did it with the sweating and the poses after a victory and deep breathing but other then that doa isn't that bad and the game mechanics hold up VERY Well better then what most people would expect
21 years old and this game has accurate reflections, realistic water rendering, snow physics, hair physics, cloth physics and jiggle physics, all that apart from looking stunning, i generally never cared much for fighting games but the obsession with beauty of the DOA games just drew me in, from the characters to the stages, nothing is left unattended, even on 3ds they managed to fit a game that looked like it belonged on the Xbox, i think only Capcom can equal such achievements with RE4 and RE Remake on Gamecube and RE Revelations on 3ds, all of wich still hold beautifully.
Halo combat evolved was the first ever first person shooter with a mmo feel too it because of how HUGEEE the maps were they literally put you into the universe of halo as a 8 year old I will damn near say that game alone changed my life forever
Fun fact: if you beat Dead Or Alive Ultimate on the Xbox and unlock every costume in the game (I think there were 137!), you get a file you can download to your memory card (yes, the Xbox had them) that would give you additional costumes for Dead Or Alive 3. This was super weird even at the time. My favorite was the viking costume for Bass. Was this the first DLC in gaming? I don't know, but the fact that they put in the effort to make things like this showed the skill, love, and outright mania that Team Ninja had in those times. Too bad things ended the way they did.
The graphics and gameplay in 2001 were both mind blowing, I remember being amazed at the transitions when you knock people from one area to another. This is easily the best Xbox game in hindsight for a lot of reasons
This was the biggest jump in graphics that I noticed since I started gaming on the 2600. I was a huge fan of DOA2 but I didn't yet have an Xbox. Then I saw DOA3 playing in a Walmart and it was so good looking that I decided right there to buy the console. I believe the graphical upgrade to the backgrounds was just as important as the characters. Team Ninja was an absolute force back then.
The artstyle definitelly helped this game age well, the stages look even more impressive than the ones DOA5/6. Specially that one stage with dynamic snow or the one with the reflective floor.
The series could be considered Xbox exclusive until DOA4, since the Microsoft console got the definitive version of DOA1 and DOA2 with the Ultimate Releases, plus it also got 2 DOAX titles, then Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 used to be exclusive, man I miss those days were exclusives were great on Xbox, btw my favorite character is Helena...
There is something odd about the Xbox One/Series X version of the game. If you install the PAL version you get almost all of the costumes right off the bat, even though in that version you need to unlock them all, and not just install the Booster Disk. However you can unlock them normally, so you may end up with duplicate costumes. Kasumi has 7 costumes, because I normally unlocked the 2 extra ones, but upon start up you already have them. It’s just sort of weird, but that is how it works. If your playing the Japanese or PAL version and you get duplicates it’s because you managed to unlock them normally, even though the game starts you with them already unlocked.
I remember picking this up from the resale games section, seeing a Bruce Lee inspired character on the front instantly sold me on it. Having a Xbox instead of PS2 I really felt like I was missing out on Tekken but I soon forgot about it.
Doa is such a different experience it's not like tekken, it's not like street fighter, it's not like virtual fighter, it's it's own entity and I think that's one reason that it stands in it's own league
Thanks to Xbox Series X backwards compatibility and a lucky find, I was able to experience DOA3 for the first time this year and yeah... I was amazed this was a Gen 6 game. It controlled super smooth and looked stunning. 2:57 - Bayman stands out to me because his orange jacket and scuba diving alternative costume makes me think of Action Man figures... that and my younger brother has a grudge against DOA4 CPU Bayman and his insane counters. 8:07 - I remember someone describing DOA's ease of entry as a fighter that allows you to feel awesome and pull off awesome moves from the get-go. This was a fun, nicely summarised review of the game with plenty of great jokes and well deserved praise for best girl 10:21 of the series.
Thanks for watching! It's amazing that this game is on modern Xbox systems so more people can play it. I'm glad that you liked the video! Hitomi is forever best girl
@@khanage1344 Agreed; I was lucky to find DOA3 so easily. In terms of other backwards compatible games, I'm still searching for Blinx the Cat. Hitomi eternally best girl indeed!
2/ 2U and 3 are my favourites! You have no idea how much I was playing the game series back and forth when back in 2015, literally costed my grades to go down lol! Missed them days
I remember playing it. It still so fast, the graphics are still great. My favourite part of this game is the Tag Team fighting. Executing long Tag Team combos in DOA3 was and still is the best. Even Tekken Tag Tournament came after this, and it was never this good.
