  • Unlike many record stars whose singing career had peaked during the 1940s and 1950s, when Dorothy Squires made a surprise chart comeback with 'Say It With Flowers' in 1961 - she still had a further two decades of hit records, TV appearances and sell-out concerts to look forward to. There was unfortunately much sadness in her life too during those years - an acrimonious break up of her marriage to actor, Roger Moore, a fire which destroyed her home, battles with drink, court cases over various issues and eventually bankruptcy. Dorothy, however, was nothing if not a trouper - and her loyal fan base ensured that she would continue to perform until old age and illness took its toll. She died in 1998 aged 83. Let's not overlook the contribution that Russ Conway made to the success of 'Say It With Flowers' with his tasteful piano accompaniment to Dorothy's vocal, on both the original hit record and this TV appearance.

the most wonderful artist. Some of the most memorable concerts I have seen were those of Dorothy Squires. It is such a shame that her actual concerts were never filmed at Carnegie Hall, The Barbican, Theatre Royal, Drury Lane and so many more. There were moments of sheer artistic brillance.

In her later years her critics said she`s had it So what did she do well she hired out the London Palladium and had sell out performances. She was made of grit and determination coupled with great talent

One of the great female singers to come from Wales,She was a big star in her day both sides of the pond.
She had a very rocky personal private life, with a sad ending.
She was one of my late father's favourite singers, I have a good collection of her albums, I have listened to most of her songs, they are mostly love songs or romantic numbers , Dorothy always sung with bags of emotion , she will never be forgotten, her memory will live on . RIP

At the end of her career here . Nightmare to work with by people who knew her well . A lady for her time .

You only ever hear those stories about Female Singers.
Plenty of Male Singers like Rod Stewart and John Lennon were "nightmares to work with"...but when men act like brats they are just called: "confident" and "strong-willed".
Whenever a female singer is confident or strong-willed, she is labeled a diva or a "nightmare".
      Sexist!

Dorothy Squires was married to Roger Moore. The expression “friend of Dorothy” came from Moore’s disassociation of Squires many Gay admirers.

Really Victor, I've never heard that said before. I always thought the saying came from Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and the especially the gay men's love for Judy Garland.

I don't mind Russ Conway but my gosh he was over the top here and, for me, it spoilt Dots performance, great though she was.

  • @Prolinium

Dorothy will always have a steadfast fan group, and you're loyal to the core. However, as for not doing my homework - I have been involved with the realistic facts within the music industry for many years. I am not wrong. A stickler for professionalism doesn't state that she 'hopes she can remember the words' no fewer than 3 times on one live album. She gave many audiences wonderful nights on stage. So do many cabaret acts !! She was not a big star.

  • @Prolinium
    @Prolinium 11 лет назад

She had the flair - but sadly lacked the professionalism. She never really made it, but gave it her all. Good to listen to, nevertheless.

In my Opinion Dorothy Squire's was a better singer than Miss Shirley Bassey.
Now here the thing Both where Welsh from South Wales and Dame Shirley Bassey. Modeled herself on her if you notice the dress wear and arms
