    I have been using a homemade mixture of equal parts borax and baking soda for my regular washing detergent for years. Works just as good as the expensive detergents and I use plain distilled vinegar for the fabric softener. Works great and is A LOT cheaper than buying laundry soap and fabric softener. Great tip!

    I was skeptical about this at first because I had washed my sheets adding vinegar and baking soda before with no success in whitening. But following your directions exactly the results were amazing!! Thank you for sharing

    Thanks so much for this:)
    I've recently switched to all white bedding and never thought on how tedious it is to keep everything looking fresh&stark white.
    I already use Nellie's All Natural Laundry Soda&Dreft because I have sensitive skin so I don't think Baking Soda&Vinegar will be an issue.
    BTW,I believe my grandmother used to do this,I just never paid attention:)

    Good video, thanks for the tips! I'm getting ready to do a load of whites using your method. Just FYI, dryer sheets *are* expensive, yes -- *and* they are also laden with noxious chemicals. I throw in a couple of pieces of aluminum foil, shapes into balls, and that works great in the dryer. I also make my own laundry detergent that is unscented/non-toxic/contains no dyes. My reasoning is that everything ends up going back into our water supply/oceans and the pollution is finally catching up with us.

    I wish I would have been using this for years instead of just discovering it a few months ago. It helps so much! We've tried bleach, but I'm with you on the "wearing out fast" bit. Plus it can be messy and a pain to use. Happy cleaning!

    So I went to the store yesterday to buy the ingredients you mentioned and I tried it. I also added half a lemon bc I'm not really a fan of vinegar smell. This morning when I got the sheets & kitchen towels out of the dryer, they were white! Thank you so much for these tips. I will now wash my whites like this everytime. 😊♥️

    WOW! Thanks so much for the information. I have been trying to find something that would do this for years. Although my husband bathes daily and often twice a day, he's just one of those people who produces a lot of oil. His whole side of the bed gets stained. It kills me that I buy beautiful sheets, only to have them get stained so quickly. I'm gonna go try this right now. Love your videos.

    I use this method of cleaning to wash my sheets and towels every so often. I probably should do it again. I am out of laundry detergent and this would be a good time to use the baking soda and vinegar. I really should try to stock up on white vinegar, baking soda, and apple cider vinegar because I use them all for soooo many things!!!

    Your presentation is the best I've seen so far. Thank you for the info. The only additional things that I add are borax and dishwashing powder. I occasionally use liquid bleach, but I'm very sensitive to strong chemicals, so I have to be careful. It's probably wise to add these things to a liberal amount of water so the chemicals don't react in an adverse (negative) manner. Thank you again.

    Just want to mention: in my experience with also washing dog towels and bedding (a lot of it) If you have used bleach on your items before, then the yellow or grey will Not go. I have now switched to using on full loads 5kg 1 cup soda crystals, 1/2 cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon borax (this is an anti bacterial agent) 1 cup vinegar (the cheapest I can find any colour) and 1 tablespoon detergent (I often just use left over grated bar of soap). I put it in all at once direct into the drum. You can also use it on colour washing it won't fade the colours it will give life to them. I often also add two tennis balls into the load to give the washing a beating which will improve the cleansing action. If you put those same balls into the dryer with only a drop of essential oils on each, then you can do away with the dryer sheets altogether and the washing drys faster and fluffier with a scent you actually like. if you need an antistatic in the tumble dryer add a scrunched up ball of aluminium foil. Ps. Someone mentioned that their washing machine kept waster standing that made everything smell stale - A)check the filters regularly B) the vinegar, baking soda and the borax will stop any kind of smell as it cleans and descales the machine and pipes every time it's used.

    Baking soda and vinager are wonderful cleaning agents when used together. I have also used vinager, bleach and hot water to clean mildewed shower curtains and other milded items (bathroom ceilings, attics, towels...etc). Baking soda and vinager paste also works great on kitchen sinks (porcelain and stainless) as well as tubs. And my trick for pet stains (urine, blood, snot, and feces)...peroxide! Test spot first to make sure it won't ruin carpet color or furniture. Clean the main mess up first, then sprinkle the spot with 3% peroxide (what you buy at the drug store) ...the spot will bubble up as the peroxide reacts...then blot with a clean rag or towel...repeat until spot is gone. This will also neutralize the odor.

    • @abb0tt
      @abb0tt 8 лет назад +5

      +Tara L FYI warning: vinegar + bleach = TOXIC chlorine gas (yes, household products when mixed together can kill you), same goes for bleach + ammonia. Try googling it.

    • @taral969
      @taral969 8 лет назад +1

      +Rob Abbott- Well aware Rob, but thanks. Yes, you have to be careful when mixing and use in well ventilated area.

    • @guscraig
      @guscraig 6 лет назад

      Tara.
      Just read your post. Sounds good.
      EXCEPT. !!!!!
      VINEGAR + BLEACH = POISON
      you must NEVER combine the two
      vinegar added to bleach causes the bleach to releases toxic chlorine and chloramine vapors. It can be deadly.
      It's not something that would be obvious since each has a strong odor on their own. Mixed together the odor is not very pleasant but it is not necessarily alarming either. Breathe enough of the combination and it WILL harm you.
      BUT, something interesting is that vinegar is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral, just like bleach is. BUT, bleach has toxic qualities. VINEGAR DOES NOT.
      For cleaning around the house vinegar can replace bleach entirely.