Say what you must about story, but the opening cinematic for 2U is one of the best (if not the best?) I've seen for a fighting game. I wonder if the big reason it took so long to be added into backwards compatibility was due to organising the licensing for the various cinematics. Especially Aerosmith in 2U
Yeah, it's a shame DOA gets a bad wrap due to the spin-offs. I actually like most of the main installments, and not for the bewbs, but because I think they're fun games. DOA3 was my gateway into the series, and it immediately became one of my top fighter franchises. I've always hated the complex inputs and special-spamming of other fighting games, like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Like, why bother punching and kicking when you can hurl fireballs across the screen all day? DOA sets a very high bar in accessibility with its minimalist inputs, partially shared move-sets across all characters, and zero ranged specials to abuse. It's very easy to learn, and is made even easier with the intuitive tutorial mode. Good game design invites new players, not gate-keeps with a hard learning curve. I also never liked Tekken or Virtua Fighter because of how incredibly slow they are. Dead or Alive is _FAST,_ and you can sometimes get up in your opponent's face and go to town on combos, when other fighting games forcefully push your opponent's back, making it difficult to actually keep your momentum going. But you still gotta be careful because of the rock-paper-scissors mechanics between strikes, reversals, and grapples. If you punch or kick all the time, your opponent is going to punish you with reversals. That is depth in a fighting game, and makes DOA more than just a simple button-masher. All that said, I'm still a dude and I'm not ashamed to admit I like tits and ass. The sex appeal is a nice bonus, but I've never paid extra for it, and never will (looking at you DOA5). My point is, games don't have to be edge-lords to be good. But also look at Taki from Soulcalibur, Cammy from SF, and Kitana from MK and try to tell me those games haven't dipped their hand into sex appeal. It's a double standard.
This and DoA4 are pretty underrated. I think these are some of the best fighting games for casual play, movement is really fluid, the mechanics are really easy to understand and you can do plenty of flashy combos without too much effort.
Never understood the criticism for this series just cause "boobs". High level play can be VERY deep and ironically because of the simplistic reversal system. People just never wanted to give it a shot though cause of stuff like Tekken and SF taking the spotlight.
Low hanging fruit. Social engineering + DoA6 died because they got greedy with their nasty fanbase. DLC total was $1000+ if you bought every single MTX.
Gotta respect someone who appreciates the gilded goddess that is Helena, the only french person that matters. Also iirc there is a story from the "trust me bro" source, that Itagaki also went to MS to give the exclusivity to his new games, because someone at Sony yoinked an early version of DOA 2 Hardcore and that is the reason why the game can look somewhat unpolished because Sony didn't let it stay in the oven a little longer and Itagaki felt they compromised his artistic vision or something, so he went to the Americans to spite Sony, and some of those Bills from Gates must have come in handy during development.
I remember having this game a long time ago when I had a Xbox and not really knowing what to do but mash and have fun as a kid. It was great and it was technically my very first fighting game that I played. Now that I am older aka 19 and have played fighting games for quite some time now, I believe it is time for me to revisit a game of my childhood! Great review btw.
If only this game were available on Playstation 5 as a download, I'd certainly be willing enough to try it out. The combat actually looks super fun and honestly I'm just a big fighting game fan to begin with so hearing about a good fighting game immediately makes me want to check it out regardless.
'nobody cares about this game plot' then there's me who was discribing the plot, esp doa3's b/c that's the one i played religiously, to my boyfriend who i got to play doa extreme 2 and doa5 with me and each time a character i knew came up i'd give their entire backstory. it may be a booba game, but i liked its plot as much as its fighting system. really didn't care about the tata's.
It is better to play either the UK version or the Japanese version of Dead or Alive 3 since they are better and they offer a lot more than the American version. They both are downloadable on the American Xbox Series X and Xbox One. Here's a link to a video on how to download the UK and Japanese versions: ruclips.net/video/VyPOQgju-6I/видео.html
From what I’ve heard 3.1 is the most liked by the competitive scene, but 3.2 is the most balanced and is the one used for tournament play. 3.1 has the best free stepping which is why it’s the most liked, but Hayate’s cartwheel move is completely broken. 3.2 fixed that move, but comes with a worse version of free stepping. I personally installed 3.2, because it is the one used in tournaments, but you can install 3.1 if you want. It demands on want you would rather take.
I remember playing this a lot, trying to get all the trials done. I was curious to see how well the graphics were for the time. It's crazy how some of these older games still have nice graphics (Ninja Gaiden, MGS, Halo, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros. Melee, to name a few) Sure the animations might look a little clunky sometimes, but for 20 years ago, it's still kinda mindblowing. Side note, damn, a lot of these characters feet look abnormally large. Maybe it's some conversion if you're showing it on a newer Xbox and it got stretched or something, but I just happened to notice lol.
I *NEVER* noticed the *HUGE* guns. I was impressed with the fighting style mechanics. However, when I played DOA 5 the *jiggle* mechanics *STAYED* on lol
I also like how the XBOX got version of DOA2 with the engine of the third game. It is so different from the Dreamcast and PS2 ports. Shame that a part of the soundtrack was removed. So all those kickass rock songs like the opening theme and the gallery theme are no longer there.
Great memories. Played it daily with a friend, and it almost always ended in a IRL fight between us 😆 We knew each others tactics inside out so it was left to chance who would win.
The story of DOA 1-4 is actually very mature and well written, especially when compared to Tekken, Street Fighter and the rest of its kind. I wish you would have actually brought awareness to that. Always annoying when RUclipsrs just “haha boobs and bashing” to paint this false picture of the franchise. It’s disingenuous and hurtful to the games. Good video otherwise. DOA is one of my favorite franchises ever and 3 was my introduction back when it first came out. Spent countless hours playing it with my sister and we both became lifelong fans of the series.
I'm aware that Dead or Alive has a long running story, but my idea for this video was to have a bit of a cheeky tone. Originally, my idea was to actually explain the story, but I decided against it as I thought the video would have been a bit too long if I spent 5-10 minutes explaining it all
Damn making me sad when you mentioned it was 21 years ago... I remember loving DOA3 when it released and the DOA Ultimate collection for the Xbox. Spent countless hours grinding to unlock costumes and everything.
Helena is top waifu... I never liked fighting games but her style, her design were able to sell me DOA2. And i become fan ever since. It was so long ago... P.S. And yes, the combat mechanics in DOA are better than Tekken.
DOA has the best throws and counters in fighting games, fast, type of a mind game, the impacts feel awesome, the story is great and the characters look amazing, I do not know why people have to apologize for the game having sex appeal, they look great, are beautiful and allow them to have Venus and other products that sell, there is no need to separate game and looks, that's part of the game, and the completion of Ayane's story is amazing redeemed and taken as the main character.
I agree this game looks amazing and even better on series x, i actually have well over 800 games and get overwhelmed at what to play so i came up with an idea, i wrote down all my original xbox games and googled there release dates and wrote in order of release, once i do them all in order i will do the same with my 360 library followed by xbox one then xbox enhanced games. I started it this weekend with my first 3 games that all released the same day november 11 2001, the 3 games are ea sports nbalive 2002 which i admit many glitches and not very pretty on the eyes, the other was this dead or alive 3 which i unlocked all ending movies in just under 2 hours and finally oddworld munch's oddysee. Once all are done i will be onto Max Payne. Just wanted to try some nostalgia so as i get more in my list i can appreciate the better graphics as i go along.
I never owned an XBox so I missed out on those exclusives, and I think DOA is a great fighting game but unfortunately the fanservice has proven to be its biggest strength and its major weakness. If it wasn't for the fanservice or lack of it in DOA6 maybe it would have continued to thrive into the present day. For now it seems like the franchise is DNA - dead not alive.
I still prefer 2 (Hardcore) it's my favorite in the series. Due to the xbox exclusivity, I was got to play 3 or xbox port of 2. I was actaully really invested in Ayane's character arc, so I need to play this one day. I miss the anime style of the characters that was lost in 4
Also DOA is the only series I feel like gets unappreciated due to the costumes and fan service but if people take the time and play it’s a really SOLID fighting game I actually have DOA over tekken because DOA takes actual skill and the analog stick controls literally every part of the characters body
For the hell of me I still dont see this "crazy boob content" that people raising hell about. It's all tame and is for 13 year old boys. Some of the endings in later installments had a defeat pose where you can move the camera around them is awkward but other than that, it's not like we havent seen this in all games since Street Fighter. Either way, I love this game! It's perfect amount of skill and arcadiness and mostly, it's SUPER FUN!
Doa was the first game I got in the original Xbox back in 2003 and I must say team ninja made a master piece with this series not over sexualizing the characters while still giving you costumes that allow you to express yourself I'm so glad they didn't go the soul calibur route and allow players to Customize their characters because people abuse the freedom and add NSFW content team ninja is amazing
Agreed, though the unlockable endings for 4 were OTT on fan service. The unlockable endings for 3 struck a great balance. The endings of 3 with the difficulty of 4 would be best.