    I came across this video several months ago and now I spot treat the worst stains with Resolve carpet cleaner and soak an hour before using this method.

    Thank you!!!, my white cotton fitted sheets that had yellow/brown stains from my legs/feet are now clean and white! Tried doing this in a plastic tub first but didn't work, guess it needs the agitation from a washing machine. Have tried washing the sheets with nonbleach additives, and even pretreated with spray on stain remover, but could still see the stains, and avoided bleach because it can degrade cotton. But I could only wash two sheets at a time for it to work in a front loader. So next time soaked fitted sheet for 6 hr in OxiClean per directions and then washed as normal, fitted sheet came out perfectly clean and white.

    Vinegar in rinse makes laundry softer than any fabric softener and no chemicals! Baking soda whitens teeth with hydrogen peroxide and they stay cleaner FAR longer, especially when you rinse, floss and rinse again .
    Place hp in ears weekly. Clean tobgue and brush twice daily with hydrogen peroxide. Mouth feels awesome all day.
    Great video.

    Hi Kathryn, I love this tip. I used baking soda and vinegar in my bathroom sinks and toilets. Haven't tried these together in the wash, but vinegar is great as a fabric softener. Also, I highly recommend using Wool dryer balls. No scent, but they are so inexpensive and you can add a few drops of essential oil on them after the clothes and dry. You just air dry them for about 10 minutes and they're amazing. I got my dryer balls on E T S Y. I've used subitofarmstore and pdickson3. You might do a video on using them. Love your family and videos.

I know the volcano thing, but you can pre mix it, let the volcano work, then when reaction if over put it. vingar helps with hard water I beleive. The vinegar smell doesn't stay with the fabric. But, if it bothers you, then use the Extra Rinse cycle. Also, vinegar is a disinfectant and anti-static too. So, if I'm not adding bleach, I add vinegar to my loads.
    I'll tell you a quick story about when I accidentally added bleach to my husbands new clothes. Did I almost freak! I quickly spun out the washer and restarted it. And, because it's a front loader which uses less water, I added more water to help it rinse. Everything was fine when it was done. WHEW!!!! Now you know if it ever happens to you.

    Baking soda and vinegar cleans mucky drains too. Vinegar in the rinse cycle takes out any soap residue left from the clothes and leaves them fresh.

    I cannot thank you enough for this hint. For some unknown reason, my husband's pillowcases always look awful... stained and yellow. I will definitely give this a try as I have tried everything. Beach does the trick but it also caues your sheets to wear out fast. I cannot believe how white your sheets came out.

    I had similar issues with brand new white towels and hard water. Vinegar in rinse cycle got them really clean and much fluffier but not whiter. Used a bluing solution and bam, white. Will try baking soda. Cheaper if it works as well. Thanks for tip.

    I don't understand how ppl are so shocked sheets can yellow after a week when white shirts can get yellow in the arm pits and men often struggle with ring around the collar after ONE DAY👀. Your body sheds dead skin, sweats (and usually heavier at night), it's often slathered in lotions, creams and perfume or cologne, your hair hair has products in it and if you forget or simply do not remove your makeup before bed, ALL OF THAT gets carried into bed with you. If you're not a "before bed" showerer, your bed is basically an oven baking the filth of the day into your sheets. Yellowing while not at all attractive is certainly not a condition of the chronically disgusting, lol😂

    I use a mixture of Borax, dishwasher powder and washing soda (NOT BAKING SODA). This works well for my whites and colors. It also removes from dirt very well from my husbands work clothes. I love it. I use vinegar in every load. I make household cleaner as well with it. It takes the smell out of the doggie bedding too. Sometimes I mist the doggie bedding when I am heading outside with them. It is dry and odorless in no time so it doesn't bother them.

      It should be marked on the dial of your machine for the wash cycle you're using which should be cotton/whites.

    I change my bed sheets every week and wash them at 60'c and use vanish stain remover and also Persil washing powder, and to give them a fresh smell I use Comfort fabric conditioner, and I have really bright sheets every time, I also have a Heat Pump dryer also which makes them even softer

    You can use Borateem. It is very good for removing odors. If your linens are quite gray and dingy, soak them before washing them. There is a whitening product on the market but I found it is very harsh on piled linens as towels. It weakens the fibers.

    Great video like all of yours!
    When the sheets and pillowcases were in the dryer, they still looked yellow.
    Is it the dryer heat that manifests the whiteness from the wash? Or am I missing something?
    Thanks!

    • @iluminameluna
      @iluminameluna 8 лет назад +1

      +Debbie Schultz They looked yellow from the light, they weren't really still yellow. The heat from the dryer wouldn't have affected anything. I've been using this way of washing my clothes for over 3 years now due to allergies and I don't always use a dryer to dry my clothes (fleece and crocheted items) so I know for a fact that it doesn't.

    I am going to try this on my kids' white shirts. They have to wear white dress shirts or polo shirts as their school dress code, and they also yellow over time, and I don't like using bleach, so I will totally try this technique! Thanks for sharing!

  • @mevsm1

    This method did work! The tag on the sheets said "Do Not Use Bleach", so maybe that was why they previously got dingy, I don't know for sure but they look new again. Deo Gratias!