This game and virtua fighter and tekken was and still my best fighting games, i couldn't get the PlayStation2 or Xbox because my parents didn't buy it for me just to avoid spending money. Some parents don't understand their children's need for this fantastic gaming console. At that time fighting games was only for the consoles that is the problem
9:45 One thing I don't understand about Games is that people talk about ray tracing reflecting surfaces etc, hardware intensive graphical stuff, yet here, at 9:45, we clearly have reflective surfaces on a wooden floor easily done on a first generation Xbox in 2001 😐 The graphical artists and tech guys certainly didn't become smarter over time. I don't know why they don't use the OLD solutions that worked 20 years ago and took WAY LESS CPU power to do. If they did, that would allow game devs to actually make innovative games with way more destruction, way more characters on screen etc. Instead they focus on just making the SAME games over and over with more polygons and intensive CPU effects 🤦🏻♂ So stupid. The gameplay never changes, it's so boring.
Those reflections are well faked, but they are incorrect. If you want to look into it, do some research into forward rendering vs deferred rendering, the old apprach had quite a few limitations. I wish we would see more changes with gameplay, as that part of videogames barely changed the last two decades, but your examples of "more destruction" and "more characters on screen" isn't it chief.
DOA 3 was my least favorite of the series. I just never liked it. I thought it was cheaper than the others and it just doesn’t have the charisma of 2 or 4. Just my opinion.
actually it's koeitecmo's business practices that aren't compatible with modern gaming journos, about the only post-release mainstream attention doa 6 got was "holy crap look at these misers selling hair colors for a dollar".
after dead or alive 4 tecmo ruined the franchise with their ridiculous releases and abysmal dlc so much so that the average person doesn’t even know what version is what. Graphics and gameplay are good but it is terrible how sad and greedy they got if only they would have come up with a better distribution model for their content this series would be up there with the best of the genre.
button mashers are unpredictable and annoying, plague of fighting games... i quit my career because of button mashers and smmmers...like stanger kick king spammers back on tekken 6
Bro, please, Xbox games did NOT look better than PS2 games...LOL! Raw clock speed numbers do not a full story make, my man. (shit, the GameCube had, by far, the best looking graphics of the three systems of the day!) Xbox never has had, and never WILL have the things you need to succeed as a platform: standout exclusives in volume. (shrugs)
23 years and kicking. Foolishly didn't pick up for og xb - corrected 4 series x. Anyone interested in v'ball google DEAD OR ALIVE XTREME BEACH VOLLEYBALL - TROPICAL BLUE. My fanfic
I'm still in awe that graphics this good were possible in 2001.
Same here! The Xbox truly was a powerhouse
The XBOX had a lot of power, the only problem is that it lacked the big library of the PS2. Still nice that it had the best versions of TimeSplitters.

They really improved over time and in DOA5 they nailed the fighting mechanics and body movements utilizing the left analog stick
DOA2-DOA4 was the hay day of the series, imho. I still have my old DOA3 disc, so I’m gonna have to see what happens if I pop it into my Xbone.
I also like how the XBOX got version of DOA2 with the engine of the third game. It is so different from the Dreamcast and PS2 ports. Shame that a part of the soundtrack was removed. So all those kickass rock songs like the opening theme and the gallery theme are no longer there.
Great memories. Played it daily with a friend, and it almost always ended in a IRL fight between us 😆
We knew each others tactics inside out so it was left to chance who would win.
Originally, my idea was to actually explain the story, but I decided against it as I thought the video would have been a bit too long if I spent 5-10 minutes explaining it all
@@khanage1344 thanks for the response and explanation ❤️
@@alexandermckay9521 Of course! Thanks for leaving a comment in the first place :)
Damn making me sad when you mentioned it was 21 years ago... I remember loving DOA3 when it released and the DOA Ultimate collection for the Xbox. Spent countless hours grinding to unlock costumes and everything.
I remember the video long ago you did a great job❤
Thank you very much!
@@khanage1344 np watching this makes me sad because they went dark with DOA I've been collecting the games again hopefully u make another DOA vid
@@RealKame I actually played Dead or Alive 4 yesterday at my fighting game locals and it was really fun! So I'd love to cover that game one day
Helena is top waifu...
Tekken 3 is still holds up too.
And has more single player modes than 8.
Have you seen street fighter costumes? Way more horny and ridiculous than this game at times and nobody says anything.. lol
Probably the most underrated DOA game. It seems it's usually overshadowed by DOA2. I prefer DOA3, to be honest.
I agree with you about Helena 😌 that earned a subscriber
THANK YOU, i grew up with this game and im still wishing for a rerelease for Playstation, i love the other games but 3 is my personal favorite
I swear I didn't play the game just to see Leifang in tight leather clothes....I swear
I just ordered Dead or alive 3
Have fun!
Incredible game
The narration is way too good lol, the “boobs and brawling” or the Pentium III's processing part are priceless. x)
This series sparks joy, and deserves justice, booba fighter 4 ever
My childhood game with my dad❤️
Great video
Thank you!
Love this game
panzer dragoon is something everyone thinks of as a sega saturn/dreamcast exclusive in my mind, same with jsr
Finally a retrospective without a bunch of apologies for beautiful women being in the game, thank you.
Hey Tina is your favorite character too? That's nice
Yep. I love pro wrestling characters in fighting games, so Tina is my favourite
I feel like ninja gaiden and doa were ahead of their time I literally as I kid felt like those two games were damn near perfect
Dead or Alive 3's Arcade campaign is so easy compared to literally every other game in the franchise. I think 4 or 2 is better.
Agreed, though the unlockable endings for 4 were OTT on fan service. The unlockable endings for 3 struck a great balance. The endings of 3 with the difficulty of 4 would be best.
I guess you only played the North American version when you should've played the Japanese or European version which are harder.
I want doa3 pc version so badly
For 2001 these graphics were really advanced
As a baby 🚬 🐐 theses series had me v confused especially the iconic extreme beach volleyball
Im one of the 5 people that actually like the story for this game lol
9:45
One thing I don't understand about Games is that people talk about ray tracing reflecting surfaces etc, hardware intensive graphical stuff, yet here, at 9:45, we clearly have reflective surfaces on a wooden floor easily done on a first generation Xbox in 2001 😐
The graphical artists and tech guys certainly didn't become smarter over time. I don't know why they don't use the OLD solutions that worked 20 years ago and took WAY LESS CPU power to do.
If they did, that would allow game devs to actually make innovative games with way more destruction, way more characters on screen etc.
Instead they focus on just making the SAME games over and over with more polygons and intensive CPU effects 🤦🏻♂
So stupid.
If only volleyball was backwards compatible 💀
I was annoyed by the lack of costumes in doa 3 lol
Me too. It was one of the best things with DOA2 ultimate, unlocking each costume.
Kasumi the main character lol
that google translation for Baka gajin is really wrong. baka is idiot and gajin is a slur. Gaikokujin is forigener
That’s the joke
Hitomi was great in DOA 3, 4 and Hardcore.. but they really made her look awful in 5. 6 was bad on her too.
Hitomi was in ultimate but not hard core.
@@TheSoloReactorYeah I think you're right. Thanks.
I'm a casual gamer in general getting good at games is stupid rather get good/practice literally anything else
DOA5 is peak. DOA6 is garbage
*Ultimate has bypassed this now!* 😂
hitomi is cute!
>Tina main
Man of culture.
DOA 3 was my least favorite of the series. I just never liked it. I thought it was cheaper than the others and it just doesn’t have the charisma of 2 or 4. Just my opinion.
I respect it! I've still gotta play DOA4 cause I heard it was pretty good.
DOA3 may be complatable with modern day gaming systems but it isn't compatible with modern day gaming journalists.
actually it's koeitecmo's business practices that aren't compatible with modern gaming journos, about the only post-release mainstream attention doa 6 got was "holy crap look at these misers selling hair colors for a dollar".
Bayman is in Ninja Gaiden 3
Hitomi makes me dreaaaamy
DOE3 the best ever!!!
after dead or alive 4 tecmo ruined the franchise with their ridiculous releases and abysmal dlc so much so that the average person doesn’t even know what version is what. Graphics and gameplay are good but it is terrible how sad and greedy they got if only they would have come up with a better distribution model for their content this series would be up
there with the best of the genre.
Kasumi top tier Helena no sorry mate
button mashers are unpredictable and annoying, plague of fighting games... i quit my career because of button mashers and smmmers...like stanger kick king spammers back on tekken 6
Bro, please, Xbox games did NOT look better than PS2 games...LOL! Raw clock speed numbers do not a full story make, my man. (shit, the GameCube had, by far, the best looking graphics of the three systems of the day!)
Xbox never has had, and never WILL have the things you need to succeed as a platform: standout exclusives in volume. (shrugs)
Everyone out here stanning the female characters while Iam here proud as a girl maining Ryu haha
Itagaki pushed the developments for this game so hard cuz he knew it was gonna be on the Xbox!🤣🤣 Dude was smitten with the Xbox on the first day
23 years and kicking. Foolishly didn't pick up for og xb - corrected 4 series x. Anyone interested in v'ball google DEAD OR ALIVE XTREME BEACH VOLLEYBALL - TROPICAL BLUE. My fanfic
patriotic all-american bill gates hamburger system made me laugh😂
